AZB Room @ DCC

Here is the link from onepocket.org

Can't recall who set it up but the reason it doesn't continue is that it used to take up a room that had two tables in it, making those tables unavailable for tournament play. Space no longer allows this given the field sizes we find today. The 14.1 challenge met a similar fate, as Diamond could no longer allocate the tables. As Bob Jewett has so often noted, the Derby City Classic has outgrown the Horseshoe Hotel.

All that said, the AZB room was great fun and allowed AZB posters to meet each other in a friendly environment.
I will be there and looking out for you guys

Go bring up my thread at onepocket. Took care of it and it’s posted below. 👍🏻

They remodeled and there is even more space than before. The whole pool area is open space.

I took a ton of pictures that I posted on the thread Lou.

Actually I’ll go and link it here.

Steve, I didn't mean to imply it was you who offered those comments.

And honestly, from your pictures, while everything looks nice I'm not seeing enough space for the DCC at its current size. But admittedly it's tough to tell from photos. Perhaps someone else offered those observations.

I also went over after they remodeled it and it was really nice, I think it became the Crowne Plaza, really 1st class.

I know you just went by what someone told you. I quoted you over at OP.

We be straight. 👍🏻

btw I believe it was always an AZB/Onepocket.org collaboration. Room monitors were an issue. Helfert kind of ran the 1P Ghost challenge there at least some years. I remember in an early year a young man figuring out a way to sleep in there lol. That was at the E West, but the room did continue at the Horseshoe at least a couple years. It was a blast! I have lots of photos going back to the first year with Tom Ferry and Jimbo 😳😳

Looks like 2006 was the first year
That’s the late Larry Nevel making a shot out of the far corner pocket and drawing the cue ball all the way back into the same pocket! Tom Ferry looking in at the right and the trick shot guy on the left (Stefano Pelinga)

Who were the movers and shakers?
Logistics?
Did it work, i.e. did everyone have a good experience?
What caused it to disappear?
Anyone like to see it back?
Best of it?
Worst of it?
Comments?

Listening to y'all makes me want to go and do it again, and I wasn't there the first time around. All this and the Derby, too? Don't know if I could have stood it.

I remember going to the EW when it was held there. The fields weren't like they are now but it was a nice place.

Here is what the hotel has to say about its meeting space:

CROWNE PLAZA LOUISVILLE AIRPORT EXPO CTR

Meetings & Events

Our hotel offers nearly 50,000 sq. ft. of event space near Louisville airport, including 24 meeting rooms, an executive boardroom, and an elegant ballroom for up to 1,200 guests. Host your meetings and events effortlessly in our flexible venues.

Maybe someone else has a better idea about floor space needed for pool tables in a tournament setup, but let's guess that you need 25x20 for each table. I think that leaves plenty of room for seating and walking around and such. The raw calculation would be 100 tables. Subtract the meeting rooms that are too small for a few tables.

It looks like it could be a big win on space, but I doubt they can meet the financial considerations.

Tom originally suggested something like a get together and then Williebetmore (Dr Don Wardell), Timberly and myself put it together.

There was a room down one of the hallways at the EW (Executive West) that Greg Sullivan said we could pay for it and he would put a table in it.

The first year worked out real nice and I told Greg there was room for a second table so the next year we had 2 in there.

Don and Timberly back away after a couple of years and when DCC moved to the casino there just wasn’t any space big enough for it. It was in a small room with 2 tables and after the second year it finished. 😢

It never affected the tournament at either venue. It cost me out of my pocket making up the difference on stuff just like Bob Jewett and the straight pool but hey 🤷🏻‍♂️
When we ran low on chalk I took it upon myself to gonif some from the tournament tables. Who knew 😊

I ran the One Pocket Challenge every year it was held with Steve Lomako.

It would be difficult for Greg to get as good a deal as he currently has with the Horseshoe $$$!

There is no space in the Hotel. If there was, the walk is so far from the tournament area you might as well have a tent out in the parking garage with tables.

FYI, there was a certain European Championships back in 2010 or so with a tent w/ AC and some 6 tables within. The hotel just couldn’t accomodate all 15-20 tables required to run the even.

Also, World Series of Poker has been played in a tent outside Rio as well.

When there is a will, there is a way… 🤓
