What'd Shaw say after the Derby?

You’ll lose a considerable number of entries thereby losing any payout gains.

Lou Figueroa
but you would
definitely finish
earlier lol
It was just a thought. Like most that attend we are looking for a much needed improvement that’s all.

Well imo you need to lose some entrees. Raising the price is one sure fire way to do that.

Or fix the TD desk to use all the tables.

Or add 2 days.

Or make 9 ball to 7 again, and put a 2 hr limit on EVERY single match in each discipline. Whoever is ahead at that point wins.

Lots of solutions….

We all know zero will change. I don’t know why we get worked up every year, myself included.

I’m glad I haven’t gone back since 2018. There’s not even food in the place!

I suppose I voted with my wallet too. I didn’t go in a while, this year I only bought 1 day of accustats, and I only watched about 1 hr total of the YouTube streams.

We’ll see what happens when SVB, Shaw and friends don’t show up next year. Good pickings for the second tier pros I guess.

The rumor from FB is that the Derby is going to be extended a day. Into Sunday? Officially, that is.

Here is an interview I did with Greg several years ago talking about buy back vs double elimination and the money for master of the table (starts about 13 minute in.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQCWA9LFhu0
Well, straight from the horse's mouth at about 16:39:

Half the people don't buy back. In other words they take their one shot, have fun and play, and it works.
Because if everybody bought back in this tournament, I couldn't do it. I mean we got too many people
getting in. You know I don't have time and enough tables and a big enough place to run the matches.
So minimally you need either more time, more tables, or a bigger place.

But since he has known that this is an issue for at least 9 years, and done nothing to change it, nothing will probably change.

If the buyback system is done away with or pros drop out, it won't be worth watching or caring about. MoT will be meaningless.

presumably they have a contract with the casino and can't just change location?

I just edited my example in post #56 to use today's correct buy-in cost of $100 rather than the incorrect amount of $60.

I find it hard to believe Diamond is willing to take a hit on its rep by allowing this situation to fester. And MR will feel some presure too since this is a ranking event. I’ve heard Frazier talk enuff to know she is all but certain to push for changes If this event is to remain a ranking one.

This is only the second year I’ve watched some parts of the derby. Not impressed at all. Give me the cool professionalism of MR or top Predator events any day. As a fan, I want to see the best players. I get the Open aspect of some of these tourneys, but there has to be tighter standards.

Another thing: I can’t figure out the money payouts in tourneys like this. So less dedicated fans can’t either. Have to have some clarity on what the players are actually playing for.

I didn’t know until I became a fan again a few years ago that pool has gone thru the same chaos as boxing. Derby is a legacy event that needs to get more with the times. Some old timers won’t like it, but the players will vote with their feet.

It was a ranking event for 2023, but I haven't seen anything that says it was for 2024. I just checked on whether the 2024 WNT rankings chart is up yet, but it isn't. Emily Frazer's presence at the DCC 9-Ball event would seem to say it was, but .............

This is my opinion only, so please take it for what it's worth...a plug nickel. It is bothersome to me to see so many make posts about "matchroom taking over this or that tournament," or "let matchroom handle it".

To hell with that. I enjoy what MR is doing. They have huge aspirations and I hope they are successful. But MR has their own niche. They DO NOT need to be the be all- end all of pro pool. Not every pro event needs to have a damn purple 5 ball.

IMO, the DCC, turning stone, and other tourneys can be great as alternatives to MR. Not just another MR event.

Bottom line is that MR might be the best thing to happen to pool since TCOM, but reality is that its Barry's pet project, and he ain't getting any younger. Whose to say when he is gone, Eddie will have the same desire to pump money into a WNT? Maybe he will, but I would rather let MR show some endurance before coronating them Lords everything pool related.

not often i agree to the letter of a long post. DCC needs to find a way to still be a pro-am and action jamboree type of event without the schedule fuggup. MR could and should accept that one ranking event is different in that regard. it's not that many ranking points anyway, so i doubt it's as big an issue for them as some players and fans make it out to be. as for eddie, who doesn't really like any cue sport, we can only hope.

I don't understand the down side of just dumping the buy back or capping the entries. Otherwise, it's a unique event so leave it as is.

I do know for a fact that Greg Sullivan reads AzBilliards and considers this discussion forum a good source where pool aficionados go. He himself has been known to post from time to time.

There is some good content in this thread, and I know Greg is going to take it to heart and figure out a way to effect a change for the better. When the Derby could no longer be held at the Old Executive West, it was challenging to find a venue that could accommodate something as large as the Derby City Classic. Louisville is not Vegas or Atlantic City and does not have the variety of venues that those places offer. But like its name implies, "Derby" City Classic (DCC), I think Greg wants to keep the DCC in Louisville or at least nearby.

As an aside, Greg Sullivan calls some pro players ahead of time and offers them free room and board and entry fees in hopes they will come and add to the excitement that this event offers to pool enthusiasts like me. He wants the DCC to be a place where like-minded pool folk can enjoy themselves while engaging in games of stake and competition against the best of the best. Seeing Joshua, SVB, Fedor, et al., all under one roof for a week-long pool happening is exciting for many pool peeps.

If ever I was to bend the knee, which I am not wont to doing, it would be to pool peeps like Greg Sullivan. Plus, he's American, and America needs people like Greg Sullivan to keep pool relevant in USA before it become extinct due to the lack of support and dwindling lot of American professional pool players happening today. USA, USA, USA, all the way. Long live Greg Sullivan!

I get it. I see why some don't want MR influencing everything.

I started watching pool thru Matchroom events. Then top Predator events. I quickly got used to the high production standards.

There is room for independently operated events. But damn, they have to raise the standard to keep up with MR and Predator. At least to some extent.

We are talking Diamond, too. Everything they do should be topflight. If they made tables like they produce pool tourneys, no one would buy them!
