What'd Shaw say after the Derby?

Make 9 ball a Pro event with a appropriate entry 350/500? Some will enter as dead monet but not as many as now.

The fact they’ve got tables inside the casino and are streaming gambling shows how strong the tournament is for their revenue. Both entities are washing each others hands so much it’s a wonder they got any skin left 😆 the venue could easily add money to the event and never miss it, not only would that pacify the pros to some extent but would also show some good faith that they could give a shit in the slightest about the participants and attendees and not just about stackin racks like bricks at the end of the day…

Drop Bigfoot? No way! That keeps things interesting in the beginning of tournament and doesn't hinder play much if any. That's a mighty nice pay day for 4/5 sets of pool.

Starting with the GC5 you can get 4.5" corners from the factory. They call it the 'Tournament Edition'.
I searched for this today, and found old 3rd party marketing text of the GC4 Tournament Edition. It looks like it was probably copy/paste from Brunswick, rather than their own authored text. Also, coincidentally, there is one for sale right now in the Brunswick FB group. The GC4 TD table did not have "Tournament Edition" on the side stickers, but it did have the big "Bruswick Est 1845" side stickers from what I can find.

Okay, I did. My question is, what type of shimming does the factory do. To me, shimming means adding facings to tighten the pockets.

In other words, my understanding is, their sub rails and rubber are cut to accommodate the dimensions of the pocket. If you buy 4.5 it has just a 3/16 facing.

What does shimming mean to you?
Sorry, I probably started this confusion. All pool tables have the rubber cushion, and ONE facing about 1/8" thick as standard. It does not matter if its Diamond, Brunswick, or a garbage table.

Up until about 1992 when the first Diamonds came out, the only way to get tighter pockets was to "double shim" or "triple shim" the tables by a mechanic, in the field. The OEM pockets were all 5" at the mouth, including the single facing, including the GC6 to this day in 2024. To get it tighter, they took another "facing" of 1/8" thick, and glue it to the factory facing. That was a "double shimmed table", and came to about 4.75" at the mouth. Those tables were the popular table for serious 9 ball gamblers. If a second "shim" was also glued on, for 3 total, that was a "triple shim", which was about 4.5" at the mouth. This was the table for the one pocket players, and usually right next to the counter of the pool room.

Diamond was the first brand to do away with that layering approach entirely. They made their cushions longer, and with only the single "facing", resulted in 4.5" at the mouth. That's their Pro-Cut pockets. They had that from the start until today. About 10 years ago, Diamond started offered some even tighter, special order pockets, at 4.25" and 4.125". They make those by making the rubber cushion and wood behind it longer, while still have only the single "facing" glued on at the standard about 1/8" thickness.

There is NO Diamond table from the factory that has more than one facing glued to the cushion. There MAY be some in the field, but that would probably be for some bastard table where someone took the 4.5" pro-cut pocket and wanted it tighter, and then added additional shims instead of extending the cushions and the wood behind the cushions.

Fast forward a bit, and Bruswick started offering the Tournament Edition table, Predator has their tight pocket table, Gabriels has their table offered with tight pockets, etc. Those tables all followed the Diamond model of making the cushions longer at the factory, and still keeping a single about 1/8" thick pocket facing. (I'm not 100% sure on this last sentence. Maybe they put thicker single facings instead of longer cushions, but I doubt it...).

They should play it on 2 10' tables IMO, to get it out of the way. The 10' tournament monopolizes half the Derby stream. The stands are usually empty the first couple days. They could fit 2 10's in the arena I bet. Then for the final 3 matches, move the extra table out, and bring in the rest of the bleachers. They could finish it in 2 days this way, 4 rounds in each day.

That was my understanding and I've had a couple tables with multiple shims, not ideal.

My question was to island drive, sounded like he was saying a hall owner decided not to pay diamond to shim then at the factory, that he'd get them done on the first recover. I didn't think diamond shimmed tables so I wondered if I was mistaken about that.
Thanks

All of that is well and good from the pro players perspective but a bridge too far for all the dead money amateurs that just want to compete and who supply the prize monies.

IMO, it's more a matter of format and scheduling. If managed better it should wind up on some sort of reasonable schedule. Right now (well, for the last umpteen years) it seems more a case of: we (Diamond) do not care and were going to fly this puppy straight into the ground at o-dark-thirty the last possible day of play.

For those of us who didn't or couldn't watch, how'd you fare at one hole up there Lou??

I agree but, it's not a good business plan if you maximize profits for quick gains without thinking about the long term. I don't pretend to have an answer, but running the pros off is not a good long term plan.
Has anyone ever thot of perhaps boycotting this event one year, to send a wake up call to fix this mess?? Ala we keep going and paying and packing the rooms, they will put up w all the whining we can dish out every year and laugh all the way to the piggy bank.

Point, Badpenguin.

Aside from the long wait, though, how does the process run? I am looking to get a Diamond in the next year.
First table, pre-covid (2019), 3 months.

Second table, ordered summer of 2023, received by end of November, a little over 4 months. They told me it would be up to a year.

So I have nothing to complain about really.

Late in life I'm going more Ernest Hemingway -- short and sweet:

This is why pool never evolved, no adaptation to current culture.

Fats made the game exciting because he called out matches and competition.

Fats never quoted any writers. I doubt he could read.

It was a ranking event for 2023, but I haven't seen anything that says it was for 2024. I just checked on whether the 2024 WNT rankings chart is up yet, but it isn't. Emily Frazer's presence at the DCC 9-Ball event would seem to say it was, but .............
The 2024 WNT Rankings table is up now, and it confirms that the recent DCC 9-Ball event was still a ranking event, but the Turning Stone event last month was not. A few of the late-2023 events are also included in the 2024 rankings.

I'm with Lou on this one. I don't think Diamond wants to change anything. If they limited the field by 100 players in each division, that's maybe 150 less hotel rooms and hotel kickbacks. From their standpoint, their staff gets a few sleepless nights for a few days. Big deal, they'll get over it. Their staff are mostly all family. The money all stays with them.

Making the experience better for the fans or the players would actually bring them less money, as everything sells out completely now.

Follow the money is always a good first step.

I know this sounds harsh, but it's the only thing that makes any sense to me. The other alternative is incompetence.
1 Timothy 6
3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; 4 he is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, 5 perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. 9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Just an FYI

When DCC was at the Executive West, Greg Sullivan bought every room in the Hotel ahead of time at a negotiated rate and charged what he wanted during the tournament for the 600 rooms. If you made just $10 per room per night would you like it?

They made a lot of money on the rooms.

They make a lot of money on the DCC. They should, who wouldn’t want to?

Played the first round, lost, ate at the steak house, drank *a lot* of beer at the bar, left the next day.

Did you blow it, or were you beaten?? I'm curious as to who had the misfortune of drawing your name first round?? Must have been a killer.
