Given things that have been discussed recently I figured it is worth talking about regarding how rules are viewed in golf vs pool.
Playing golf, you and anyone else are expected to know all of the rules and adhere to them every time you step on the course. In some places you have to take a rules test to even be allowed to play. Courses may have local rules which are in addition to the rules of golf. They are normally printed on scorecards. You are expected to call penalties on yourself. If someone in your group, or even an observer, sees a rule is broken, they tell you and you incur the penalty. There is no argument or name calling over it. You accept the penalty and move on. A common scenario is on the putting green. My ball marker interferes with the line of your putt, so you ask me to move it. I forget to move it back and then putt. Player in my group asks if I moved it back. I say no and get a penalty for putting from the incorrect spot. It is not my opponent's fault that I forgot to move it back.
Playing pool, I wonder how many players even know all of the rules. It seems most players just figure them out as they gain experience. Maybe they play a league and learn those rules and believe that is the rules everyone else uses. It would be nice if tournaments had some local rules for things outside of the norm.
It seems that following the rules in pool is a case by case basis for the majority instead of strictly by what they are. Player reactions are also extremely different than what they are in golf based on comments here and on Facebook. There are lots of players who will try to get away with whatever they can which is unfortunate. This includes sharking as well which would never be permitted on a golf course.
I am wondering why this is so? Because rules are strictly adhered to in the beginning when playing golf and pool just doesn't have that same approach?
