Golf vs pool

Given things that have been discussed recently I figured it is worth talking about regarding how rules are viewed in golf vs pool.

Playing golf, you and anyone else are expected to know all of the rules and adhere to them every time you step on the course. In some places you have to take a rules test to even be allowed to play. Courses may have local rules which are in addition to the rules of golf. They are normally printed on scorecards. You are expected to call penalties on yourself. If someone in your group, or even an observer, sees a rule is broken, they tell you and you incur the penalty. There is no argument or name calling over it. You accept the penalty and move on. A common scenario is on the putting green. My ball marker interferes with the line of your putt, so you ask me to move it. I forget to move it back and then putt. Player in my group asks if I moved it back. I say no and get a penalty for putting from the incorrect spot. It is not my opponent's fault that I forgot to move it back.

Playing pool, I wonder how many players even know all of the rules. It seems most players just figure them out as they gain experience. Maybe they play a league and learn those rules and believe that is the rules everyone else uses. It would be nice if tournaments had some local rules for things outside of the norm.

It seems that following the rules in pool is a case by case basis for the majority instead of strictly by what they are. Player reactions are also extremely different than what they are in golf based on comments here and on Facebook. There are lots of players who will try to get away with whatever they can which is unfortunate. This includes sharking as well which would never be permitted on a golf course.

I am wondering why this is so? Because rules are strictly adhered to in the beginning when playing golf and pool just doesn't have that same approach?

what rules? Lol we don’t have a governing body that everyone follows. Rules change From tournament to tournament. bar to bar. League to league. I get apa players screaming why doesn’t someone know the rules on fb all the time. If all you play is apa I get it but god damn there is a lot of leagues and a lot of rules.
One 8 on the break is a win. one is gets spotted and someone. One you have the choice of spotting it or your opponent breaking again. etc, etc. etc.

simply put the golf has that one governing body that everyone from the casual player to the pro respects all across the world and we don’t.

All valid points but it doesn’t address the fact that there are still rules, even if they vary. Golfers call fouls on themselves while an insane number of pool players just ignore the rules they don’t personally agree with and then throw a fit when the rules are enforced. Ive never seen anything crazier than berating a person for following the WRITTEN rules of a games, yet it happens over and over.

Ummmmmmmm.....(I must refer you to click on the UAS link below)......

Lets see.......
  • The all time classic "foot wedge"
  • The also classic (never a lost ball) because you have one in your pocket and even though you snap hooked it 150 yards out of bounds over a house....you miraculously found it on the ruff.....(with a perfect lie to boot)
  • The perfect lie guy on virtually every shot....courtesy of the ball bump with the club before the shot.
  • The magic marker that somehow makes your ball move sometimes closer and/or to a more optimal putting line with less break.
  • Of course you can never leave out the 4 man scramble "pencil whip".....(never tell another team your teams score mid round)
  • How about the guy that helps you find your ball in the ruff and it somehow got stepped on by sasquatch and you can clearly see the foot print .... "I swear I thought I saw something in the tree line"....That is "IF" they tell you they found it.
  • Then you got the guy that takes practice swings directly behind his ball removing enough grass to make a hey bundle.
  • The sand man.....backswing so powerful that sand gets sucked up and flies backwards on his back swing

These are all off the top of my head....I am quite positive there are many more.....Lots of guys in the "cheaters club" in Golf......Funny thing is....I have seen really good players that still cheat.

I play a lot of golf and a lot of pool. I see more ignoring of the rules in golf than pool.
A lot of the golf is in a men's association that supposedly plays by the rules of golf so you'd think they'd adhere to rules. Funny thing is, the people in charge think people will quit if it gets too serious.

Alcohol....night time behavior in this ecosystem.

Yes and no. Generally speaking you are right. There are tons of examples of players calling penalties on themselves in golf even in critical situations etc…. However, you overestimate rules knowledge and adherence. There are also examples of alleged issues even at high levels. These don’t get discussed as much. I pay some attention to golf and didn’t know about some for many years. I’m sure there are others that have never been discussed publicly.

I also don’t run in the gambling circles in golf. There are reasons why gamblers will modify the rules to avoid disputes. Some play super old rules. No relief anywhere for any reason. Others play more like a scramble to where you can move it so nobody has to watch as close or worry. At least from accounts I have heard or read. Guys playing for large sums of their own don’t call the USGA or R&A for advice.

One similarity is that both games are played by humans. This brings all the human factors, faults, and weaknesses to the table.

This is why the fact that Matchroom maintained the exact same set of rules in its majors for the entire year of 2023 is a big deal. As others have noted, standardization of the rules is not yet a reality in our sport outside of Matchroom, which, to be fair, took a while to get there.

10ball has made a joke of the rules. Sometimes ten on the break counts, sometimes you can make the ten early and it counts, sometimes it is winner breaks and sometimes it is alternate break. The guys running 10ball are still making up their minds and change rules constantly. Yet, outside of Matchroom, 9ball is just as silly. The break rule changes from event to event, the jump cue is allowed in some events but not others, the break box is some events but not others.

Yes, many rules are the same at every event, but a standard set of rules is needed in pool to be used at all events, pro and even amateur, and until we get that, players will find it challenging to know all the rules at every event.

Yes, rules should evolve. I like the way baseball does it. Every December, the Major League Baseball rules committee meets and decides what changes are coming for the next season, which begins approximately April 1. Teams are advised of the upcoming changes and have months to prepare for their application, and that's fair to all.

The original post hits the nail on the head. The players don't know all the rules, but as a group, the event producers have made it harder and harder for them by modifying the rules whenever they please.

Damn! You know ALL of the "bend the rules" rules. Bettors BEWARE! :ROFLMAO::love:😜
How about the guy who is always calling out "MULLIGAN"!

Golfers can be 50 yards away from their opponent. They aren’t the same. Your comparisons is off base And if you think golfers don’t cheat you’ve never been to better ball tournaments where guys come in at 20 under par 😂

Well........Some of those Mulligan guys would lose a chunk o change (if you get my drift) For those guys....we would kind of tend to look the other way.....We did have a "Cheaters Club".....If you were caught cheating and put in the club..... you pretty much killed any action from pretty much everyone I knew that gambled........There was many a "club pro" skins game in the afternoons pretty much every week day....Single digit handicap players could get in by invite.....Get put in the cheaters club.....no more invites for you.

Of course if you are good enough....Fans will cheat for you and move mountains.....(Or at least very large boulders directly in your way)

You asked what rules. I pointed out every tournament and league has rules. Every one of them
