FargoRate Question

For the FargoRate app, it is offered as free, and as paid $12 (about) per year. The paid version shows you all of your match history. The free version does not. To me, it was worth it to see my match history, and to support the efforts by Mike and his team.

In my experience, when a location starts using Fargorate, some players will be very against it, while some players will be very for it. I think the ones for it will be greater, and there will even be players traveling from further away than normal to participate in tournaments that use it.
Can you pay later to retrieve the history?
Not sure I will be able to get that many games initially.
I am going to ask my friend who organizes some tournaments a little later, and think about how I can get more games in

Yes. Whenever you pay it will show your entire fargo games history. Then when the subscription runs out, it will only show your rating and robustness. You can also pay by the month for about 2 USD to see if its worth it for you.

I kept mine free until I started getting a lot of fargo games and wanted to remember who I played.

I think the easiest way to get games in for a tournament setting is to have the TD use the digitalpool.com brackets. They are free, and there is a button to report to fargorate. You could even become the TD, make your own account there, and host a tournament with 10 of your poolroom buddies. Then you would all get ratings.

I played three races to 25 (10ball) over the weekend with a friend who is visiting Shanghai for a Chinese-8 tournament in Qinhuangdao (he’s rated around 700) we used the Salotto APP.

The Salotto APP is not working very well here in China (I need to use VPN to get it to load), so the match cannot be left open when on-going or it glitches out. We recorded the results and entered them after over a couple of beers (even when trying to do this, one of these glitched out and is listed as ‘expired’).

Initially, these showed as public games on FargoRate APP, but then dissappeared. Even when trying ‘premium’, they still do not appear? These still show on Salotto (at the times entered), and we played for some money with witnesses.

I asked a few Chinese friends to also download Fargo and Salotto, and I’ve been badgering my friend who organises most tournaments here to use Fargo in tournament play (he just downlaoded to try himself along with Salotto)... But I feel like I have wasted his time if it doesn’t really work properly here?

Why have these matches dissappeared? Is there any point in playing other people if the matches cannot be entered effectively here? Is there a way to get trusted friends to verify in such circumstances as the APP is not correctly loading/working?

If I didn’t win a fair bit in the games on the weekend, I’d call it a waste of time and money...

Give it 2-3 days is my advice. Sometimes the Fargo app lags. But it's weird that it shows in the Fargo app initially and now is not.

The VPN, yes, China makes everything difficult with regard to that. I went there several times for work and we always had issues.

Thanks for the reply, I will wait (not much else I can do lol)

I sent an email to the support that details the above. It all went a bit glitchy, and did take me a few times to enter the info (even when we were sitting after with beer in hand). Initially, It showed in the matches section, but the rating was unaffected at that time (maybe it was to show they are processing? I don't know). Left it a day and checked it again, and they are still gone for now, rating unchanged. They do still show in Salotto APP.

VPN is a bit of a nuisance sometimes. Things are blocked for various reasons; whether financial a lá Google, FB, Insta, or general censoring of unwanted news sources (won't get into the detailed thoughts or comparisons to other countries 🤣)... Not sure why Salotto/FR are like this (unless they are hosted by a platform/engine that is in the 'no no' bracket regarding the 'great firewall')

I'm surprised you can even connect to these forums. I know someone in China who can't. Do you get here through a VPN? Are VPNs legal?

I can connect to the forum without VPN. VPN is technically illegal (fineable offense) unless using sanctioned/authorized or business connection. Many people use VPN.

Got an email from Bryan @ FR and he encouraged me to contact Salotto support, who are yet to reply. The matches did show on FR public matches section initially, and now they don't... They still show on Salotto... Super annoying. I wanted to get a few decent players here to sign up to both, and was badgering the TD of my local to start using FR. But what's the point if it's mad glitchy or unreliable here?

Ok, I will see if I can encourage a few friends to download Salotto. I hope it makes one for me, less effort the better.
Thanks for your explanation on how that works :) It only does races to 10? (Here is usually 7 for fun, or 15 for $$$)
Wish it was cheaper than 3$ a go, as 600$ to get 200 games in (200 is the requirement for a solid rating right?)
Again, sorry if these questions are dumb

I think part of the reason they charge the fee is to try to keep cheating the rating down a bit. If you need to pay to use it, it is not quite as simple to just add a bunch of fake or made up scores to the system.

I want to establish a Fargo rating, but I am playing far away from any Fargo related activities. There are players here who do have a Fargo rating, but no one really gives a flying F about it since covid... I did hear one of the Tournaments here is going to try and bring Fargo to the table, but not sure how they're going with that as post-CNY, and still waiting for the years tournament schedule.

I regularly play someone rated mid-600s (which he established when living in the US), who I beat very consistently (I'd say 8 out of 10 times I am finishing on top).
I have also beaten a couple of established 700+ players, and a 788 (I wrote previously here about this, these players were previously competing on the pro-circuit). There are some players I would say are playing at around that speed (by my eye) here, who play in tournaments domestically that I often play with, but these players have no interest in Fargo. I would say these players are currently considerably better than me, but I am competitive with them, and I would like to gauge my Fargo and work to being regularly more competitive with these guys.

I saw Salotto mentioned in another thread, how could I use that to establish a rating? Do I need to sign up to the Fargo app? Really a little clueless how it works. Help appreciated :)
Do you beat him 8 out of 10 games? Or 8 out of 10 races? Just curious.

People's idea of frequencies is often 'off' lol. But I can answer for him here without a doubt, he is saying races not racks, as Joshua Filler wouldn't win 8/10 games against a 650.

Would be nice to be a decent favorite against a legit 650. That is a high level indeed. But 80% vs one....skewed perception imo....or we'll be seeing this AZBer at the world championships soon.

I think you're right. But playing Devil's advocate here, isn't a 200 point Fargo gap supposedly a 4-1 win rate? So Josh (850) vs random (650) should win around 8-2.

If you and your friends play enough you might want to consider starting your own "league". Some sort of weekly round robin, going this route you might be able to utilize the FR League Management System and directly enter your information into the FR website. If you did this, you could also show your friend who runs the tournaments how it works?

Just a thought.

I don't mind paying a fee at all to be honest. I want to obtain and track a rating. I know that my friend who organizes tournaments here in Shanghai is keen to use something other than his own collected data to provide more opportunities for tournaments (handicapped events etc). He is hosting tournaments that have a pretty big payout, and his current method based on his own data tracking is sometimes unreliable.

I've basically paid for 75 racks with a friend, that have not been added to FargoRate, even though I have selected the apply to FargoRate option. I emailed FargoRate support (because like I said, they did show up initially on there and now they don't - Bryan from their support told me to email Salotto support who I haven't heard from...). they still show in Salotto APP... I paid a monthly fee on FargoRate to see if they were logged and processing or something... they aren't there...

I was going to play some sets to 7 with some Shanghainese friends yesterday, and they said what's the point in paying a fee if it doesn't show in the app... The foreign friend who I played for the first 75 racks is only here for another couple of weeks, and is busy with other things, and the few friends who I got to also download the app won't use it because it ate my money and doesn't work properly... Fucking annoying because I beat one 7-1, and the other 7-2 last night.

So far, I've basically paid 20$ or so to waste my time and look like an idiot to my Chinese friends who I have been badgering to get involved with FargoRate...

Against my friend rated around 700. We played 3 sets of 25 over a couple of days. 75 racks total (25-18 / 25-19 / 25-19 = 75-57). The dollars in my pocket are the only thing that have me not spitting about my time wasted fumbling around with stupid APPS.

I think they just aren't updating Fargo currently while this big Vegas tournament is going on
Benefit of the doubt has been given on my end for sure. But I am trying to encourage more friends to use it so I can continue to build a rating. No one wants to use something when they can't see if it works. 'Face' matters in this culture, so I am actually a little bit bothered by the fact that I look stupid or unreliable to these people. 'Face' is worth more than a few $$$

For what it's worth, from Fargo's perspective, that's about a 57% win percentage...

I beat him more often than not, around 8 out of 10 games. Speaking generally (8, 9 or 10 ball). His rating is actually 627. I played him last night, but he wouldn't use Salotto based on the fact It didn't enter my previous matches...
