Burnishing the tip

I get it makes the edge dark black, but I don't see how this would keep leather from fuzzying..?
I'm wondering if you don't need a tip replacement? I've had Triangles that are just inherently fuzzy like that and there's not much you can do about it. Get a good tip and burnish it with leather/spit and it should stay smooth on the sides for a long time.

The point is: I have no problem getting it very shiny with only spit or water. But it tends to fluff up rather quickly. I love to have the burnished tip look, how can I get it to stay like this longer. (Kamui clear black)
I do the spit and leather , then use a black magic marker on it .

Any products you use for burnishing the sides of the layered tip and keeping it that way a "long time" ? I have a "lathe".

Tiger tip burnisher - It does nothing more than spit to me
Gum trag - Doesn't seem to last much
Tokonole - never tried but it's a well know burnisher with natural waxes in it
Renaissance wax?
Car wax?
Nail polish?

EDIT. THE QUESTION IS : WHAT WILL MAKE THE BURNISHING LAST LONGER?
A little oil from the side of my nose or behind the ear , no wait, that's for my fishing pole.

Superstition would be using only a 100 dollar

don't polish the cloth.
I use the cloth on the top edge of the rail over the rubber. Warming the leather and getting it to shrink and harden. It Doesn't hurt the rail. I did however have one of the ladies at the senior center protest. She thought it was hurting the table. 🤷‍♂️ I have been doing it on my table for years and no discernable wear to the top of the rail. That part of the cloth doesn't see much traffic. I just made sure that lady wasn't around when I did it thereafter.

Funny you mention that, as I'll occasionally do that too, buff the edge of the tip against the rail cloth. I think it worked better back in the days of napped wool cloth such as Brunsco, and not quite as good with today's more popular Simonis, Championship, etc.

So many ways to burnish a tip, I can't figure out why anyone would choose to use the pool table, whether it does damage or not.
It's handy quick and harmless. Standing at the table just dampen the perimeter of the tip and burnish it. Don't need to dig into the vault for money nor trapse to the bathroom for a paper towel. Of course I could dig into my pouch and use the back side of the sandpaper I always have there. Just quick and easy is my excuse. 🤷‍♂️ plus no harm no foul. I did have an establishment owner come running one time. It had been reported to him. He couldn't tell which of the 6 rails I had defiled. 🤷‍♂️ I promised not to do it again though. 🤷‍♂️

I use that method with a $20 bill. Superstition?
Same here...or any bill, for that matter. Been doing it that way for over 30 years with all types of tips. I wet the edge of the tip, wrap it in a bill and roll it on my thigh while pinching the sides of the tip. Doesn't take long at all.

An aussie fiver (or one of the new UK ones, or anywhere else with plastic money)

I thought layered tips weren’t supposed to mushroom. Shouldn’t the sides stay good too? I have good LePros on all my player cues finally. There is at least 50-60 hours on one with marker on the outside. It’s beginning to wear off and could use a refresh.

The other two aren’t even burnished and 1 is getting close to 100hrs on it. Pretty sure there is some type of glue on the outside of that particular one. I’ve learned sandpaper towards the middle works best to keep the sides nice. Willard’s type shapers tend to work from the inside out. Unless you use it towards the center. But layered tips and going towards the middle probably wouldn’t be the best idea. Sometimes a porcupiner can work wonders. Especially since layered aren’t supposed to lose their shape as easily. Maybe they just need a little fluff put back in them instead of a shaper. That will have zero effect on the sides.

Or maybe just like a lepro or elkmaster or any regular tip. You get a bad one occasionally. Just because they are $20 doesn’t mean they are better. There are $1000 appliances that crap out more than the equivalent one that’s $600. Maybe not as many at $1000 but you don’t always get a good one. Not all leather is the same. Different cows/pigs different leather.
