Humidity

Anybody got any brilliant ideas on how to deal with the humidity in my basement? Yes, I have a dehumidifier and I run it alot. I am going to run it most of the day tomorrow. When I pick up my cues the linen wraps are damp. The table also seems to play slow.

We've had a lot of rain here in SW Indiana this spring and are forecast for more tonight and Friday. Perhaps even get drenched by heavy rains. That's all we need, another deluge.

Anybody got any ideas here?

Interesting this topic has come up as it is currently 'rainy season' (well just entering it) here, and I was also thinking about this a lot. The last few days have been horrible. Rails completely unreliable, with balls bouncing off on contact, or the spin being sucked out of balls on contact. Like the balls being pushed through treacle with every shot, bad contact between balls. You name it, it's happening. Don't often complain about issues, just look for work arounds. But this has been horrible. Made me want to lay off for a week or two. Hopefully the rooms air con/humidifier system kicks into gear and settles the conditions a bit.

Curious if there are any conscious efforts or alterations to the way people play in order to deal with humidity?

We deploy several 'Damp Rid' bags around the basement and dump them almost weekly. Surprising how much water accumulates. Not sure that they are more effective than a dehumidifier, but they work 24/7.

Damp Rid bags?

Can you elaborate? What are they, where do you get them, etc, etc.

Heated slate is the way to go….carombole showed the way….the UK finally fell in line….faster cloth and dryness is why it’s raining centuries.
I suspect that a simple light bulb under the table would eventually dry the everything……leave it on 24/7.

Great idea. And not an LED😉

Is the dehumidifier adequate for the size basement. Sometimes we buy a unit from Home Depot or Best Buy...it is too small for the room. What are the specs on the dehumidifier...consider adding another. My record collection jackets got damaged badly from not running a dehumidifier.

Yes, should be. Plus the dehumidifier is only about 6-7 feet from the Gold Crown.

Funny, over the last 12+ years I don't recall it ever being that humid down in the basement. I did have water in the basement back in 2022 and had to finally have a sump pump installed back in the corner.

I second the carom heater idea. When Earl played Shane in Ohio he had 2 or 3 space heaters under the table. I was there in person and saw them.

You can probably DIY looking at carom designs. I think they have some sort of box to "hold the heat in", and heating elements inside the box.

Treacle is from Middle English (Old French) - Molasses from modern French. Who'd have thunk it? Usually the US use Italian words for many culinary terms that were stolen from the French in British English.
What a random rabbit hole I just wandered down.

Either way, humidity is one of the quickest ways to remove satisfaction from the game.
