Van Boening vs. Gorst 10-Ball Race to 120, Rematch June 2025 -- General Comments Thread

By the way, 41 is not old in our sport. The legends of the game have always produced majors at SVBs age or older. Here are some examples:

Nick Varner won the US Open 9ball at 42
Jose Parica was Billiards Digest Player of the Year at 48
Joe Balsis won the All-Japan at 48
Efren Reyes won the All-Japan at 49
Buddy Hall won the US Open 9ball at 53
Very true, but I assume the younger generation players back then were less skilled than nowadays. With modern era competition performing at top level and such age has become much much harder. So kudos to Souquet who is still stubborn and tries to walk along with younger aspiring monster competitors.

I wouldn't be so sure.

While I must concede that I have not watched any of it, this match is on a pace to be 120-75, and if that's the final score, would you, as SVB's backer, sign up for another round of this? If this merciless massacre continues to materialize, I think Fedor's logical next step would be to take a big step up in class and try his hand vs Josh Filler.

It would be nice to see SVB finish strong here.
A big step up lol Filler wouldn’t play Shane 10 ball in the past

If SVB loses, I feel certain he and his team will fire back, regardless of the score. It may take a while to negotiate the few changes, to the game, that they perceive will benefit them but backers don’t gamble to break even.

You are, of course, entitled to your opinion, but if you ask Fedor or his backer who is a tougher guy to beat, he'd say Josh, and Fedor will view it as a much tougher assignment to match up with Josh. Hence, a big step up in class.

Yes, but as so many others on AZB have noted, he is playing as well as he ever has. The standard has risen, plain and simple, and there are two guys in the game today offering a level of play that few of us would have even believed possible just ten years ago. Winning any event in which both of them appear is awfully difficult.

Every generation of players has raised the play of the one that came before them, and that's the main reason that it gets tougher and tougher to win majors for a veteran. That said, the all-time greats have always found a way, and my guess is that SVB will, too. Don't sleep on him.

Shane has definitely not played as well as he ever has in this one.

Hasn't ever gotten the break figured out, has left numerous opportunities on the table when Fedor makes mistakes, often overruning/coming up short on shape and safeties, etc.

Hell, he almost got 3 fouled after scratching ball in hand.

He played relatively well most of yesterday, but day 1 was, largely, some of the worst pool I've seen Shane play... Fedor has been a robot for a lot of it, which is why the score is what it is....and when Fedor has faulted, Shane hasn't been able to capitalize.

I agree he is a step up , a big one that remains to be seen , I highly doubt him or his backers are scared to play

Thanks for that. For those like me who aren't tuning in, our comments are a bit speculative.

Yes, he is obviously not in his top form here, and it is probably too late for a comeback in this spot, but I'd like to see Shane finish strong, even if it means just playing Fedor to a 40-40 tie in the final session.

After losing last year's US Open to Fedor, I'm beginning to think that he has SVB's number. Unless SVB's performance suddenly dramatically improves tonight like it did last time, almost as if something is enhancing his performance, I think it might be time for him to bow out gracefully and go fishing.

He's not a favorite against Fedor or Josh and he should retire? Wtf are you smoking? He's #5 FR and I still haven't seen this ameer guy, so most likely #4 FR in the WORLD, and you think he should retire?

This may be the dumbest take I've EVER read 🤦‍♂️

And then to imply he's on drugs, clearly you're the one smoking or taking something

I'm with you here. Shane is still super-elite, and the presence of two otherworldly players changes nothing. I strongly feel he has another major in him in the near future. I've never been inclined to read too much into these long races, which test a lot of things over and above pool playing skills.

What also occurs.... your opponent is getting more shots, they become more relaxed and play better.
