Surprise, surprise!

JB wouldn't make much, if any, difference. All he plays these days is UltimatePool barbox stuff. You're are right on us getting smoked, don't see ANY other outcome. Hope i'm wrong but i'm a realist not a dreamer.
Justin came by a few weeks ago and played some. While he looked good, not mosconi level, imo. Might have been the environment we were in.
I'm sure he would tighten up over there.
Gotta give him that.

I'm hoping our captain is a leader, and with more experience than most his peers.
USA team needs someone with Experience, like Varner as the captain....
Like Busty, all the boys listened to HIM when difficult situation arose.... I'm hoping our team will have one captain, not a team of captains.
The World team was nothing but Distractions and poor focus

I’m good with picking Billy. He’s a justifiable choice. Lotta people treating it like a nepotism pick but he has merits if you look at the details. More people are just irked that the whole player captain scenario even allows for the optics of a nepotism pick. And I think that’s a fair criticism.

I don’t like the player captain situation. I don’t like free passes onto the team. Granted Sky skipped some events to get married and I appreciate the work-life balance of that. But I think the free pass also doesn’t incentivize him to continue to hone his skills through the gauntlet of competing on the road and living that grueling elite pool player lifestyle.

While it’s laughable to think Shaw wouldn’t have been a captains pick regardless, as #10 on the European WNT Rankings it won’t be long before we start saying he’s getting an unfair free pass too based on his recent performances.

I honestly wouldn’t mind seeing it switch to a pure “top 5 on rankings” approach. But as long as they have wildcards, there’s a strong meritorious argument that could be made for Billy being picked.

Meh. I would love to see my man Oscar out there again. Doesn’t play as full time as Billy but he’s in big action when he does play and he’s very good in the pressure cooker. Also he’s just about the classiest guy in the pool world. The sad truth is the US just can’t field 5 world class players because we don’t have them. I’ll be rooting hard for USA but I expect nothing less than us getting barbecued

I think we have to remember what’s needed for a win, and it’s not necessarily who is picked for the 5th man slot. If we had won these matches (which should have been feasible) we’d be up 9-5 instead of down 9-5. The fate of the cup doesn’t rest in Billy’s hands

Definitely not a surprise given who his best buddy is. But all things considered, he's not all that much different from any of the other options. Perusing the top-100 USA Fargo list: I like Oscar, but can anyone say Oscar would perform better? Bergman just likes to crush shortstops locally. Dechaine is out of practice. Meglino has looked strong in the few times I've seen him, but he doesn't have much big-tourney experience. Chohan is having health problems. I can't remember the last time I've seen Josh Roberts play. Pinegar is a powder keg. And most of those guys are not on tour anyways.

It was Thorpe or Oscar, and one of them is the captain's best buddy, and it's a coin-flip regardless. Go USA! Try to make the final score at least somewhat respectable!

And it’s funny between Billy and Oscar given Oscar didn’t play much of anything all year and has an abysmal MC record. I don’t think Oscar has ever won a singles match and two out of his three doubles wins were in 2009. His only real claim to the spot was being snubbed last year.

If they were playing a big money nine ball match who are you taking? I wouldn’t be betting on a blowout but I would be on Oscar. I think it would be a good match to make actually.

This could also be framed as a reason to replace the entire team with younger more motivated players.
