Playing Pool after 50?

It's funny I move around the table like a spring chicken still considering the health issues I've gone thru. It's been a killer waiting 5-6 hours to play the first match and my body wants to have a nap.

Having said that, I actually pulled a hamstring last year playing pool. I had a straight, locked right leg standing tall to reach and bridge over a ball in the middle of the table.

They heard it pop 2 tables over...

Good grief, you're getting old when you pull a hammy at the pool table! 😂

My all time pool hero was Mickey McGuire, a local bookie who won our weekly 9 ball tournament on his 80th birthday, beating a top Washington area player (Freddy Boggs) in a hill-hill final. I was "only" 49 at the time, but from that point on, my ambition was to duplicate Mickey's feat, and on my 80th in 2024 I took my wife with me to the tournament to take pictures. She was there when I won it on my 51st birthday, and she's often my good luck charm.

Alas, I went 4 and out. But the next week I won it, and I've won it several times since then. The beauty of pool is that as long as you can see and maintain your basic hand-eye coordination, always concentrating on your stroke fundamentals, there's really no limit as to how long you can play. AFAIC it's all in your head.
Freddy Boggs was one helluva player

I'm a spring chicken to some here at 65 years young , while I returned to the game a few short years ago I think back to when Frank McGowan and I would play pool he'd take off his glasses to give me a chance ha ha !

He said he learned to shoot at the shadows on the ball and once you learned that he'd say you're going to do good !
No I never did win a game but it was very humbling to watch and try to learn from Frank working his way through a rack of balls , effortlessly at times .

Just writing this out makes me miss playing him a game on a 9' table !

I must say that I play better now inspite of being medieval age. although my endurance and consistency can use some improvement. for someone who has now health issues, I have to carry with me some candies or food/drinks (not alcoholic beverage) while I'm playing pool for 3-4 hours.

I am 55 love the game, play every day at home and go to the local room 2-3 times a week. The guys I regularly play 1hole with are all over 65 and the two I play the most are 75 & 87. Sometimes I play pretty even sometimes they torture me.

I will be 69 the 26'th of this month and started playing pool again about a year ago after almost 20 years off.
I have had back and hernia surgeries, shoulders are shot and eyes aren't as good as they once were....
But a friend that is 76 and I managed to run through the losers bracket after losing our first match last Saturday in a last pocket tournament and we were guaranteed 2'nd place. As it was getting late and the weather was getting bad the decision was made to combine 1'st and 2'nd place prizes and split it equally between the 2 remaining teams so we tied for 1'st. But that was ok since I had to drive 80 miles to get back home when it was freezing rain and snow mix.

early happy birthday......🍰🍰

I played Jimmy Moore when he was in his 80s, he kicked my ass.

Most athletes are in their prime from about 25 to 30, I would add 10-20 years for pool players. But the average player could be competitive into their sixties.
I also had my butt handed to me by Jimmy Moore , I didn't mind one bit racking the balls for him just to have the privilege to play a few racks of pool with him .
Not long afterwards I heard about a " road player " who Jimmy was practicing with that told him he played pretty good pool for a old man !
Well they changed the game to a race to 11 for $ 1.000.00 winner break , the road player racked 11 racks straight when he tried to settle his debt Jimmy told him to keep his money so he could get some pool lessons !

So yes I feel there's hope for all of us as we age gracefully or try to anyway even with a health issue from time to time !

No, I can’t…..I cannot recall any pool player losing a limb nor eaten alive because he had a bad day playing pool.
If you want to say life doesn’t end because we get older, fine. But there’s no comparison of swimming with sharks
and playing pool for even high stakes gambling. Pool is pretty risk free and you can’t drown playing pool either.

Besides, you could still have the best day of your life surfing and wind up becoming a one armed pool player or one
legged. If you became one- legged after feeding a shark, you’ll be able to keep one foot on the floor playing pool.

I’m 54 and feel like I’m playing the best pool of my life mentally and physically. The only adjustment I had to make is in my 40s my eyes that were good enough to play pool without glasses ( I would take them off when playing ) suddenly said nope! We’re out 😂 so I had to adjust to wearing glasses. The best thing I did was get a diamond with 4.25 inch pockets at home. I had to completely rebuild my fundamentals because they had gotten sloppy through the years but I came out the other side a better player.
Same, my eyesight had started to deteriorate, but I played with glasses for a short time but then got a killer deal on lazik for both eyes.
