Reed Pierce confirmed he’ll be playing in the Mississippi 9-Ball Open this weekend.

I ran into Reed a couple of months ago at a local pool hall, and he was putting some time in on the table. He mentioned it had been several years since he’d really played, so I asked what brought him back.

He said he recently crossed paths with Johnny Archer, and they got to talking about the current crop of players coming up in the area. Reed’s take? He thinks they’re “fair at best.” That conversation lit a bit of a fire under him, and he decided it was time to get back in stroke and remind folks what top-level play looks like.

Sounds like he’s serious about it—should be interesting to see how he performs. I’m hoping to make it out to watch some matches. Would be great to see him make a strong run this weekend.

From a Google Maps review of The Corner Pocket:

The amount of illegal betting taking place at the pool tables is unsettling. How the Mississippi Gaming Commission has not gotten involved is unclear to me. You can sit anywhere near the tables and clearly see cash changing hands, open table betting and gambling on shots. While you cannot control everything at a venue, the establishment doesn’t seem to care if betting is taking place. Be careful visiting.
Sounds like my kind of pool hall/restaurant. You get entertainment with your burger. I wonder if they lost a proposition bet.

be careful of nosy puritans writing pearl clutching google reviews

That's why the BigTymeRoad show left Miss., someone got pissed and narc'd them to the law. When it first started they'd have weekly events that were like 30bux entry with a 20K+ calcutta. A buddy used to live in Meridian and he killed it for a while.

Was it the cash prizes or the calcutta that the DA didn't like?

You would think that law enforcement has bigger crimes to pursue then betting on pool.
Bet yourself into poverty at a casino but don't you dare play $20 9 ball or one pocket.

Sports betting is legal in Mississippi, but only at licensed casinos and on casino grounds.

Reed? Humm nice....''welcome back''..... now there's Davenport/Archer/Rodney for yrs/Hatch/Bergman/ who's next?
Rempe? :))))

same law applies at Derby but somehow they get around it. only gambling there is supposed to be casino games only but somehow they get a pass during DCC week.

Also from Google maps review: "This place is an absolute standout. The atmosphere is top-notch—clean, well-lit, and refreshingly free of distractions. It’s clear that people come here to actually play pool, and the quality of the tables reflects that—hands down the best around." I think it is the best around central MS. I don't spend much time there, but I would be surprised if they didn't have gambling.

I initiated a Wikipedia article on Reed Pierce. It needs to be updated. A while back, Reed Pierce and his brother, Ronnie, owned an upscale billiards sports bar and restaurant, bearing Reed Pierce's name in Byram, Mississippi. Inside the restaurant is an actual pool room named 9-Ball Lounge, and it had eight Diamond regulation-size pool tables.

Reed did win the US Open 9-Ball Championship in 1995, defeating Efren Reyes, 11-6, who won it the year before. Billy Incardona and Grady Mathes in the commentary booth. It nice to see him enjoying pool again.

I only met him once. He is quite a character! I would love to see @Gonzo09 interview him on Legends of the Cue.

Feels like any of the prior winners and near winners at the US Open 9 ball events of past, they will are Are doing well on 7' tables with tight pockets.
Their mental game was always an edge they had on most all their opponents.

I wish him the best in his comeback, but at 63 and a quarter century since his last significant wins is too long. He may do well in regional events but has no chance against top level competition. For him to even be able to compete with Johnny, Earl or CJ would be a stretch.

I didn't get the feeling that he had any intention of playing outside of the region.

SAJ used to have Reed Pierce and Mark Cavalier as his 2 sneak up on somebody players. Funny for how good Reed plays/played, he could sneak around and play for big $$$.

That rest/bar/room has been closed since '18 iirc. Was a nice joint.

It changed hands a couple of times and just closed in the past year. Most recently it was called Dockery Grill. I work with the brother of the most recent owner. They weren't pool players so I think they focused more on the restaurant side. That's a shame because you are right it was a nice place. I played a couple of tournaments there. There are two other places in the area that host weekly tournaments and APA leagues. I think they pulled the business away
