It's a gorgeous cue. I almost bought it from Paul in VF, and kind of wish I had, but the piggy bank is a bit empty at the moment.

    Josswest Points

Glad to see there's someone as anal as I about sharp points. BTW, is that a Northern or a Musky in your avatar? Weight? Where, when and how caught? It's a terrific fish.

    Josswest Points

Thanks for the education; as somebody who had a hard time getting through high school shop, I'm awed by what cuemakers can do with wood. Yes, I'd still like the cue more with sharp points, but that's purely a matter of taste and doesn't diminish my respect for the quality of Stroud's workmanship.

Sorry, digital camera is on the fritz, but I think those familiar with Josswests will know what I mean.

    Josswest Points

I just bought a mid-level Josswest and the workmanship is great, but his points (done by CNC, I think) are not sharp. My question is whether CNC points can be sharpened by hand. To each his own, but I don't think rounded points belong on high-end cues.

    Al Romero SP

At this price I assume he didn't do his own splice, yet the points are cleaner and sharper than the Valley Supremes (or Dufferins) I've seen. I think he may have thrown in the extra shaft and the JPs (which are admittedly no thing of beauty) because the cue took a lot longer than he predicted.

    Al Romero SP

I just got an SP from "Little Al" Romero. It's a true Sneaky--no butt cap or joint collars--and, in line with my request, there's nothing fancy about the butt wood (which I can't identify)--it even appears to be plugged in one or two places. But the splices are clean and sharp and I have to...

    Josswest CNC

I read that Stroud has started using CNC, and I noticed that some of his cues are up for auction at what seem to be very low prices. I assume these are newer CNC cues that aren't considered as desirable, correct?

Frey SP I have a Frey SP and like it a lot. I think the standard trip is triangle.

    back stroke

My stroke improved greatly once I started bringing the cue farther back on the backstroke. It sort of "loads" your stroke and makes it much smoother, so all you really have to do is let the cue go rather than force it.

I continue to believe that Chris's cues are one of the best values around.

    Inconsistent Hit

I have a fairly high-end cue that has an inconsistent hit. Sometimes it's fine, but at others it's dead and there's vibration. Joint is sleeved ivory over ebony. I'm hoping the problem is just a loose ferrule or tip but would welcome any thoughts.

    lucasi, pros-cons

I bought two for my sons. Both had the wraps coated with something-or-other, and on both the wraps have loosened and/or unraveled to the point where the cues are not useable. I think some of their cues don't have coated wraps, and they may be OK.

    Courtland v. Irish Linen

Cortland Fly fishing being my other major obsession, I can report that Cortland is still very much in business. In the days when braided linen was still in use, the strength (pound-test) was described in terms of the number of threads in the braid: three-thread, four-thread, etc. Don't know...
