Can someone explain what's happening in this video?

Darren Appleton is coaching a girl in this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-MMMmuQ7ig

For some shots, the girl follows the CB into the corner pocket after the OB. For other shots she makes the CB hit the end rail after pocketing the OB in the corner pocket. What is she doing to get different results? Based on the discussion, it doesn't sound as simple as cheating the pocket.

Thanks.

It looks to me like what he's explaining is by slightly changing the angle of the cue she's able to follow it at different angles. Might be a touch of spin required. On the second shot she's hitting it a little thicker but with a 'lil spin. She sure hits it pure.

He's saying that the "type" of top you use impacts where the cue ball goes. If you hit the cue ball with straight top (what Darren was saying is a level cue), the ball follows into the hole. That is, the top catches immediately, so the cue ball follows "straight." If you hit it with a little angle, the ball doesn't follow as quickly, so it has a chance to deviate slightly from the line, resulting in the cue ball ending up (ever so slightly) to right right of the hole. It's VERY slight movement to the side of the shot line, but that's all you need to avoid the scratch. I believe you can accomplish the same effect by hitting with the level cue, but hitting harder (kinda like the last shot where you want enough top to get back up table).

The very last segment it seems Apple says the elevation angle of the stick and the tip contact point (still on the vertical CL of the CB) is what the difference is. Not changing the cut angle or any sidespin.

BTW, does anyone know who the girl is? This video was 5 years ago. If she stuck with pool, we might see her name in some pro events.

Edit, found it:
Phaa Hmaunpao, and the YouTube video in the first post is actually her own channel.

Very good explanation. So you think no spin just angle of cue makes the change? Pretty cool. Gotta try this.

It doesn't matter what they discussed, but ill tell you what happened.

It's basically a little bit of cheating the pocket with a little bit of forced follow.

When you force follow a ball with a little bit of force, meaning hitting it harder a little bit, it basically glances in the opposite direction, which creates a new path going forward when the follow takes.

So ideally, cut the ball a little bit to the left, not by alot just by a fraction. i.e. cheating a little bit, with new cloth, the cueball will glance to the right, and thats how she is hitting the rail, and if you notice the last one the cueball did not glance far enough, and it did not hit to the right of the pocket by alot, just by a little margin, that is because it glanced a little bit.

He's having her hit a little closer to center and a little harder on the shots where she wants the CB to deflect further to the right. Smooth (softer and higher) follow will follow the OB more directly, whereas punched or "force" follow can get the CB further to the right by using more speed and less top.

Correct. Side spin won’t really impact this shot. Actually only make it harder to pocket.

Yes this is exactly what he is teaching- a perfectly smooth , level, stroke at a "rolling" cue ball speed with true "top" high cue tip to cue ball contact will create the most "immediate" and hence straightest follow towards the pocket on a direct straight in shot.
she is hitting the rail to the right of the pocket by using more "force follow" stroke and cue ball contact point a bit lower with the cue tip, and greater initial speed of stroke. You can do the same thing with draw!

This is an excellent explanation. She even has her own cool nickname "SHE WOLF"

The guy standing just caught his boyfriend cheating on him....not sure whether the "boyfriend" is the one kneeling or humping.
