Mr. Earl Strickland busted a $1,000,000.00 jackpot, and that is alot of zeros, for running out a set from the opening break of the set in a old Texas express format 9 Ball tournament. It was either 11 or 13 racks!

Is there any one out there that knows who the cue maker was that made that exact cue?

A PM answer is fine. Was that before his big cue indorsement deal?
Either way no body does it like The Earl when he kicks it into overdrive.
Much Thanks
Nick :)

Thank You Gentleman!

I am gratefull! I rember him getting mad and biting into one of my friends meuccie cues after he missed a shot on a bear table so hard he left teeth marks in the forearm of the cue! Roy showed me the cue and said can you believe that Strickland left dents in my cue . I replied man he really beat on it. He said," Beat on it hell he bit it! He bit the $hit out of it." I told him "You know that makes it worth more! I thought his eyes were going to pop out of his head when he heard me say that!

I don't think that Meucci is solvent enough to sponsor Earl, or that might be a good choice. 2 Icons of pool could get together and resureck each other.

I think he used a CUETECH. They began to sponsor him in the early 90's and EARL ran his 1m$ 11 pack at CJ's in Dallas in about 96-98. Perhaps someone that was there can confirm.

That stick was old Roy's pride and joy and the more he talked about it the madder he got.
So when he heard my comment about it being worth more and this was probably 15 years ago, he got so mad I thought he was going to just spit!!

If I remember correctly, the 9 on the 10th rack that won him the million was a table length combo to boot. Freakin ice water in them veins.

A story that circulated widely at the time.

The insurance(?) company that footed the bill balked at paying off
and Earl settled for a reduced ammount after some negotiations.
The million-dollar-runout idea was a prommotion suposed to spark
interest in tournament play. Someone had convinced the actuaries, or whoever, at the financial instition with the fuduciary(sp) responsibility
that it would take about a zillion years before anybody broke and
ran 9 racks in a row - and Earl did it in the FIRST tournament.

Jay, can you shed any light?

I have also heard that he didn't receive the full amount due to a technicality of some kind. I'm not sure, but I think it had something to do with combos on the 9, or snapping the 9 or something not being counted as a break and run.
Anybody?

Basically true. I don't have time for the full story now. It was ten racks by the way, and he did run an 11th for good measure. It was at CJ's in 1996 and he made a long combo on the 9 to win.

I'm almost certain he won the $1,000,000 with his Cuetec cue. He also used the Cuetec against Efren Reyes in the race to 120 games of 9 ball in Hong Kong for $100,000 winner take all and Efren came from 17 racks down on the 3rd and last day to beat Earl. That match is one of the most exciting offensive matches of 9 ball that you will ever see!

Things I remember about the "$1M" run by Earl.

He ran 11 consecutive racks, against Nick Mannino, during the first PCA tournament, in 1996. The PCA was CJ's foray into tournament production.

The payoff was for anyone who could break and run 10 racks. Earl took a reduced amount (undiscolosed). CJ at one point gave Earl $50k out of his own pocket to carry him over as the insurance carrier negotiated.

The insurance carrier initially refused to pay because the run was not videotaped so there was no complete proof that he completed the necessary run.

There were several 9-ball snaps. Folks realized that would look suspicious, so the TD stepped in to rack the last few racks. Was Helfert the TD?

Earl used his usual Cuetec. After completing the run, he tossed the cue in the air and failed to catch it. It broke.

This is not the only time I've seen a pro run 10+ racks in competition (we all know about Archer's 13 in side action). I watched Alain “The Dancing Bear” Martel run the set in Milwaukee against Jon Kucharo somewhere around 1998. Jon was leading 4-0 I believe and did not make a ball on the break. He sat the rest of the set.

The 11 racks was against Nick Mannino. The insurance company balked at paying the Million because the complete run was not videotaped. There were also semantics involved in the wording - saying that Earl snapped in a few nines in on the break, made a few combo's, and did not actually "run" 10 racks of 9 ball as the challenge for the pay off stated. This occurred in the early rounds of the PCA's maiden event. Sadly, this milestone would also be the beginning of the end for the short lived PCA - and for those wondering - Nick Mannino smiled in awe throughout Earl's run. Nick is definitely one of the nicest, classiest men to ever play the game.
