I played a pool game for a while last night that I've only played or seen at this one pool hall, and I was wondering if it exists in other places. It's called "one fifteen".
It's a four-player game. You draw pills to decide what order the 4 shoot in. You rack all 15 balls, in a specific order that puts the 1 in the front, the 15 in the middle, and the higher-numbered balls in places where they're less likely to go in off the break.
Once the rack is broken, you play kind of like a ring game at first. Play fouls where they lie, scratches go behind the line, every shot must be an honest effort to pocket a ball, incoming player after a foul can make the previous player shoot again, all balls pocketed on a foul stroke spot up. There are two balls "on" at any time though; the lowest AND highest ball on the table. Shots are not called, and combos are allowed.
Of the 4 players, the person who pockets the 1 and the person who pockets the 15 are on a team for the rest of the rack. The other players make up the other team. This holds true if the same player sinks both the 1 and the 15 ("going it alone"). Each ball is worth its numerical value in points, and you play until one team gets to 61. The team that has the 1 and 15 almost always gets to 61 first, since the 15 is the most valuable ball, and since if they were the first to get the 1 and 15, they probably also had the first opportunity to run a bunch of points.
It's always played for some stake per rack. Each player on the losing team pays a player on the winning team, meaning if you win as a pair you win one stake, and if you win going it alone you win 3 stakes. If you do go it alone, it's best to make sure you have everything in the open to get to 61 before you commit, since if you miss, all three other players get a turn before you get back to the table (which usually spells doom).
So now that I've explained it as well as I can, has anyone ever played it or seen it played elsewhere? Perhaps by some other name?
