1000 Fargo

Do you believe Meglino should make the team?

All I know Stu is if he played Styer or Billy, my money is on Meglino. His game is still improving....Styer has gone backwards.
Based on his skills alone, Anthony belongs on the team and would strengthen Team USA.

The issue is that he sits out most of the WNT tournament schedule, so he will probably not earn one of the three automatic qualifying sports for Team USA unless he has a top two finish at the Florida Open or a top three finish at the US Open. That means he would likely have to be a wildcard pick, and quite understandably, players that don't participate much in WNT play are far less likely to be selected as wildcards.

Of course, Matchroom's "mood of the moment" is a factor here. A few years ago, they included a player who had played in just one WNT major that year, namely Earl Strickland. In 2024, they omitted Josh Filler, the best 9ball player in the world, who played in nearly all the WNT majors but skipped the Hanoi Open. Yet another time, they named Russian Fedor Gorst to Team USA. There's really no predicting their next move when it comes to the Mosconi Cup.

From a marketing standpoint, the inclusion of a Floridian when the Mosconi is being played in Florida might just work. I saw how much fanfare came Athony's way at last year's Florida Open. In addition, he is a quality guy and a good representative for pro pool.

It's a given that someone will be 1000. There is rate creep inherent in it. Filler, Shane, Fedor, etc, aren't playing better than they did when they were barely in the 800's. It has to do with more higher rated players that they're playing against.
I'll disagree. They are playing better. Even if their average shots are exactly the same, they are under more pressure because everybody (on average) is getting better.

"It's not how good you are, it's how consistent you are. Which actually is how good you are".

I think a strong team would be:

SVB
Fedor
Skyler
Anthony Meglino
Jesus Atencio.

Anthony and Jesus would have super home-field advantage since they both live in Florida. And as seen in previous tournaments, Jesus has a STRONG fanbase in Florida, people show up to watch and support him there. Europe would certainly be feeling the pressure going against a crowd like that, on top of having to face opponents who can actually beat them, unlike Tyler and Billy.

Anthony would have to speed up his game to fade the shot-clock. And of course, he is a working man, so it would be hard to play in all tournaments to earn points, as sjm stated. But he certainly has the skill. I can't think of a single area of the game where Jesus is lacking, except maybe residency and/or citizenship. He just gets better and better. Fedor isn't a citizen but plays for USA, so Matchroom can make the same exception. Jesus is like the AJ Manas of Florida :ROFLMAO: and that's exactly what Matchroom is looking for, more engagement and more attraction to the game.

I don't see any better options as of right now. Maybe things will change in 9-10 months and the American players will improve.

My money is on Styler, dude has been on Mosconi Cup team since 2018. 2 missed 9-ball shots and everyone saying he is done?
Styler vs the rest of the players who people want them to be on Mosconi Cup (such as Meglino, Jesus, Oscar, Bergman, Lucas, BJ, Hennessy etc.), , 9-ball, each race to 40 or so. I'll pay $29.99 to watch the stream each match. I like Styler because he has a very very very solid pool fundamentals (stance, stroke etc.) his mental game will improve as he ages, he will be in the 800 Fargo club soon.

No idea who plays Ultimate Pool, but I see some promise in all of Sam Henderson, Eric Roberts, Nathan Childress, Payne McBride and Landon Hollingsworth, as well as the aforementioned Lazaro Martinez and Hayden Ernst. Along with Lucas Fracasso Verner, these are the young guns that might make Team USA at the Mosconi before their careers are over. I'm sure there are others, but these are the ones I've seen play.
dont sleep on Laz's younger brother, Gabriel Martinez.

I'll make you a bet and say Tyler will not be winning any WNT major tournaments in 2026. There are hundreds if not thousands of players with very very very solid pool fundamentals, but that alone doesn't equate to winning.

I would love to be proven wrong though, as I do admire and love his dedication and tenacity for the game. I just don't think he has that killer-instinct that a champion needs. Maybe he needs to gamble more.

We're talking about making USA Team Mosconi cup only, you don't have to win a title, finishing high and get as may points as possible will do, I like Styler chance this year.

There are not thousands of players with very very very solid pool fundamentals :cautious: may be solid and very solid, not very very very solid :ROFLMAO:

Based on the fact that Tyler plays in more tournaments than the rest of the players who want to be on the team, statistically he will earn the most points, it is inevitable. But if Bergman, Oscar, Jesus and Anthony played in the same amount of tournaments as Tyler, I have them earning more points.

Tough to have both Anthony Meglino and Jesus Atencio. Jesus has a much bigger chance to make the team due to his popularity alone. The truth is that nobody except a few of us here in the US knows who Meglino is, I'm talking about international audience. Meglino needs to put in his PTO and start to play more events. :ROFLMAO:

Agreed, Meglino needs more star power. But it would be cool to see his talent alone get him on the main stage.

The tournament a week or 2 after Mosconi he looked like he was still traumatized. Missed a easy shot every rack.

He wasnt at Mosconi to my knowledge.

I will always bet a hot hand over someone on the decline. Looks like he has peaked.

There is always room at the top if you are good enough....some won't ever be.

They love Billy....he will be on there for decades.

Styer won't be playing next year...that's what I'd bet.

Without sponsorship and a willingness to forgot his current life, Meglino won't be on the WNT tour. That's the same hurdle anyone has now with the expense of staying out on tour.

i would guess neither makes the team next year. especially if it's true bergman will compete in WNT, and if atencio is eligible

Bergman is a non factor. He doesnt leave home. Guy dont even play Derby. Pure waste of talent.

Jesus is da bomb...but unless matchroom changes their rules, he isn't a citizen.

They let Wolford play before and he doesn't hit many WNT events.

They need a captain who will put 2 guys on the team that play at higher levels....Styer and Billy just have to go.

Team that could win:
Sky
SVB
Fedor
Meglino
Johnathan Pinegar

Derby shows the last two are players.

No human has ever played better than Josh Filler in Derby Nine Ball...including Josh Filler.

His Fargo is justified as highest ever.
