This question is meant in all seriousness (and my ignorance) . . . why is the term oriental offensive?

Well I do not know and do not care. I like Oriental food, like Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Thi, etc. etc. etc.

Wonder if the Slag Terms we used in the 60's for VC, (Viet Cong) would offend anyone. :D

Oriental Of or pertaining to the Orient or to it's PEOPLE. An inhabitant of Asia; an Asian.
Your argument is with Sidney I. Landau, the Editor in Chief of the Webster Illustrated Contemporary Dictionary.

God, you are hard headed, but I still love ya!
Purdman
Landau... hmm... doesn't sound Asian... :p

(Love ya too!)

Yeah I know, but that is what they teach in the universities here or anywhere else they study the English language!
Purdman :p

I guess you didn't make it to English 101. :D

I am right there with you.. sushi is so damn delicious as well as many Korean and Czechuan chinese dishes...

Joe (--looks like its a hibachi type of night :)

Wow, am I ever sorry I posted some details of American immigration law. You really need to go back and revise your history to make it much more politically correct. Certainly an excellent job for a small army of civil servants in DC, fixing up history so that people are not offended by it.

Was met at the Entrance by an angles, who informed me the entire time I was in Heaven I could only have one Kind of Food. I choose Chinese, as you got Schewezwan (spelin?), Mandarin, Cantonese, etc., etc., etc. Love CHINESE Food. YUM YUM.... :D

A person is Asian. Oriental is used to describe food, furniture, et cetera.

If you are from Canada you are Canadian.
If you are from America you are American.
If you are from England you are English.
If you are from the Netherlands you are a Nethe...???? Dutch (oh well they are weird forget them)

Scotland = Scottish Spain = Spanish Russian = Russian

etc. etc. etc.

If you are from the Orient = Oriental

with the Orient being part of Asia, you could say you are from Asia = Asian

But to get offended if you are from the Orient and someone calls you Oriental sounds weird.

I often wondered if you were a white person from Africa and you immigrated to the United States and became an American would you now be an African-American.

I have a friend who's from South Africa, he's white but when asked his ethnic background he says South African. Some people who don't know that alot of white people live there give him a funny look.

Here is something else to think about. The word Colored, and Negro are NOW POLITICALLY INCORRECT.

But if an African American kid, or Black Kids want to got to College they will accept help, or a scholarship from, The United Negro College Fund.

If a African American Kid, or Black Kids need legal help they will accept it services from, The NAACP, (aka The National Association for the Advancement of Color people)

Like I said something g to think about in a politically correct World. Can you say D O U B L E S T A N D A R D....

That is so pathetic! This is getting to be common theme at these large events... I'd even guess it's the same person/people.

Tony is a really good guy and all my experiences with Tiger have been very positive and their work is top notch. They especially do the best the can to return a person's cue as fast as possible knowing we 'need' our cues. Wish them the fastest recovery of their property.
If I had $100,000 - $ 200,000 worth of anything sitting in a parking lot I think I would make sure it couldn't walk away that easily. hmmmmm...As far as stereotyping thievery,,,the most sofisticated thieves in Vegas are well educated american college students. The insurance company is going to have fun with this one.

Trailer theft, racial slurs and being PC...

I would never call another person an Oriental, and am offended when referred to as an "Oriental" myself. To people who are ignorant to that, I politely correct them.

Charlie is his "American" name. His Korean name is Heoun Ho Kim. My mother is Yi Ok Sun, but people here call her Melinda. Our Korean friends call her Ok Sun.

Marissa, I think you need to lighten up. ;)

While "Oriental" isn't politically correct, I don't see is as a slur. It seems like more of an outdated way of describing an ethnic group. This being my opinion only...

Back on topic;

I spoke to a person, whose opinion I respect, regarding the trailer theft at the Riv. Apparently, this happens alot, there. This isn't a case of targeting Pool people or an "inside job". Supposedly, the Riv has alot of conventions and this is a thing that happens. Maybe it's due to the fact that the Riv has no secure lot and there are convenient escape routes out the back of the parking lot. What's the answer? I dunno. Maybe it's time to invest in Lojack. I've put Lojack in a few cars I've owned because they had a high chance of being ripped off. Lojack is unique in that it gives off a tracing signal when your car is boosted. Also, you can get a beeper to alert you the second your car(or trailer) is being moved.

Hell, maybe I'll be a pitchman for Lojack :p

I've been trying REALLY HARD to stay out of this thread, but this is too much to ignore. I am 100% is Marissa's camp on this one. You no more call an Asian "Oriental" than you would a black man "colored". Both were perfectly acceptable decades ago. But fortunately the world changes.

Another BIG difference, WAYNE, is that I can find America, Canada, England, Russia, etc, on the map. But my damn 6' Wall Map doesn't have anywhere called the ORIENT. And I travel to Asia every month (really), but don't believe I have ever met an Oriental.

Yes, I saw the definition in the dictionary as posted herein. But here is an actual C&P for "Colored":
b. Black or African-American
c. Of mixed racial descent
Lets see how far you get by using "colored" to describe Black people. Oriental is equally offensive.

Because someone found it in the dictionary has exactly squat to do with the fact that referring to an Asian as "Oriental" is a slur, offensive, and a disparaging term for any Asian person. This isn't about being Politically Correct, it's about the use of archaic, offensive slang.

I own 3 factories in Asia, and am married to a wonderful Asian lady. Even my fuckin dog is Asian. It infuriates me when some ignorant ass uses an archaic term like Oriental when describing a person. Yes, ERIC, it is a slur.

Fortunately, I live in Cali and have NEVER herard anyone use Oriental to describe an Asian person. Of course, we don't say "colored", "raghead" or "wetback", either. AND YES, they are all equally offensive.

Great post.

I really love Eric's post...one of my all time faves

I didn't quote it, but it went something like this:

Oriental is not a racial comment, I am Asian myself.

Theres a word that describes that (i just can't remember it). Thanks for ok'ing it "Mr. Oriental". Now that I know you are policing these boards for us 'Orientals', I can live happier and safer knowing that a fellow Oriental has got my back.

By the way, I am Chinese, and I think the word ch!nk is ok, so don't worry, I got your back too. Lets have everyone call me and you a Ch!nk now, by the way..pulling ur eyelids to make slant-eyes..thats good in my book too.

Signing Off

Fellow Asian Brethren.

Here this might help you find it: "designating the region that includes SE Asia south of the Himalayas, the Phillipines, Sumatra, Java, Borneo and other associated continental islands."

Oh and your dog said he doesn't appreciate that slur about him.

Nope, sorry but still no place called Orient, therefore, no Orientals.

My dog? Well, unlike you and yours, he has the benefit of 1500 years of good breeding. He was being bred for intelligence and temperament centuries before your forefathers even thought about screwing the hired help in the hen house. :p
