12.3mm vs 12.5mm vs 12.75mm shaft

19.58943 mm

Seriously? Do a search. There are a million threads on this and the end result is...
It doesn't matter, it's preference.

Pick one and stick with it or learn to adjust. As Dave M stated it is simply a preference.

Personal preference. Have played with all 3, plus 11.75mm, no difference other than feel.

I've been on a bit of a shaft quest lately. Wasn't happy with the state of my current 314-2, has been whittled down over the years and no longer standard. Bought 3 shafts in the last month or two, played in 4 tourneys over 5 weeks with each of the shafts, won them all. I guess it's the archer, not the arrow... :)

That being said, I didn't play my best any of the 4 weeks. I do expect a certain performance, feel, etc. out of the equipment, and as I struggle to get the right shaft and tip combination working for me there are a few shots here and there that I'm missing. But overall it's more about the feel of the shot, and not the actual result, that makes the difference as to shaft width, tip hardness, etc.

Redhead, blonde, or brunette. Which hair color do you think is the best overall for dating?

I know which one I tend to choose, but I have no answer for you.

To me: 9 mm upto 12,5 mm. Thicker i have sometimes problems with aiming the right piont to hit the cueball.

I like a 9 mm too. When I read threads like this one,I can put it to my head and pull the friggin trigger :banghead: :help::banghead: :help::banghead: :help::banghead: :help:

I use a 12.666666666666

The Devil Shaft!

I have and play with anything from 12.75 down to a Pred Z at 11.75.

I currently use a 12mm, altho my favorite shafts are anywhere from 12.35 to 12.50mm.

I feel obviously that the 12.50 is the happy medium between 13 and 12. Me good at math eh.

I don't think that the game of 9 Ball has any bearing on what your shaft diameter preference should be tho.

12.3 to 12.50mm. I doubt that you would be able to really visibly see the difference, it would be so slight at .20 of a mm.

Start with the smallest size, you can always add on

Exactly how do you mean that? Start with a 12.75. You can always have a repairman take it down for you until you find what you like.

Some funny quips........

Just remember this......Thin = Spin.

Sadly.....it happens unintentionally even on some center ball stroke of the cue ball.

9 ball...8 ball....10 ball....14:1.....3 ball.....doesn't matter.....but 3 cushion....thin shafts always.

Bavafongoul has a point that the thinner shafts do help you put more english and draw on the ball. But the unintentional english with a thinner shaft can drive you crazy! I have shot with all the predator shafts and have recently been going back to a maple shaft. By starting with a 13mm shaft and slowly turning it down, the pivot point moves from around 6-7 inches and at about 12mm the pivot point on my shaft seems to be around 13 inches. This coincides with my normal bridge length, so unintended english doesn't squirt the cue ball and I still make the shot. The Z2 shaft pivot point seems to be around 18 inches which is too far back for me to use back hand english.

Throw with a thin shaft can be a beautiful thing... If intended!

Well, III Ball, welcome to the forum, with a little good-natured ribbing.

It really is about preference and the kind of "feel" you want from your shaft.

I am still on this journey, but I am developing a preference for a stiff hit, even to the point of ordering a new 13mm shaft with a straight taper. I believe I can get sufficient English on the ball with practice. I have decided to go thick, because I can always have the shaft turned down thinner (in stages) if I do not like it thick.

I strive to play for position in every game, so I do not make a distinction for 9 ball.

Good luck, and make use of the older forum posts. You can learn a lot here if you can filter through the "religious" arguments.
