14-1 to be replaced with 10-ball in Europe?

The European Championships have always been played in 3 diciplines, 14-1, 8-ball and 9-ball.

During the General Meeting for the EPBF about a month ago, the board wanted to replace 14-1 with 10-ball for the coming years.

All the nations at the meeting had to vote. (not sure how many, but probably like 30). When all the votes were counted only 1 vote was the difference.... the boards request luckily lost.

Could it be that in a few years 14-1 will no longer be played in tournaments in Europe either?

I Can't believe that i am reading this. 14.1 is the godfather of pool and cannot ever be replaced or just Deleted from history.

The game is a true art when played correctly !

i hope that day never comes

Their Nuts

10 Ball should replace 9 Ball and they should do away with "Slop" and make it call your pocket just like 8 Ball & Straight.
It will be a sad day if they ever do away with 14-1.

It's retarded to have both 9 and 10 ball. Yeah they're different games, especially at high level, but they are still far too similar to need both in the same tour. The whole point of 10-ball is to replace 9 ball with a more fair game where the break isn't everything (but is still important).

Just do that or leave the arrangement alone. You don't need 2 out of the 3 games being something where you don't call shot, and you must race to 100 just to make sure nobody is winning with luck. Keep the one game that is clearly fair where the better player is supposed to win... even in a short race.

That proposal is absurd. A very good example of the idiocy that imo contributes to pools inability to grow as a significant sport.

Besides it should be the players voting for this, not representatives of organizations.

+1.

I'm perplexed that this only lost by one vote. While they're at it why don't they replace 8 Ball with that screwy 7 Ball game? Oh, and make the soft break mandatory.

Roy, might you be able to send along some email addresses for the powers-that-be? I'd love to politely bombard them with our thoughts.

Thanks,
Steve

I can do nothing but support all the words above. Straight pool is the only real game of pool, did they forget? I can't imagine who could suggest to replace 14.1 and not 9-ball, having both 10-ball and 9-ball in the schedule. Well, they might say, 10-ball is different to 9-ball in a way it is a called game (official rules by WPA), and it was the way played at recent Eurotour.
But I'm shocked to learn that stupid idea almost won.

Roy, do you think we should send our comments to Gre Leenders? Or someone else?

That's really depressing. Roy, can you give us some insight as to why so many countries wanted to dump 14.1? Poor attendance for 14.1? Small TV audiences? Nobody plays it in Euro billiard rooms? Just curious as to why they would want something as nonsensical as having both 9 and 10 ball in the championships, and no straight pool.

Despite its virtual disappearance in the USA, I was counting on Europe to preserve pool's best game.

It is pretty obvious for anyone with some intelligence that 10 ball should replace 9 ball and not straight pool. In Europe, 14.1 is somehow popular... why abandon it? What about Engert, Feijen, Ouschan, Ortmann, etc. that have played 14.1 for the EPBF and are at the highest level of the sport?

That is absurd. The more I read about pool's federations, governing bodies and promoters... the less I understand the need for them.
