Congratulations to Joe Durham (jbravo2984)
and Ken Lee for taking first and second respectively in the Red Shoes 14.1 tournament yesterday.

I don't have too many details as my bad back kept me out of the tournament and I just went and watched for a few hours.

It was nice to see some new players competing. Should have been a good warmup for the Qualifier on September 18.

Thanks for the News Report Dennis, and sorry to hear that you have back troubles. I know all about back problems, very long story i'll tell you about it over a Sam's in october !!

The cool thing about the tournament was that we had three new players.

The one who won it, is not a regular 14.1 player but when asked how he liked it said:

"BRUTAL! LOL> It sucks when you're watching the other guy run and run and run. But when you're the one keeping the opponent seated and you have a tough break out shot, you know he's thinking "miss! miss!". When you hit it perfect and everything just works for a nice run of thirty or more, you have to love it. I had fun, I just barely squeaked it out. I'll be there for the next one for sure. Thanks pal and see you soon!

We may just have a new convert.

The guy who took second is a very good nine ball player and I think he is a good one pocket player, too. He was talking about learning the patterns and getting better. Maybe another convert.

The third place guy came down about 100 miles from Wisconsin or near the border. I played him in a tournament 5 years ago up his way. It was nice to see him down at the shoe.

Another guy drove down from Milwaukee to play. He was shocked when I told him we had 20 in the Red Shoes League and the Fall league may need to be split in two cuz we may have 30. And... We have leagues of 14 and 16 signed up for IBC starting September 19. He said "No one plays it in Wisconsin. It's alive down here, though". That guy signed up for the qualifier.

So the rumors of the death of straight pool are premature for the moment.

It aint dead but in S.E. Wisconsin it's kinda pale from loss of blood. Just a small handful of us keep it breathing. We just finished a session of our 14.1 round robin and a new session starts Sep. 12. That's at Boomers in Sturtevant. We have room for more players.

Note: I am not an official. Just one of the players.

Great work scouting and converting new 14.1ers !!!!

Keep up the good work and we may just reach global domination !!!!

That's cool. Is it a handicapped league?

I know that Boomer's is one Oasis of 14.1 in the Midwest. I still remember going up to that tournament to watch where Chris beat Jon Demet in the finals. Lots of good players were up there.

Yes, the leagues are handicapped and this tournament was handicapped, too. If someone is not a member of either league, we try to handicap them based upon what we know about them or how we think they play.

Sometimes, we don't do a real good job at that .

But, we intend to improve.

Score one for ATM Joe! :thumbup2:

I heard after the tournament that we had a local celebrity in our midst. He seems to like the game.

One of the guys there beat me in a straight pool tournament at Grayslake. No one knew him. My handicap is about 145 or 150. They made him a 110 and then took it down to 80% of that.

Anybody with a nickname must be a celebrity.

You played pretty close with Ken in the final match so the numbers sounded ok.
