2 cues for trade or sell

I have a older Schon in great shape, from the early 90s, 6 points, and an Ariel Carmeli, almost new, in great condition, I want to trade for a good playing cue which I can keep a long time. I am going to the DCC next month. Do the cue traders out side in the lobbies give you a fair deal or should you stay away from them because they are trying to make a bundle on a trade. I just want a fair deal for both of us, don't want to take advantage of anyone but don't want to be taken advantaged of either. Any advice would help. Thanks in advance
 
I have spoken to dealers who state that people walking around have gotten the better end of the deal and they make "no money" at the shows. I think the only way to go is to decide in your own mind what you want to get out of your cues, and stick with it in a trade deal or a sale. I think its funny when people say that they got hosed like they didn't have the choice to say "NO". That is such a simple little word that has worked well for me in the past.

When you attempt to trade with someone, I either start at retail to retail or wholesale to wholesale. Most dealers will try to trade you their retail to your wholesale because they got their cue wholesale and will have to sell yours at retail to make the same money on the cue that they would have made selling their cue retail. Again the small word "NO" is all it takes not to get screwed.

My experience at Derby City and cues

I buy and sell several cues each year at DCC. I have mentioned it a few times but I will give my impression of deals at DCC.

1.) Most if not all dealers are CUE rich and CASH poor. Your best deals are going to be cash, not trades. That being said if you are going to sell it, sell it now and then go with cash in hand, verses a $1000 cue that you want to trade for another $1000 cue.

2.) Second, if you are going to trade cues, at least last year my experiences, if it didnt have full 13mm shafts, they didnt want it, and if they didnt want it, it gets tough to trade if a guy doesnt want to trade. So again, if it has full sized shafts, trading is possible, if it doesnt sell it before you get there.

3.) If you have a cue that is used, I dont care if it is a great cue. Consider getting it refinished. Obviously, not a George or Gus, but I did great on cues I have aquired over the last year and got Scot at Profiecient to refinish before I put them on the block.

4.) Some dealers are partial to some cues and some to others. I was in multi cue deals between dealers and most want to make a deal, but always remember cash is king.

we will be int the aberdeen room (instead of the hall way) its more comfortable to make deals there . we allways entertain offers and check trades. if they have thin shafts it hurts it, or if the finish needs help we have to sit on the investment until the finish is redone. we try to be fair market to fair market on trade. we will also have alot of cues that are not on the web site . you can try out the cues with some dealers. and there will be many dealers there like cueaddicts,shuremancues,cue connisuer,omega billiards,brianna,ect.It is alot of fun! as far as trunk dealers selling in the hall they will be removed off the premisis if caught. diamond billiard is working to try to curb this activity. hope to see you there if you havnt been there befor it a experiance!!

I understand if you have a booth and have paid for it, yadda yadda. I am not a dealer but sell several cues. I take about 5-10 cues with me each year and try to make some deals.

Some I sell to dealers and some I sell to players.

Are you saying this isnt allowed?

It's kind of like parking your car in front of a Used Car lot and placing a "For Sale by owner" sign on it.
I find it unfair to dealers who pay for a booth to sell cues only to have these guys rip them off. In the long run this will only hurt the show/shows. So they should rid the hallways for these guys.
If anything I'm sure afew of the dealers wouldn't mind some sort of consignment deal for selling a cue for you.
 
From what I have heard from friends, the guys who show up with the 5-10 cues end up making the vast majority of their deals with guys like cornerstone, cuaddicts, etc.

Bill, Sean, etc. - Is this true. I personally have never been to the DCC, but would love to. I normally buy cues locally where I live and have traded quite a few with fellow AZers. I'm not trying to undercut anybody, just acquire cues I like when I see them. I normally try to trade up and make multi-cue deals. Is this discouraged as well?

I would speculate that you are referring to people who bring dealer cases of cues to peddle and not an individual who is looking to sell or trade a cue and happens upon another patron and strikes a deal. The sellers that roam the halls and try to make deals with prospective buyers at booths seem to be who you are describing.

Just so you know, I am not a "trunk dealer" and I actually bought a cue from you at DCC last year. That being said, if I want to make a deal with someone (not a dealer) in the hall for a cue, cash or trade, it should not concern you or anyone else.

I buy/trade a cue with Cueaddicts for ..

I have got a cue EACH year for the last 3 years from Cueaddicts.

Sold a cue to the Brianna cue guy, last year and bought another couple cues from Richard Minton.

So IMO, I deal with them and without the dealers.

Their are deals going on everywhere at DCC. If you know who to see
many people dealout of their rooms as far as I know these are honest people. Just taking another route. There are people walking the halls.
Some people go broke an have to sell their cues. I've never been to a
tour. in yrs without buying selling or trading with Salazar, traded an gave boot to cueaddicts an Murphy an bought or traded with other dealers as well. Pretty much you can do what you want its not a cue show its a tour.

a guy who hovers around booths and sees what a guy is selling or trying to make a deal on, and then whips out his 12x24 and corners the guy in the hall making deals right ther! I go there to buy and sell and i love people bringing in great stuff !and i dont mind the average deal between players but the people who bring 12 cues to sell to the public is wrong!jmo thanks and see you there i will have alot of new stuff for display!

I wouldn't say this is necessarily true. Most of the deals we've done over the years there (DCC) have been with guys coming by with just a cue or two wanting to sell or trade. BTW, the DCC has always been a good place for direct sales of players type cues....sub $1500.

With respect to trades, we always try to go "fair market to fair market", but some people get upset and don't understand it when you don't want to trade a $3000 retail Mottey for their $3000 retail Phillippi (nothing bad but some cues are just tougher moves than others). Also, if a cue is used, needs a refinish, with one 12mm shaft, and you want to trade it in for something that's pristine/new/mint with full shafts, those deals are at times very tough for a dealer to do. People need to understand that. Refinish and/or shaft work takes time to get done right and there's the obvious hassle of having to do it to get the cue marketable. As with everyone....time = money.
