The pool room would call the police if someone came in to play for money?....

In Phoenix the reply would be #7... "What are you rated??"

If the reply was "what is a rating" or something similar...There would probably be at least a few 9 or 10 rated players that would play...

I doubt any 8 or below rated player would play a road player "straight up" ...for one of two reasons....either they are not good enough to handle a road player....or they don't want to draw potential scrutiny to thier 8 or below rating if they happen to win.............(usually #1 is the actual reason)

LOL. As I said, I've travelled around a bit. I've only been to phoenix once and that was last year. I got done with my thursday work meeting and headed for a place called Alexanders (because I gathered they had a tournament a little later) --a nice little bar with a half dozen or so bar tables. There was a guy batting balls around when I walked in who had an instroke case and seemed to have a decent stroke. I asked him if he wanted to play a few games. His response was "What are you?"

Now in Des Moines last month I got a "Who are you?" but this was the first "What are you?" As I was thinking about the myriad interpretations of his question, he noticed the confusion on my face and added "You're not from around here are you?" He was an 8. We played for a while-- $2 games or something, and I came out a little ahead. Overall we played pretty even. They made me a 9 in the tournament--being cautious as is reasonable--and I later realized that I didn't play anywhere near as strong as any of the 9's. I think the winner after a few weeks got a trip to Vegas or something.

Anyway the next time I'm in Phoenix and somebody says "what are you?" I know how to respond.

What pool rooms have you been going to?? I have never seen anything close to that kind of reaction in 15 years of playing pool all around San Antonio.

> Whether I am at the pool room when someone like this shows up,or if someone calls me to come play,if the player asks for an even, cheap game like this with no spot-haggling or any of the usual shenanigans,I don't give a shit if they played Alex's speed, they have action, especially if no one else bites. I might only have 3-4 barrels in games like that at times, but they can get it if they can. A guy the older local guys had made out to be a legend came in once, and I was called to come play because no one else would, like normal. I didn't have a lot of cash, but agreed to play 10 a rack just to see what he had. I played well and he might have been stalling, but I got 10 games up and he paid me. We double the bet and go back and forth for about an hour, with the entire population of my town that gave a shit about pool watching me refuse to lay down for this "monster". I eventually put together a 4 rack run and wind up 5 game winner. He pays me off and QUITS. As I am unscrewing my cues,he asks me to play a race to 7 for 10,000,knowing good and well I didn't have that kind of money. I told him flat out "be glad I don't have that kind of roll, cause I'd DAMN SURE SEND IT IN!",in front of 40 people. The next day, when I pointed out that this guy was not only nowhere near the caliber of player they said he was,but he wasn't even the GUY they claimed he was, because that guy lives in Dothan,AL and had suffered a stroke several months before this game took place, they all tried to change their stories. So my point is this,if ANYONE offers to play you this cheap, even if you suspect he might be a world-beater,and you can afford to send it in a few times, and don't,you might be missing out on something, maybe even a single shot you can steal from them, that would make the monetary loss seem like a huge gain. MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY!!!

I agree- for players of a certain level any hoo. Sometimes you'll jus be a sucker tho, no mind what level you are.

something else can happen tho, if you should be fortunate to get waxed quickly the first set. Like this- a guy comes to my PH, plays a little better than I, but I don't get to played too often anyway, so I play him. problem is, I only have$60. I tell him I will play $10/ game, he says no, a set, we go to 7 for $50, blah blah, about 18 seconds later, it is 6-0, him. Dude is breaking like a monster, getting out from everrywhere. Rulin me! I lose 7-1 or 2 and tell him "Wow that's good for me. If you want to double the bet, I'll take the 7."
I get called a few names and accused of 0 gamble...I tell him "OK, I 'm loser and if you want to play more I am taking the 7. You got the cash". He says, you got the 7 but you gotta bet 4 ahead for $200.
To the bank! About 30 min later, I had the cash and he pulled up. Anyone know how hot he was after that?
