2006 AZ Straight Pool Challenge

My three best runs ever were 91, 90, and 88.

I played some straight pool on Monday and ran a 48. Will PM TheOne to let him know.

146 2004 June
134 2005 Aug
128 ?
122 1003 April
113 ?
108?
105?
72....a miss, then ran 113...2004

99 2001 (dogged 100)...I was way keyed up since this was my first possible 100.

74 last week.

I don't think I'll ever have the patience to run over 150, but I keep on trying. I try and run at least 40 every week.
Regards,
Doug

The best 3 runs I've ever had are 146, 129 and 127, but that was at least 10 years ago. I don't play as often now and when I do play it's usually 9-ball so my straight pool has declined quite a bit. I'm very happy now when I run the occasional 60 ball run.

Ran a few 30's, never cracked 40 until just past Christmas this last year...with my high run of 62 balls.

Very slow, worn cloth, but moderately difficult pockets.

Craig, good idea. I can set up a small database on my site so people can enter their own scores if that is easier. I already do this for my Straight Pool League: http://www.hobokenstraightpool.com/high.php

I've not played pool for a few weeks now (vacation), but I'm looking to get well into the 60s and 70s early this year. At the moment, my top three high runs are 47,45,44 all on a 9ft. I've had seven 40+ but not the breakthrough 60-70. One of them was against SJM though :)

I'm going to play tonight on my friend's 8' table... I'll let you guys know how I do! :p

Very badly. High run of 10 on an 8' table. We did a race to 100 and he had a high run of 14.

To tell you the truth, neither of us had great chances of breaking the balls up well. My friend would rather play safe than take a hard shot so it's pretty frustrating to play 14.1 against him! :(

Anyone else getting any straight pool runs going in 2006?

I often play equal offense when I practice. If I get to 20 in an inning, I record a 20 for EO but I keep going. So far in 2006, I've played four 10-inning rounds averaging about 100 per round.

My high run for 2006 is 34.

These are starting with ball in kitchen after an open break.

My top 3 runs are:

1. 142 to open the 2003 Downingtown, PA 14.1 finals (have it on tape - woohoo!)
2. 158-and-out to close a race-to-500 against a top shortstop from NYC
3. 177

But the first one above is the only one that would be on my list of favorites. Running out to win a match that your opponent should have closed on you in his last inning... those are my faves ;).

Here is my testimony

1) 112 in practice (2005)- witnessed (had 3rd party counting racks)
2) 103 in practice (2004)- no witness...but pretty confident on amount as I used a quarter to keep track of racks.
3) 93 in competition (2002).

The 103 was the toughest. Very slow cloth and tired old rails. Humid summer conditions. Really had to pound balls to open racks and clusters.

Hope for "seniors"...I broke 100 at the age 48. Now I want to do it at least once in competition. Problem is, i don't play as much anymore and very difficult to find 14.1 matches around here.

I remember the first time I broke 50 (1976)...had to use the bottom corner ball cross side bank shot from a full rack after missing the rack on my break shot. Anyone else ever do that to preserve a run?

IronDon,
My high runs (all in competition on a table like the AZB room) are 44, 45, & 45. On one of those runs (against a weak player....well...anyway, weaker than me if that's possible) I ended up against the stack, and had to shoot a 3 rail kick to knock in a ball that was close to one of the foot pockets.

For those that don't know it, IronDon is about 1/2 ball below MONSTER PLAYER. I think he and satman were obviously the class of the AZB room (and that's saying something). Why aren't you playing at DCC???????

Willie...
1) 40+ on tables like the Diamond in the AZ room are tough. Tougher conditions than the ones I had my high runs. Maybe my slow table run would be comparable.
2) You are too kind regarding my skills (you missed the dog show I put on in the finals of the Sat night 9 ball match), but thanks for the very nice comments.
3) I am hoping to play next year. All of my vacation time this year is allocated to prior commitments.

I managed to arrange a business trip through Louisville on Thursday so should stop by later this week to say hello to the crew in the AZ room.

THanks again for your work on this, a great idea.

does anyone want to make this a sticky since there may be gaps between high runs and when people get to to post?

I've had a few PMs suggesting this but just wondered what the general feeling was?

Please no!

I'm still celebrating the removal of the four sticky forum threads earlier this week. This is not of sufficiently general interest to merit being sticky.

Craig, just bump this thread to the top of the heap once a week if there's no activity and you'll keep it in play.

I'll post mine so other beginners might too:

1) 13 1/20/06
2) 12 10/05
3) 12 12/05

I've only been playing straight pool for a few months. All three of these runs are in league play. My short term goal is to break 14 this season.

LOL! You really hate those sticky threads don't you, I like your idea of just bumping it whenever there isn't any activity.

Okay, I'll follow that lead:

1)18 (practice)
2)15 (ran 14, didn't break the pack with the 15th shot)
3)15 (same as above)

I'm primarily an 8-ball player, I play the occasional game of 9-ball and the VERY occasional game of 1-pocket or banks, and I've never actually played 14.1 against another person. I like to use 14.1 as a practice drill, to work on my pattern planning and my cluster control for 8-ball, and a drill I like to do is set up a break shot, hit the shot and break the pack gently to leave some clusters, and see if I can run them all off the table (hence the 15-ball runs). Once I decided to try to leave a break ball and continue into the next rack, and achieved my highly-coveted 18 ball personal best. I would like to take up competitive 14.1; I think I could be very strong for a beginner if I worked on some common safety shots first (like the safety break). Maybe if I get tired of my 8-ball league I'll take a season off and do a season of straight instead. If only my girlfriend would put up with me playing leagues two nights a week
