2006 AZ Straight Pool Challenge

We have a lot of enthusiasm here in Maryland for straight pool. We're half way through a 40 person high caliber event this weekend. See the thread here:

By the way, since this a thread and can wander a bit...I actually grew up in St. Thomas! I learned to play pool around 1979 in Frenchtown at a place called "The Last Pocket" or maybe "The Side Pocket". Probably long gone now. I played my first tournament ever at Slipaways in Red Hook. It was a single race to 1 in 8 ball and I lost to the tournament favorite from Frenchtown.

Hot D__n! The Side Pocket is where I learned to play pool! I used to play at the American Legion as a young kid in the 70's, and I played some in college. When I came back home to St. Thomas in '84 the Side Pocket is where I first got in action. Guys like Mike Fuertes (my first teacher) Thomas, Wade Canton, Calvin (Nutie) Hodge and them used to take my money every day back in those days! Unfortunately, the pool scene is nowhere near like how it was in those days. As you may remember, the pool economy in those days was healthy enough that there were guys who really didn't have to work! Those days are long gone, and the overall level of play has declined, although we do have a handful of very fine players coming up. As if in tune with the times, the Side Pocket burned down in 1987 or '88, and Frankie chose not to run it as a pool hall when it was rebuilt. It is the site of a pony parlor now.

A few of us are struggling to keep the true spirit of the game, as opposed to the bar room nonsense, alive on St. Thomas.

Anyway, enough rambling and reminiscing! Good to speak to another player who knows St. Thomas. Take it easy!

P.S.--By the way, I gotta tell you--Slip Away was where we would go late at night to hustle the statesiders after playing hard against each other all afternoon and evening.

I have always highly valued opinions from the One who is a great player and a magnificent thinker. It's a so-so decision, but I think I have to agree with the One here. I'm sorry, I know you're devastated, but you know the One is the ONE and we have to respect him.

I'm going to have to side with Mikko on this one. You are sort of like that second guy to scale Mount Everest, the second guy to run a 4 minute mile (oops, I actually know who that was...bad example), the second guy to marry Elizabeth Taylor, the second guy to set foot on the moon, the guy in the stall next to Jesus....well, you catch my drift.

Why didn't you just run one more ball??? How hard could making one ball be??? Oh wait....you guys are talking about 74 IN A ROW??...jeez that's good....please disregard this post.
 
SJM SJM ....well its funny as I was editing the 1st post I saw my dilema, but since MJ's was in competition and unfinished I thought he deserved it! :D (of course I chose to list them alphabetically ;)

Just goes to show that mayb "A Aardvark" would be an excellent forum name. ;)
 
Craig... it doesn't affect my standing that much but you can amend my entry to include the 53 I had on Aug 19th.

Only 40 or so days remaining this year !! I see ppl have made an effort to get on the list during spring-time, but it seems they lack the final sprint towards the goal line. Come on guys and gals, go shoot a few racks of 14.1 and improve your score !!! At least I'm so modern that I prefer the 80's and 90's over 70's... :rolleyes: :D Well, going to try anyway... too many good players panting down my neck when looking at the table of honour... ;)
 
Just a quick post to keep the thread up on top. What's going on? No one's running any balls these days? (God knows I'm not. I'm in a little straight pool slump these days--haven't run a 50 since my last post on the thread.) Anyway, keep playing straights, you guys. It's guaranteed to improve your other games.

Well, it hardly seems worth mentioning, but I did run a 45 about 2 weeks ago - this totally shatters my previous record of 44.:) :)

Fifty, here I come.

I ran my high of 46 in my basement and since then I had new rails, cloth and
4 1/4 " pockets put in. Haven't got in the 30s since. In leagues, seem to be stuck in the occasional high 20s rut. Seems I always do something to f@#* up the next break shot. But I will not give up hope.
