2007 AZ Straight Pool Challenge!

List updated, sorry for delay back in the real world of work now sadly! :(

Doesn't look like I'll hit another ball in anger until the new year either!

Congrats too all on new high runs, great numbers

Hey Craig... got my new contact prescription and immediately ran a 134 :).

Looking forward to being able to see again! Hope all is well, sir.

Nice going, Steve.

Nice run for Steve.

I just improved my high run to 64 today; ended by jawing out a nearly impossible break shot (got the pack open though). It was in a game to 75; I started down 21-0, but rallied when I finally got to the table. I was desperately hoping to run out the game; that would definitely have been a first.

Yikes! So much for our 57 deadlock! I hope to break my 57 soon. Our league started tonight and I muddled my way to a win posting a mere 30 on the way. Ed Deska is in fine form with a 55 and out in his match.

Andy,
My game is definitely improving by leaps and bounds; advice from Steve Lipsky and Ed Deska has helped significantly - you may blame Ed for losing a place on the AZB list.

I'm taking a long weekend trip to Mark Wilson's Billiard Bullpen near St. Louis; so I'll get a few days to play on some tables with generous pockets (none like that available here in Indy). I'm hoping I have time to make an attempt on a high run while I'm there....my goal for the year is to stay ahead of "alinco" (I'm thinking John Schmidt's 293 mark may be a bit out of my reach:) :) ).

update u star!

I notice you pipped sjm by 1, I wonder if that was your real target? ;)

TheVerySlimDigit,
WOW!!! I haven't actually looked at the list (not that it is not a vitally important list of critcal significance to the success of modern civilization). I guess this just proves that high run for a single year is not a true indication of relative skill level.

Since the WPBA Peoria tournament was cancelled (sjm always travelled out for it as a guest of one of the players), I very much miss my yearly match-up with him (and the attendant lesson). Perhaps he'll be alarmed by this development and come back to Indy for a re-match.

Great run Don! I'm really happy for you!

Blackjack,

Did you get a new prescription? Have you had a chance to play? Wondering if you've run any 700s since yesterday :p !

Steve,
Thanks; but really it could have been better. The first 3 1/2 racks really had no super tough shots; I worked through the balls fairly easily with little risk. At 50 I broke the balls very well (I had the perfect break shot with close position), and the balls spread out nicely. I had only a little trouble - a combo on the foot rail (of the type that is off angle and missable, I think most would prefer to break it apart than shoot it - I ended up shooting it and making it), a "set of twins" in the rack (those 2 balls right next to each other that don't go anywhere but in the far head rail corners), and NO break shot.

Because my previous high was 57 I abandoned my usual strategy of taking care of trouble first, then manufacturing a break ball. I just pocketed the open balls (8 or 9 of them), then shot the combo, then shot one of the twins. The best that I could end up with was a below the rack breaker that required a lot of draw to even hit the pack (with whitey within a half inch of the rail - diagrammed below). Oddly enough I jawed the breakshot, clipped the corner ball and got a shockingly excellent spread (for my table, where the pack does not open easily - but of course I used the Breedlove "Flamethrower" stroke for the shot - it makes a lot of noise:) ). I almost wish I would have missed it badly (as I expected). If I hadn't needed the open balls to beat my high run, I would have played that rack VERY differently.

Hell, I'm starting to think that 100 might even be possible (assuming I take care of my health, and can live another 40 or 50 years).

Very impressive.

You have me beat for the year, but I am still going to try and catch you!

High Run

I was able to best my high run of 2007 with a whopping 38 last night. The 20s and 30s are coming more frequently but I'm afraid I won't be getting into Betmore territory anytime soon.

so far...

Greetings to all You straight pool lovers!

I fell in love with the game about 15 years ago. I've been struggling with it though, ever since I had an almost mystic experience running 101 after only three years of pool - ending a race to a 100 in the second inning.

I'm probably the worst player to ever have done this...but I hope I'll prove to be worth it some day...;)

I started playing like once a week this year after a couple of years with little pool in mind. So far, I settled for 40 a few weeks ago - first inning, but lost the match...:(

My goal is to reach fifty by the end of the year, improve on consistency and maybe get close to century next year.
So I'll jump in at 40 - hope there's more to come...
