2007 AZ Straight Pool Challenge!

Linda, are serious? If not... ya got me..

Rack up 14 balls in the rack. Set up a straight pool break by placing the loose OB and CB anywhere you like to execute the break shot. Shoot until you miss tally up your score.

Yes, I was serious.....ly having a blonde moment. :D :o Hey, I have only played straight pool 4 times!! (Once was in a tournament at the 211 that I won, lol.)

OK, I like the BIH break shot. ;)

I Can Lurk No Longer

Great run Criag!! I've been lurking on AZ many times daily for the past five years. While it has kept me well informed and at times greatly amused, I have rarely felt the need to post my two cents. The time has come to emerge from the shadows. The straight pool high run challenge has peaked my interest. Although I have only tried to practice 14.1 on a few occasions, this challenge may be just the thing to get my head back into the game. Your 121 is not only a great achievment, but it is now my target to exceed over the next year. I 'll keep you updated.
Take it easy, David

Hi Dave,

Its good to hear from u again, I was wondering if you had rode off into the sunset of fatherhood and hung up your cue! I will hopefully be in Vegas for the BCA and VNEA after missing it last year, will u be there?

If not good luck on the straight pool, it truly is the purest form of billiards.

As much as I think 100 is a great run I think 200 really seperates the boys from the girls so to speak, I hope I can find the time to break it this year.

Good luck mate

Unforturnately, I haven't been playing on any leagues, so the BCA and VNEA are out for me. I will be at Valley Forge for the Billiards Expo in March.

Good luck in Vegas!!

One question about this. Are you guys running these balls on your own or are you playing against someone when you do it. I don't practice racks by myself very often other than to practice my break shots. My runs will be done during game situations. Is that OK?
MULLY

I was playing a race to 125 against one of my regular customers. The 87 was followed by an unfinsihed 38.

Finally got around to playing some last night, it was my first time playing straight pool in at least a year and probably only my third or fourth time ever playing. With that being said I managed to make a high run of 35 balls, it may not be much but it's a high run for me and I hope to improve on it soon, maybe even today if I can ever log off of AZ LOL!

My goal for the short term is to break the half century mark, it won't be easy but I'm sure I can do it if I keep practicing.

Added updates, good to see so many already taking part. I'm sure this year will be more popular than last and I hope everyone breaks their own PB.

133 - January 13 - after a few months of playing horribly, something kicked me into gear this past week. I'm waiting for John Schmidt, Thorsten, Danny, or Ginky to blast a 150+ run. Good luck to everybody this year.

Very Nice Run

Blackjack,
I can only hope the same something is contagious for the rest of us.

Great run BJ!

Added some of the runs from DCC event (AZ members only of course)

Congrats to mworkman on his new high run of 63 and to TheOne of 121. Anytime anyone breaks their high run, I believe they deserve a pat on the back. :D

Thanks PoolFool. I actually broke my high run again and hit 65 on Friday. In this past week I shot a 56, 63 and a 65. I believe this is mostly due to the new cloth I put on. Really fast and I dont have to hit clusters hard to separate them.

Hate to change the subject but did you go to siminos 760 or similar speed cloth?

I went with Tour Ed. 3030 from Championship. Plays awsome, at least as good as simonis in my opinion.

My high run is 13. :(
Im such crap. Lol. I'm starting to really get into the game now, though...
Only been playing for a little while...

I hear all these terms like "key balls" and I dunno what's goin' on...I don't know how to setup break balls or nothin', so I have very little hope for getting past whatever rack I'm on at the moment...and no one I know plays any straight pool! I guess I gotta get a book or somethin'....

14.1 Continuous...great game......it's just that "Continuous" part that gets me...LOL :p

Great thread, though! :D

For me personally, that's probably where the good runs will come from. It amazing how "I need to run these two racks to win the match" translates to a focus disciplined run, as opposed to being sloppy in the first rack of practice because you can re-rack and restart. That's how I did my first Jan run of 43, the 30 and out and then I missed the key ball over the pocket by slow rolling it to hold for the perfect break shot angle to blast into the 50s when perfect wasn't needed!

That list looks tough already. Craig started the year with a very nice run, let's see if you can improve to figures starting with 2... ;)

I haven't been practising much lately, like once a month, but trying to get myself together and play some 14.1. Good way to get into a good rhythm. Hmm, actually I already played some 14.1 and on the first inning made 40-something but that doesn't count, because I can't remember it exactly. And because I'm such a vain person and won't submit under half-centuries...

Hey, I've been playing pretty seriously for 3 years & my high run is 15 (made the break shot, but just missed the rack ... grrrrrrrr) !! I have my own table & practice at least a little every day ... it just boggles my mind some of the scores these guys put together in straight pool. Its like anything else, some people have aptitude for certain things - I'm a much better cabinetmaker & guitar player than pool player, but I do enjoy pool (although I must say its the only sport that I've ever really struggled with ... it is very frustrating to me, but somehow very enjoyable) ...

Today's run

Today I ran 58 on brand new siminos 860 tournament blue cloth.

The 860 tournament blue cloth is noticeably faster (15 to 20%) than the 860 standard green. The torney blue spreads open the balls better, however it caused me to get out of shape a few times.

Hal
