2007 AZ Straight Pool Challenge!

Thanks Craig,

This was my goal for the year so I’m hoping I can just relax and build on it now that the monkey is off my back. With the way the table opened up in the last rack, I thought 60 or more was within reach. Unfortunately I got a funny roll after a secondary breakout, leaving just one tough shot that I missed. I’ll chalk it up to experience!

Vinny

Don't relax, set a new goal and work towards that. Otherwise you'll end up wasting a year being non-chalant.

Exactly what I was thinking, you can't just take the rest of the year off because you reached your goal!

Thanks guys. Absolutely I agree and will continue to push myself. I just thought, having reached my goal, that number won’t loom so large now. I can just relax while playing and run the balls the way they should be run. I know it is a big no-no but I know I let my goal dictate my shot selection during this last run. I made sure that I could cinch 50, but in the end I probably shortened my run. I’m hoping now I can play without the pressure of reaching a certain number.

During challenging times, I found my stroke ....

and ran 71 today.

The next month will be somewhat difficult for me to play or to concentrate because my wife is going to be in the Cleveland Clinic for at least the next 2 1/2 weeks.

Regards,
Hal

Just a bump so this doesn't get lost.

If I make it out tonight (plan too) I'm going to give this a shot.I have never tried it (but the videos I've found here explain it pretty well) and I'm curious as hell as to what my high might be....

lots of new runs, marop, hal2 and vin have all improved their bestest! :p

Also added an average per user run stat, at the end of last year this was 86.63!

Straight Pool Fever

Well, I've been sick the past few days and I watched a group of 5 VHS tapes I got from Accustats a while back and it's got me really wanting to play some 14.1 so assuming I don't start feeling worse I think I might head to the hall and try to improve on my paltry 16, and perhaps even break my PR of 30...lol. After watching all of those runs of 100+ balls I should be able to run 50 or 60 right?! I mean hell, if Efren Reyes, Ralph Souquet and Oliver Ortmann can run 120 or more I can certainly run 50...lol.  :D :D

high run

I was able to extend my 2007 number to 30 yesterday. Then I messed up the 13th ball, easy shot on the bottom rail, left it hanging with perfect position for the side shot 14th ball and side of the rack break shot. :(
Oh, well.

Put me down for a weak handed 16 yesterday to get started with a January score that I hope to improve upon. My high run strong handed was 88 a long time ago, and 78 alternating hands each shot. Weak handed it's around 40. Straight pool is a great game that I haven't played nearly enough.

I also ran one rack of 15 ball ghost weak handed with ball in hand after the break. (not the first break though lol!) Anybody want to start a thead similar to this one for rotation games?

Craig, I managed to sneak in a race to 150 tonight and ran 63 along the way.

Yours most sincerely, SJM

TheThirteenthofaBaker'sDozen,
Put me down for a 57.

Not much compared to most; but DANG, I've been hoping that 50 would come along. It's the first time I've ever just made a serious attempt in practice (I usually just count during competition).

Jim Rempe said that when he is practicing straight pool, he just "rains hundreds." My goal is now to "rain 40's and 50's" (of course some places in the desert it only rains twice a century, but hey, you can't be too picky).

Well done, sir. Hoping to challenge that run soon as I get more table time :)

Great shooting, Willie. Very proud of you.

I'm waiting for you, Mikko. Thanks for the kind words.

WBM and SJM nice runs for both of you. That's getting the year started off right. Me, well I have had little opportunity to play 14-1 but I did squeak out a low 30 something in a short practice session. Pretty sad but I've not had the time to improve on it.

Willie:

Ability helps, but tenacity is what achieves most goals. Congratulations.

TheSlimDigit,
I'm not so sure. I will say though that I had no real tough shots in 57 balls. The last rack was just evil; several tough clusters to get to. I successfully got the clusters apart but could not get a breakshot; I just shot off the last ball and opened up the champagne.

My shotmaking has improved a lot the past few weeks; I'm hopeful that if I keep working on my stroke (lots of room for improvement) I can collect an extra brew from you (I believe right now I owe you one, and you owe me one) before next year. I think if I could play on a loose table with new cloth I could possibly get to 75 before next year (of course I also thought Saddam was a lock to win the Nobel Peace Prize).
