BMPAP 2009 World Team Challenge-Suggestions

The BMPAP is planning to put together a World Team Challenge as one of our events for 2009. We're thinking of having 4 teams fight it out. The teams we're considering are USA, Europe, Taiwan and the Philippines. Each team will be composed of 8 players and this event will run for 5 days.

We would like to hear of your suggestions for format of matches and team composition. Entry fee is $2,000 per player or $16,000 per team with us adding $88,000 to the prize fund. 1st = $80,000 2nd = $40,000 3rd & 4th = $16,000 each

Hotel accomodations will be provided.

Hi bandido,

This sounds REALLY different and exciting! The prize money looks good and if it takes off it could perhaps become a major event one day.

As far as format, I think a round robin between two teams at a time, is the only way to be truly a "Team Challenge". Every team challenges each other once and everyone must play their match regardless how many wins (or loses) the team has, because racks won to racks lost matter in placing/prize money.

I don't know but it sounds like 5 days is long enough to accomplish this. As a fan, I know I would want to see everyone on each team showcase their talents, and play everyone else in the tournament at least once. But that may be asking too much.

Good luck with the tourney....and what would the dates be? Tickets to the PI from Hawaii are really cheap...lol! It costs less to go there than to LA!!!

Looking foward to it happening,
Phoebe

I hope they include all games and not just 9ball like the Mosconi cup. If only one game has to be employed then I think 10ball would be best.

I always find such tournaments interesting, good luck with this. Some questions/comments:

Would it be a Taiwan team or a China team? Or both?

How many players per team? (I've seen some other "World Team" tournaments in the past, sometimes with 2, 4 or more per team.)

Would they play doubles? And if so regular or Scotch doubles? (I can't STAND watching Scotch doubles for some reason.)

Men only, or mixed? Mixed doubles would make for interesting play IMHO.

First of all, I commend the BMPAP for providing hotel accomodations.

I would like to see each team is required to consist of at least one female player.

Then each member of the team will play every other members of all the other teams, race to 3 (talk about pressures and everything counts here). Each team would have played 576 games total in the elimination round (3x8x3x8=576). This is a lot of games.

The top two teams with the most wins advance. In case there is a tie, then head-to-head match up scores will be determined to see who advanced. In the rare case of a tie in the head-to-head match up, BnR's are used to determined who advanced.

In the finals, each member plays all the other members of the other team 5 games each. Whichever team has more total wins is the Champion. That would be 320 games played between both teams. In case there is a tie of 160-160, then there is a shoot out. 3 players from each team play 3 players from the other team, 1 game each.

Is this complicated enough? Or is it too long?

When I first read the original post I thought "No way it fly with U.S. players" The fact that the players get their entry back is interesting though and may be the factor that makes it possible.

Just a thought.

If i am not wrong, taiwan has done this before and has been for a number of years?

Maybe you can sought out the organizers there for some opinion.

Then with 2 of Asia pool power house working together we could slowly make things happen. Maybe make it an official event in place of the current world cup pool that plays a scotch doubles format which i find it quite silly.

Who knows sparks may fly! People like you are in the position to make a difference. I truly hope that something great will come out of it.

To make it a real team event, each team should be able to pick whom they want to send to play for whichever game. When all the players just plays everybody else it loses it's team concept for me. Also maybe it's possible they have a ring game included in the event where they play for top points.

I'm floored by the cooperation and intelligence put forth in your replies. Have to commend the AzB Community for keeping this thread looking to be very productive for the sake of pool and the brother/sisterhood that such a forum exists for. I thank you all.

All the suggestions are really worth utmost consideration and are valuable to us in order to come up with the best format for such an undertaking.
We're headed for something BIG here!!!!

Prize Money Pay-out structure was intentionally set-up so that the bottom 2 teams still get their entry fees back and, as it is right now, they will just be out of their airfare and "mad" vacation money. But if our other plans push through all th teams will benefit financially much more than just the prize money.

How, you ask? What if our marketing dept. can approach and convince a Philippine-based US corp. to embark on an ad program with the members of the US Team that have gained name recognition here in the Philippines because of this event? How about Siemens or Zuellig or BMW or Nokia for Team Europe? Just one idea that we're exploring.

NIce group Roy, but I think Europe should have Jasmin on their roster. She has proven herself to be one of the top players (both among men and women) and would deserve to be on the team.

I think, since there are USA and Europe, why not have Asia. Combine Taiwan with other Asian cities. Or another one called Asia.

Here's the reasoning. The event is happening here in the Philippines and in order to get sponsors for the event we need to have a purely Filipino team. There is political friction between Taiwan and China so that's going to be quite a trick to get them together in the same team, too.

Not to worry, this is just a pilot project to "feel the waters". A prelude to a per country "World Team Challenge". Please work with us here so that we'll all get somewhere.

I like Phoebe's suggestion, a round robin with each country playing the other three. Each Match-Up would consist of eight matches, and every player would play once. The team Captains could take turns nominating players and the opposing Captain would pick one of his players, until all sixteen players were matched up. A perfect score in each Match-Up is 8-0, and it could end in a tie, 4-4. There are a total of 48 matches this way. It could be played on two tables in four days.

At the end of the 48 matches (each team plays 24 matches total), the winning team is determined by the best record overall. In case of a tie, the tiebreaker would be determined by which team won in their Match-Up. If they tied 4-4, then there could be a one match playoff, where each Captain picks one player.

I think Ten ball is the best game for this, maybe each match a Race to Nine.

I'd like to see you pay 80K, 40K, 24K and 16K. I know this means a few dollars more added, but that way every position is important. They will still be battling for third and fourth right down to the wire. And that can make a difference on who wins as well. Think about it.

Philippine team can stay, you can even have two. You have have too many world class players. It's just the Team Taiwan, I don't think they can beat any two Philippine teams. That's why I said you can add to them another Asian, if not Chinese then Vietnamese or Japanese players. But whatever your plans are, surely this will be a hit, a big big hit. Hope you can put it live on the internet.

Webstreaming is a MUST as we do want everyone to be a part of this. We have the technology available so we best use it.
