Good time.

Sounds like you had a great time afterwards with Danny and at Amsterdam.

I had a few brews at the hotel and then up at 5:30 to fly into Chicago and go to work. Reality sometimes sucks,

Hmmm. this picture looks mighty familiar...LOL

2010 worlds just ended and i am already jonesing in anticipation for 2011. this may be the longest 10 months ever !!!

It might be very long. The WPA has changed the minimum for added money to $75,000 for any world championship.

One of the sponsors was talking to me about that. They are making it damn near impossible to get it sanctioned.

All we can do is hope that the miracle happens again for the sixth year in a row. 14.1 lives!

The WPA should add the 75000$ themselves or let someone else do the tournament with less money. I understand a certain level of "quality" has to be achieved... but what's better, no tournament or a tournament with less added money?
I can't avoid thinking that all organizations / federations / etc. create problems rather than solve them.

As a player, what WPA contributions have you seen? Are there any other tournaments out there lobbying to be the 14.1 World Straight Pool Championship?

Since last year's tournament was not sanctioned, Stephan Cohen is not acknowledge on their website.

That amount for a world championship is not unreasonable. I think it has to make economic sense for top players from all over the world to come.

The WPA does not do tournaments. It provides a framework in which international tournaments can be held. All the tournaments (except maybe the Juniors?) are run by independent promoters. So far as I know, the WPA budget is less than $100,000 per year.

Well, it is certainly unreasonable if it renders events nonviable. I still think that WPA should guarantee there is a world event in each discipline every year even if the prize money is not a certain amount. I agree that top players should be able to go, but the lack of money, sponsorship and transparency is a constant in this sport. Maybe building a proper structure to aid in the funding of the top players should be a prime target, rather than specifying an amount of added prize money, waiting for someone to organize it and taking a cut out of it.

This is of course just my uninformed and respectful opinion.

I have a funny story for you.

I was playing a straight pool league match, Amsterdam Billiards, last Monday night. I've been on a really bad run, tough division, stroke going through some serious issues... but that night I was well ahead for the first time in ages.

But my opponent, a really strong player, is coming back hard at me. It's getting pretty tense.

And then into the club there blows this crowd of guys like a bunch of old leaves. They're drunk, they're excited, they're noisy... And then, having picked up some more drinks, they decide to take up position not at the bar but at the table RIGHT NEXT TO ME.

And they're getting noisier and more exuberant, and my match is getting more and more tense.

I'm trying to ignore them but it's hard. I hear some of what they're saying and realize they've just blown in from the World Championship. And there's this one guy who's noisier and louder than all the rest put together. And part of me is fuming, and part of me wants to go over and scream at this guy to shut up, and I'm getting really cross as my match gets closer and closer...

And then I look a bit closer at this guy...

A couple of hours earlier, I'd just read a post on here about a guy who only just picked up a cue a year ago after years away from the game. And then he gets a call from Pat Fleming and he's going to be playing in the World Championship. And then he's out again, crestfallen, his spot has vanished. And then he's back in and he's playing all his heroes in the TOUGHEST group no less. And he doesn't win, of course, but he has just the best time ever. And it was like a pool fairytale. And that story had really made me smile a few hours back, and really made me look forward to my league match that night. Maybe it even spurred me on to play better than I had done in a long time.

And I look at this guy... and I remember the picture that accompanied the post I'd just read... And then I realize... the loud exuberant guy at the table next to me is eddie the lock. The guy who's post I'd enjoyed so much, of course.

And then I had to laugh. And I couldn't say anything. And I went on and won the match.

But I swear, if I hadn't read that post, things could have got heated.

So who says these forums do nothing but spread discord and fighting?

Congratulations, Eddie, on your fairytale appearance at the Worlds. And I swear, next time you're having too much fun at the table next to me while I play a league match, it's gonna have to turn ugly, muchacho.

Somehow I knew this story was gonna be about Eddie when I got half way through the read.

Eddie is one of the kindest men I know, not only does he have a big mouth but an even bigger heart !

Now where's my cheesesteak Eddie !!!

Good story. I enjoyed reading it. I too hate Drunks with loud mouths.
So, I know what you were feeling. Reading Steve's comments about the guy. I am sure he is a good person and just over did it that night celebrating his experience at the World's. I just wish people would think of other people around them when their out to make noise & act foolishly.
That kind of stuff really throws me off my game and makes me not even want to play. One of the big reasons why I never hung out in bars & pool rooms growing up.

Hey, Straight Man,

Sorry if I gave the wrong idea. (Did I?) I thought my story made it pretty clear I thought that this was a one-off. The guy just lived the dream. And when I realized that, I had zero resentment. Let him have some fun after the fairytale pool week, I thought.

I did make that clear, right? That's why I called it a 'funny story' and not a 'makes me sick to my guts story'.

Maybe that drunk guy'll be me one day.
