Has anyone seen that the SBE dates have changed from March 15 - 18
to March 8 - 11 2012.
If you have made reservations you may want to get them changed.
Also the location has changed.

Thank you!

I had made my reservations and will need to change them. One of the things I really liked was that the hotel was part of the convention center. It doesn't look like the new facility has a connected hotel. Anyone know the best place to stay now?

Without a hotel within walking distance the experience will not be as good. Many of us travel with others. It was always nice to be able to stay and walk to and from our rooms whenever we wanted. Some would stay up all night playing, others would go back to the room and rest when they wanted.

Hopefully Hopkins will find a place with reasonable hotel rates connected to an exhibition area.

I think this move will affect attendance and participation.

Is the new place near the old one?

Yes, the new place is less than 6 miles down the road.... You can see a map and more info at this link:

Also, to see some details about the venue itself, here is their website:

So... hello everyone, I am here to try and help address any questions or concerns you may have regarding the 2012 SBX.

Yes, it is true, the event will be moving to the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center at Oaks - the venue is over twice the size and all on one floor! And the dates have changed slightly, the event will be March 8-11, 2012.

We can feature even more playing tables, more vendors, and an even bigger pro event. We are very excited about this move, and it should be a great 20th Anniversary event!

I will start a thread very soon with an "official" press release, but in the meantime I will try to address any questions here...

Allen, it's nice for you to come on this forum to help answer some questions.

The lodging (hotels), getting to and from the venue site is what's going to be a stumbling block for some. :frown:

Some say most of the hotels in the area are already booked, which I find hard to believe since we're in July 2011 and the event happens in March 2012. :p

The bigger parking lot, however, is going to be very nice for all attendees. That's very cool!

Also, having everything on one floor is great for us old-timers who can't walk or stand for long periods of time. :embarrassed2:

So are you thinking about increasing the 64-player field in the pro event? You always fill up, so that's a bonus for those who end up on the waiting list each year. ;)

Will people be able to gamble freely on the action table area? I gotta ask the question. :D

Those are a few preliminary thoughts at this juncture. Thanks for taking the time to address our concerns, and best wishes on the 2012 SBE!

Since hotel rooms are not connected to the expo center, what is being done for vendors with significant inventory (mainly cues that were carried to their rooms each evening)?

Thanks! I wish I could be here more often :) I read up quite a bit, just don't post quite as often...

Yes, this is unfortunate. However, people drive to and from work everyday, and the hotels are all within a very close radius. The facility has plans to build a hotel in the next year or two, as everyone in the region is adjusting to the changes. There is a Hampton Inn less than a mile away, I expect that place to be quite crowded. My dad is meeting with them today to discuss things. Furthermore, we are working on plans to provide shuttle services for vistors. EDIT: Dad literally just called me, the facility has just told him that their hotel will be built and ready for 2013. :)

Thanks, it should be cool. And there will be a parking lot immediately adjacent to the facility reserved just for vendors.

Yes, one floor should be awesome. And yes, we can now fit 16 pro tables, so we can open this event up to a larger field.

Umm, well, gambling is illegal, so we cannot condone this. As usual, we will post some signs around the facility to deter people from this...
There will, however, be more practice tables with plenty of seating around them, so visitors can watch their favorite players practice.

And even better, we will now have an additional arena with 32 tables just for daily turbo tournaments of varying buy-in levels.

Those are a few preliminary thoughts at this juncture. Thanks for taking the time to address our concerns, and best wishes on the 2012 SBE!

You're quite welcome, glad I can help. And glad so many players and fans enjoy coming to our little event :)

Well, the entire exhibitor area can be shut down and locked up overnight. The facility has separate Halls, joined by large garage-bay type doors. These doors will be open all day to allow traffic to flow freely around the floor.

At night, the doors will be shut and the entire exhibitor area will be locked up. At this time, a separate entrance will be opened allowing players in and out of the playing area all night long.

We are also considering some type of cue storage area, with security. This could also be used for some vendors possibly. And there are several "meeting rooms" around the Expo Center, maybe we could consider using one of these as some type of overnight security for vendors.

Will there be a charge for the parking?

Hopefully the food and drink vendors will supply more variety and still be reasonable.

The turbo tournaments sound interesting.

No, there will be no charge for parking, and there never has been.

I hope there is a better variety of food as well, we do not ever have any control over the food options available at the venues. That seems to remain under the control of the venue.

I do know they have a decent looking concession area, and there is also a sports bar type facility connected to the Expo floor.

Think it's great! I've been going for the last 8 years and haven't stayed at the hotel at the event. Have always stayed at one of the hotels in the area.
Counting the days now! Looking forward to seeing everyone again. Hopefully the weather will be accommodating, no Snow please.

Any idea what size the hotel is going to be? I can only assume that it will not have the same amount of rooms as the Scanticon & The Radisson combined. My guess would be that rooms will be even tougher to get than they are now and that's saying something! Can we reserve now for 2013? :o

Thanks "Jr"

Everyone should get the word out now to make things smoother. I posted Facebook with this thread... hope others do as well.

Due to the unique nature of SBE, you have throngs of visitors staying at the convention center until 6AM, until they are kicked out by the cleaning crew. The local poolhall is smart enough to stay open 24 hours during the event days to capture additional business.

The Valley Forge concessionaire closes down around midnight, irregardless if there is line of customers. It may be especially profitable for the concessionaire to stay open later, especially with the captive audience and knowing nearby food venues are closed.

Glad to see all the updates..............
Do you have the phone number for the Hampton Inn that's close ? Want to make sure to make a reservation at the closest one.

Driving direction information

From the Expo Center's Site:

GPS USERS

We apologize for any confusion caused by the inability of many GPS and mobile apps to find the Expo Center by its address: 100 Station Avenue in Oaks, PA. We have submitted this to the U.S. Postal Service and GPS manufacturers and it functions properly on some, but not all systems. The best way to find us is to use this address:

1601 Egypt Road Phoenixville, PA 19460 (Upper Providence Township).

This will take you to the Oaks Deli and Pizzeria, from which you can follow signs to the Expo Center.
