The 2012 US Open is nearing the final stages and the Mosconi Cup points are becoming more clear. At this point Stevie Moore looks to have the final position with 208 points, but he will most likely lose his position by one of the US players still in the tournament.

Method

Exciting! A lot of people with some extra motivation!

I wish there were a better method of choosing the team. Arbitrarily choosing certain stats to determine who plays is tricky.

In 1986-87, I had the best season of any player in my home town. But if I would have been asked to choose an All-Star team, I would have placed myself no higher than sixth man.

How about a method that uses points earned, plus a vote among pro players and a vote among fans?

Im a big Dennis Hatch fan but him now showing up at the open kind of makes me not want him on the team. Has he been playing that much lately?? My 5 are Shane, Dechaine, Johnny, Shuff, Moore.

They did an online vote a couple years ago to pick a couple of the players. The problem with that is you have the world picking the players for the US.

I think a good solution would be points for the top 4 and then 1 captain's pick. Same as the Ryder cup works.

Donny...It's not a popularity contest...it's a "world class" event. Points earned competing in sanctioned events is the correct way to determine it. The pros would only vote for themselves, or their "buddies"...and most fans aren't qualified enough (don't know the players well enough) to make a vote that represents the skills of the players. jmo

No wonder this sport is dying.

CJ.. the avatar with the hat.

Hide it.

Looks like the next step is leather chaps and a small whip.

Just sayin'

Does it make you feel funny inside? :groucho:

You did some some purty looking long hair back in the day...

Do you like to watch movies about gladiators?

Grats on the pick for captain BTW! It's great that you are a big contributor to the forums, you and M.D. are really the one ones from the players that are on here. Despite funny little hats.

Well looks like no one passed Moore to get the final spot. So by my calculation it looks like these are the top 5. Assuming they go by points then these guys will be representing the US.

SVB (416)
Dechaine (328)
Shuff (231)
Hatch (230)
Moore (208)

Only the top 2 are automatic, the other 3 are picked by matchroom. Out of those 3 they will probably only take Hatch using the other 2 spots for vets like Archer, Morris, Deuel or Strickland.

Hey how come Jose Parica does not get considered for the Mosconi team. As far as I know, Jose now holds a US passport. Even in Jose's prime during the mid 90s when he won the overall title in the Camel series, I don't recall him ever being considered for the mosconi cup. In other sports, the US allows naturalized citizens to represent the country in international competition. Is pool an exception??

No offense here but Jose Parica or even Sambajon (another naturalized citizen) are way better than most of the names being considered for this year's team except for Svb, dechaine and morris.

OK Matchroom

Well all the Europeans are out of the Open and SVB is the only US player in and he is already a Mosconi lock. So Luke when do you announce the teams?

I'm going to root for the US 100% but honestly if they take the top 5 in points standings we have no chance. No disrespect to the bottom 3 of the 5 but they really can't hang with the Europeans IMO. Johnny Archer, Oscar Dominguez, and Rodney Morris is who I think need to be the other 3 for us to have a chance. The Europeans are really strong as a team and it's going to take some great play and some great coaching by the Americans to have a chance. I think CJ will do a great job and pick the right matchups to put us in a good position but I think talent wise the Euros have an edge right now. Like I said I'm rooting for USA but it's my opinion we have our work cut out for us to bring home the Mosconi Cup.
