this field should DECIMATE the Chinese.

total destruction

Alex runs centuries on a snooker table, has played snooker in the uk, and has won multiple canadian national titles, i.e....he is the BEST snooker player in this country and it's not close

Peach, Appleton, Boyes, Potts, Hendry, Melling ALL have tons of high level experience in snooker and /or uk pool

and Dennis when on just shoots INSANE

now add in all the combined world pool championships between the non chinese

we're gonna see how different/hard this game really is

Good thing for them thier not playing snooker

Yeah I agree. The tables play nothing like snooker tables, and 8 ball is nothing like snooker. First and most importantly the best 8 ball players regardless of the tables they play on has the upper hand. And Gaz is the best 8 ball player in this field imo. Daz and earl both play really solid 8 ball too. Next advantage would be the UK 8 ball players. The tables play closer to how those tables play than a snooker or pool table. Again, Daz and Gaz are both past champions at the game, with Gareth being the more recent. Then there is the experience on the C8B tables actually playing the game. The Chinese are head and shoulders above everyone in experience, but Gareth also has a lot of experience on them, not only that he's won it before. Can't possibly see anyone other than him lifting the trophy. Can't wait to see this tournament.

This might be a noob question, but I've been watching Darren since 2010 and never knew why he's called Daz, can someone please enlighten me?

I could be wrong but I seem to remember "The Dazzler" hung on him as a nickname when introducing him long ago. "Darren the Dazzler Appleton." A bit long for casual conversation so I figured it got whittled down to Daz.

That's Peach-Dazzler is his NN. If you call Daz-Dazzler, he will correct you.

I disagree. I think those used to snooker or english pool tables have a huge advantage over 8 ball specialists as tables with tight pockets require an entirely different technique. Earl may be a great 8 ball player but i would surprised if he can adapt his cueing sufficiently to be competitve here.

Question for you.

I know Potts does really well in C8B, but is it because he's that good, or the rest of the field isn't?

I know Steve Davis has said he won a lot in his era, because the level of competition wasn't that great.

Think of it like this. Potts hammered melling in the inaugural C8B tournament two years ago, despite having little experience of 9 foot tables and 2.25" balls. Melling is also an E8B specialist, but has had several years to get used to the the different playing conditions.

So yes, he is that good.

I've seen Earl play pyramid, and play it fairly well. If you can play that decently then you have no issues at all with accuracy and technique. That being said he still has no chance. There are players in this field that wont know who Earl is, so wont be playing his reputation just what he has to offer on the table, which isn't as good as it used to be.

The problems the American pool specialists will face is balls down or close to the rail. They are accurate enough to make them, but I doubt they will be used to hitting the most forgiving part of the pocket. They will also be used to being able to get the cue ball in a variety of different positions hitting at firm speeds when the ball is on or close to a cushion. The tables wont allow it. UK pool players and snooker players will know this and adjust their patterns to accommodate it. Its little things like this that will cost the pool players matches, not accuracy or fundamentals. After all, although their fundamentals look awful to most snooker players there is nothing wrong with their ability to hit the white where ever they want with great consistency.

I like Gareth Potts' chances. If he plays like he did last year, I don't see anyone beating him.

it's a doable trip for top pros imo

i just googled a trip estimate to Qinhuangdao for shits and giggles

the cheaper flights to Bejing from NYC tend to avg one stop, and around seventeen hours...$1400 ish.then it's a 300km trek to Qinhuangdao presumably by air, $200 avg round trip

it's not much quicker nor cheaper from europe

so ballpark up to 24 hours just to get there jet lagged and weary as all hell

rooms in the area avg $100 or so, or so it seems and the tourney is four days

realistically, bare minimum stay would be 5 night...bare minimum imo

so maybe $2100 without food and transfers from hotel to airport

add to that $2100 accordingly for food and misc expenses and subtract for any deals you can find and maybe........you can get away with $2300ish on the absolute tightest of shoe string budgets.....I could do it frugally and comfortably for about $3000

13th place appears to pay around $2300 and there is only 24 players

so not the worst math and not the worst odds either plus the chance to to go to China (not a plus for some no doubt lol)

looks like free hotel and food might be provided which is pretty awesome (link from wpa homepage to the Jan 24 tourney)

also appears that Hendry has a VERY strong involvement as the document off that link seemingly refers all foreign players to his cell (wanna call up the greatest ever:))

so maybe as little as $1500 in total expenses while 16th place pays around $1800

not bad
