The Eleventh Annual George Fels Memorial Straight Pool Challenge at Derby City will be taking place January 24, 2016 to January 30, 2016. The qualifying attempts will take place Sunday through Wednesday.

For every $100 paid in, the player gets 12 chances. There is no limit to the number of times they can enter. They rack 14 balls and take the 15th ball in hand and cue ball in hand and see how many balls they can run . The three high runs for each of the first 4 days are paid $300, $200, and $100 respectively. The high run of the event gets an additional $1,000.00. The high runs have been as follows:

The players with the top eight runs of the four days then have a single elimination tournament. We will be filming all of the attempts and all of the matches. The qualifiers and some of the matches will be streamed by TV Mike at http://www.tvmike.tv/premium.html. It will be available under his premium tab. You will need to become a member which costs $7.99 a month but that will get you access to the live stream and much more. Usually the semis and finals are filmed by Accu-Stats, if they can be scheduled properly. A lot depends upon who our finalists are and where they are in the 9 ball event.

There is now $12,000.00 committed in added money this year, the most ever.
We would like to thank our sponsors Diamond Billiards, Simonis Cloth, Aramith, Bob Jewett, Rich Klein, Ted Antle and Stan Haines.

We will be upstairs in the large room overlooking the arena that we have been using for the last three years. Stop by and say hi. If anyone wants to volunteer to help for a while as a scorekeeper, let me know. It is a great opportunity to watch how these monsters take apart some racks.

I don't think Stalev will be at DCC, it's quite expensive to get in USA and he is not in top form. Stalev, also just open his own billiard room in Moscow, for pyramid, so he have to promote his business.

Ruslan Chinakhov told me that he is coming over with about 10 Russians, but he does not know if Stalev is coming. Stalev did not come over last year. Stepanov waited too long to apply for a visa. He is trying but it might not happen for him.

Ralf Souquet, Thorsten Hohmann, Ralph Eckert from Germany.

Niels Feijen, Nick Van den Berg, Alex Lely and a few of the younger guys from Holland.

Dennis Orcollo, Warren Kiamco, Alex Pagulayan and a bunch of others from the Phillipines.

John Schmidt will be there. Danny Harriman hopes to be there.

Have not heard back from Mika.

I think Jayson will be there. Darren Appleton was not sure.

Sweet. Its going to be awesome. I thought I saw Stalev listed on the DCC website. Had to ask.

mosconi run

Nope. We have all our money spent. 100% payout. If you would like to start a 527 fund, we would be glad to offer it.

Iwill put up the 1st. 1,000.00 dollars if anyone breaks the all time high run by Mosconi at the Derby straight pool challenge this year. The run must be recorded and part of the straight pool challenge. Gary Henry owner of Gary's Victor Billiards

What the heck -- in for a dime, in for a dollar. I'll put in $5000 under the same conditions. I figure my chance of losing that money is roughly the same as winning the PowerBall tonight. If both happen, I may bump up my contribution.

I agree that the odds are pretty slim, but I'd love to see someone make good run at it.

Hey Dennis,

one of my 14.1 League players is going to the derby. his name is Justin, i told him to stop in with you guys and say hello. i may have even convinced him to participate.

you cant miss him. he's taller than me by about 4 inches. he he's like 6'-7", and a pretty decent player. he's fairly new to 14.1, his HR is like 86 and he ran a 68 in our league. he used to do a lot of work with Dennis Hatch.

So it's an interesting exercise (for some) to figure out very roughly what the odds are. In the 10 years of the DCC 14.1 challenge the highest run is about half of 527. There are roughly 500 attempts per year. That makes running half of 526 a 1/5000 event, roughly. Running 263 and then another 263 without a miss in between is (very roughly) a 1/25,000,000 event. With 500 attempts this year, it comes down to a 1 in 50,000 chance that we will see a 527 or better.

It's probably calculations like the above that got an insurance company into trouble for Earl's million-dollar 11-rack run.

A more careful statistician would work with more accurate numbers -- the actual highest run observed is 227, not 263 -- and do more accurate calculations but it's not clear that a more accurate estimate would result.

Why hasn't large business stepped up to be a large sponsor, then get an insurance policy. Similar to how golf tournaments do a "million dollar hole in one".

If I win the Powerball, I would put $1,000,000.00 in a separate 14.1 account. The 1st player to beat Mosconi's 526 would get the money. With that incentive, I bet more people would take up 14.1 and practice.

Of course there would have to be some regulations set in place, otherwise 500 guys would jump up and say they ran 700...lol
