I hate that 3 point rule. The rule should just be “no soft breaks”

You can tell when someone is breaking hard or soft. If you’ve got someone pushing the limit and kinda soft breaking you have a ref or whatever show up and make a decision. I don’t think that would even happen though.

It’s terrible some of the awesome breaks that get considered non compliant with the 3p rule.
I generally don't like rules that require subjective judgement if there is a more objective alternative, but fairly recently there was a tournament that left the discretion to the referee about whether it was a soft break or not and I thought it worked reasonably well, better than i expected. I liked that better than the 3 point rule anyway.

both the us open and the world championship had this rule. i would like a radar gun at every table, if it works ofc.

The problem with that implementation is that you have to have a referee at the table to judge "hard enough". I think the phone app would be good enough, and in those events, the scorekeeper could run the app. Is 18MPH OK?

Bar box pool, is great because it puts cues in peoples hands.

Bar box pool is not the place to cultivate talent from.

It all starts with kids and takes 2 decades to really see it happen 100%.

Juergen Wolf teaches kids in Germany, he is a amazing person. He works his ass off, the kids can tell. So the kids apply themselves as well. Work ethic, that’s a huge problem in America (another topic)

The kids with less talent he still works with, nobody is left out. The big talents he does other things. He has a brilliant after school curiclum (as we can see Fatboy was a victim of education spending cuts in the 70’s). They are not little robots either. Happy kids with structure.

That’s the future in anything. Pool is just 1 tiny part of the puzzle. Structure, education, investing in the future-selflessly.

Getting off his soapbox🧼🧼

HIt the nail Eric :-)

Jürgen Wulf- glad to call him one of my very best friends. And one of the most impressive instructors i ever met. His ability to "communicate" with young humans is unbelievable.
The times he invited me to make some trainings camps with him to work with kids was always a pleasure. To know him is a gift- and to see him talking to young players a pleasure.

Well chosen words Eric!

yes, referee subjective measuring of the break isn't the way to go. a player with great leverage and timing can make a hard break look soft. like shane, gorst. i think 18 mph would be hard enough

18MPH might be a little high. I bet some of the gals would jump out of their shoes and not achieve 18. 16 would be hard enough and allow the player an adjustment range that works. I know it's nine ball but for example 18MPH will sometimes push the 2 head balls past the sides on a 10 ball break but 17.5 works sweet.

Even 15 might work to avoid the very soft breaks.

I’m always in contact with him, he’s a good friend and someone who has my highest respect. I’m headed to Koln sometime this spring and will go see him and the rest of the guys there. Always good fun!

That would give me a 1mph cushion. 😁
