As I watch this event, I am reminded just how much better cue-sports are without the jump shot. In snooker, great defensive play pays bigger dividends than in pool, as there's no going through the air to avoid obstructions. Similarly, position play errors are penalized more harshly in snooker than in pool. If you're playing onto a red and leave a color between the cue ball and all the reds, you're in trouble. In the end game, if you snooker yourself from the next ball, you've got a big problem. Finally, watching all the magnificent kick shots that the best cueists are able to devise is really a treat, and the many swerve shots played with precision are also something to behold.
I know the jump shot is here to stay in pool, but I'm glad the other two major cue sports, carom and snooker, are played in two dimensions, not three, for that's as it should be.
You are right, that defensive play is very important in snooker, but you have to keep in mind, that it is much easier compared to pool.
The big table and the pockets add an element of safety.
Also that snooker allows role up shots makes it a lot easier to put your opponent in a lot of trouble or play simple escape shots.
And last but not least, there is no ball in hand, so mistakes are not punished as hard as in pool.
It is kind of the same for position play.
Ok, if you snooker yourself, you can't jump to get back in line, but again the bigger table gives you more wiggle room for position play anyway.
For the modern shot makers it is not that big of a problem if they miss the position by a few centimeters, they will still make the next shot as long they can see the potting angel.
If you overrun a position in pool, there is a bigger chance to snooker yourself, because of the smaller table.
Another important factor is that the colors have fixed spots, so as soon as a player gets in, every break is more or less the same. That is the reason why we see more and more century breaks, because todays topplayers have nearly reached perfection in this standardized form of the game.
That said, it is amazing how close to perfection the top players are and how they make it look so easy.
