2022 World Snooker Championship (Apr 16th - May 2nd)

Phew......
Now I get to see one match I was hoping for, Williams vs. Bingtao

selby got selbyed. ran into another grinder, and a clutch player at that. hats off to the kid.

williams is the polar opposite of selby, all offense. will bingtao try to grind him down or step up his scoring game?

I've been up since 3am. Figured, shit, the stream is gonna start in 2 hours anyways. Might as well stay awake.
That’s a great plan! That’s how I roll as well.

Next week I’ll be in Germany so I’ll see every match. Here in Istanbul some matches are available. Then bicycle racing 🤯

if im not mistaken, this is the first tourney in many years where 4 players have a crack to take the #1 ranking with a win, Selby (now out) Robertson, Ronnie and Judd

as it stands we could see a Ronnie vs Judd/Robertson final for the championship and world 1st ranking
anybody know the last time that has happened?

Kyren get very near the top also with a win, maybe even 1st, I think snooker does 2 year rolling winnings for their rankings

At the end of this tournament Ronnie is going to have his 7th world championship and the #1 ranking which is fitting since he is the best snooker player in history and is currently the best all things considered.

Ronnie and Robertson are in the same half of the bracket.

As I watch this event, I am reminded just how much better cue-sports are without the jump shot. In snooker, great defensive play pays bigger dividends than in pool, as there's no going through the air to avoid obstructions. Similarly, position play errors are penalized more harshly in snooker than in pool. If you're playing onto a red and leave a color between the cue ball and all the reds, you're in trouble. In the end game, if you snooker yourself from the next ball, you've got a big problem. Finally, watching all the magnificent kick shots that the best cueists are able to devise is really a treat, and the many swerve shots played with precision are also something to behold.

I know the jump shot is here to stay in pool, but I'm glad the other two major cue sports, carom and snooker, are played in two dimensions, not three, for that's as it should be.

I agree with the disdain for the jumpshot. However accomplishing a good "contact" in snooker is way easier then making a good "hit" in pool games.

pro snooker in smaller tourneys and exhibitions has been played with the "hit a rail after contact" rule
I would like to see more of that with the addition of jump shots

just like pool, I don't think Snooker can benefit from rule/format variations

wish they would ditch the black tie stuff also

are they even allowed to wear comfortable non dress shoes?

You are right, that defensive play is very important in snooker, but you have to keep in mind, that it is much easier compared to pool.
The big table and the pockets add an element of safety.
Also that snooker allows role up shots makes it a lot easier to put your opponent in a lot of trouble or play simple escape shots.
And last but not least, there is no ball in hand, so mistakes are not punished as hard as in pool.

It is kind of the same for position play.
Ok, if you snooker yourself, you can't jump to get back in line, but again the bigger table gives you more wiggle room for position play anyway.
For the modern shot makers it is not that big of a problem if they miss the position by a few centimeters, they will still make the next shot as long they can see the potting angel.
If you overrun a position in pool, there is a bigger chance to snooker yourself, because of the smaller table.
Another important factor is that the colors have fixed spots, so as soon as a player gets in, every break is more or less the same. That is the reason why we see more and more century breaks, because todays topplayers have nearly reached perfection in this standardized form of the game.

That said, it is amazing how close to perfection the top players are and how they make it look so easy.

Yes, with more balls and a bigger table, the defense if easier to execute and the replies can be easier, too. Defensive sequences are, consequently, a war of attrition, but due to the fact that defense is played in virtually every rack, the game has a greater offense/defense balance than pool, which makes it more entertaining.

That said, in snooker, watching a player thinning a ball that is eleven feet away while sending the cue ball on a multi-rail path right back to the top rail requires cueing accuracy that's almost unfathomable to us mortals.

my prediction goes like this-

o’sullivan’s last match before he retires
will see him defeat trump to get his eighth
world title (next year, after he wins
it all this year) in the decider at the crucible
with a 147.
