2023 World Snooker Championship / April 15th - May 1st

I wonder if O'Sullivan has ever before lost 7 frames in a row, especially in the World Championship. In those 7 frames, the point totals were 519-86, with Ronnie under 20 points in each of the last 6 frames.

He lost 9 in a row to Graeme Dott in 2006 WC

8 in a row to Higgins in 1998 WC

9 in a row to John Parrot in 1994 WC

What do you guys think of this small field and selection process applied to pool? I think I like it in that it makes every event important, in order to be top 16 ranking. And, it makes the WC truly the best of the best, without any filler players. And it makes the WC easy to follow. Just 32 total players, with a simple knockout bracket.

I guess what might not translate well is snooker has an established tour that all the pro players are able to compete in regularly. In pool, we have top Filipinos, for example, that would be excluded simply because they can't travel as easily.
If the primary source of income is sponsorship due to viewers, a tournament doesn't need more than 16 players. Matchroom did essentially that with their first US open at Mandalay Bay. 256 players in DE whittled down to 16 for SE. The final 15 matches were done one at a time. The first phase had very little to do with broadcast revenue and I think was streamed with minimum effort. The final 15 matches, which had full production over three days, gave them more content than they needed.

Any player outside of the top 32 is just a burden for the production. Their major use is to fill the hotel where that's a factor. And, they create interest and buzz among their friends and at their room.

As far as a world championship format, as long as there are qualifiers a limited field at the end is fine. And single elimination is fine too as long as the matches are reasonably long. For snooker, the final is a race to 18 which is something like a race to 36 at nine ball.

Loved the interview with Luca Brecel after he'd just beaten O'Sullivan.
Basically said his preparation consisted of lots of late nights getting drunk with his friends playing XBox until 6am. Very little practice.

There's hope for us all!

Well if we had the same cue action and outrageous skill as Luca - that kinda helped him as well...

What a brilliant session of snooker that was.

O' well,
caught the last little bit of the live scoring,
had that look of a ship going down nose first with its idled propellor thinking 'this isn't good'.

may of missed it,
in what little spats of video there was for non-qualified viewers, didn't see any penalties, point deducts or restaging shot stuff, is that because these are professionals?
did the orange man thing get penalized or just politely take a bow and what ever...?

that won't hold up in the long run of course. plus, the semis and finals are marathons. but i like luca's play, reminds me of chris melling

There is lots of that with professionals but not so much with Ronnie and Luca. Also, any highlight reel is unlikely to show "foul and a miss" situations.

In one of Si's matches, I think he had the balls put back four times in one snooker situation.

Si had 4 misses and surprised he didn't adjust till the 5th snooker.

All signs point to a Selby and Brecel final

Brecel and Si off to a rousing start. Fearless shot making takes them to the first interval with Si taking a 3-1 lead.
