2024 AZB Ghost Challenge - Official Thread

I played the 6 ball ghost, did not go well enough to edit the video. 2-7. Any ideas on the 6 ball ghost break for an 8 foot table.? The break was killing me. tried several locations but the balls like to keep bunching back up.
are you playing where you need a ball on the break? i just broke real soft and took ball in hand

I am just going for a decent break, No pocket required but typically will try and get something figured out to practice the break that will pocket a ball and leave a setup of some kind. Did not have time yet to review the video Rich posted or make another attempt. Thanks for the input everyone.

6 ball is super hard. I remember we used to gamble at it years back and “spot” the “naive” opponent the break. They rarely pocketed anything and then left an easy table for the “smart” player.

I find it’s actually easier to consistently pocket a ball and see the 1 in 9ball. It is a lot harder to make a ball in 6ball, which is why i decided to break em soft

had a way better day today. using a template, pattern racking, and a soft break, i won 7-6, and then kept playing. I was ahead in the score 10-9, and then didnt get back ahead, finishing it up at 13-14.

you can cherry pick two different 10-9 “victories” out of the race based on the rack track, but i included the video starting with my first out and ending at 10-9, even though the second “win” is probably prettier.

i realize this isnt a proper “race to” situation and might not “count”, but it is the best i’ve ever done against a ghost and i feel good about it. I obviously have a ton of room for improvement. I’m calling it a 10-9 win so i can feel good about myself even though i cheesed it about as much as one possibly can.View attachment 739657

Sometimes when I’m playing bad against the ghost I’ll play a modified version where I’ll play out the racks and count any 9 ball runs as a win. So if say I miss the 4 in one rack I’ll give the ghost a win and play it out. But my philosophy is I should only get ball in hand once to count as a win. If I take BIH to start I won’t take it on the next break. If I don’t I can take it after the next break and if I make it to the 4 I win. If I took BIH to start then have no shot next break, the count starts over with ball in hand. It can get frustrating racking a lot and not winning.

thats an interesting variation. when i miss, i just drop the ball by hand and play out the rest of the rack, so i still get to go through the motions of the pattern i had in mind before the miss.

sometimes when im not running out a lot or if im just bored i will play the “safety ghost”. If you play safe and get the hook you get to take ball in hand again. its a good way to incorporate safety practice since the ghost is usually just run out or dont.

I’m a decent player and I’ve known for a long time that I’ve had a bad habit. For some reason about 3 weeks ago I got the idea I was going to fix it. One of my biggest faults is as I’ve gotten older my desire has definitely not been there.

At first I was just shooting balls while trying to get rid of the habit. I decided to just throw 6 balls out where there wouldn’t be any clusters and usually a pretty simple out most of the time. Anyway at the end of a week I was getting out 6 to 8 times in a row.

Since I had made some headway on getting rid of the habit I decided to actually start playing the 9 ball ghost. Some days I just practice in no particular way but some days I would play a race to 7 against the ghost. Over the course of about a week and a half i won 5 sets in a row. Unfortunately a couple night ago my streak ended in a set I should have won easily. My break was working good and I had good layouts I just kept making stupid errors like miscueing or hooking myself. Guess I still have more room for improvement.

I haven’t been recording any sets but I’ve been putting 4 and 5 racks together pretty consistently with an accurack and bih after the break.

Awesome! Shouldn't the list be from top shooter on down? Also, how can I change my handle name, (side pocket) to my real name?
It's in order (per game) from best score to lowest score, with ties being earlier submitted is first. With the caveat if someone plays a race shorter to 7, they go at the bottom, even if they won 6-0. Did I miss one?

For your name in the list, I can change it to something else if you like. If you mean your screen name, the admin on AZ can change that.

Thanks for the explanation. There is a 7-6 match listed as 1st place in the 9-Ball challenge.

The foot steps around the table sounds like a cartoon. love it. What did you use to record the video? Cellotaped a phone to the light?

Old, used DSLR from ebay with a 10-18mm zoom lens. It's mounted between two 2'x4' flush mount to the ceiling LED panels. I can't straighten the picture, unfortunately, unless I move the whole table. I had not accounted for the camera viewfinder when I mounted the lights, and it shifted everything.
