2025 AZ Billiards Straight Pool Challenge!

Way to kill the thread super cool dude, aka

JusticeNJ

Sorry, we can't post 300 runs like John Schmidt. I don't see what the point was in the past of his posting he ran 300 and the forum died, but I am not super cool dude you. Laugh. Sorry to waste your time, but when I do get another 100 video, I will post that. Stay cool. Brian

I'm just a wanna-be 14.1 player (no one in my area plays and the closest pool room is 1hr away anyway.) After a decade of having my table shoe-horned into my basement with obstructions, my wife encouraged me to renovate the garage into a pool room. Now I have nothing stopping me from working on a high run and maybe encourage some local players to get into the game.

That's my long-winded way of saying I shot 18 on a 9' GC II with 4.5in pockets. My goal for the year is 30.

Smart to start with small goals and work up. My first goal was 50 and then 75 and then 100. Only gotten 113 once, even though I would say I play better than I did a year ago when I did it. Keep working at it. Maybe post videos and people can try and help. Brian

49 This morning...
-9fter rebuilt, 4.25" pockets
-676 fargo

Finally managed to string together a few racks. Took a 14.1 break until December last year and have struggled. Between a lack of focus and a considerably tougher table. It's been a battle

Tried some 14.1 last few days. Reference: FR426, TAP 5/5, APA 6/6.

Got to 15 once today. Made the break ball, which was set up well, but didn’t end up with any easy shots. Ugh.

Got to 14 a couple of times. One time had a nice break ball but rattled it (probably tried to juice the CB too much.) Other time I set up my key ball to get on the break ball nicely then under-hit the two-railer to get to the break ball in the right spot and I ended up on the wrong side of it. Then I had to hit it fairly hard to go into the rack off the long rail, and of course, missed the break ball. Ugh again.

Ran a few teens (10s, 11s, and a 13) and half-racks. Also ran a LOT of zeros (🙁 missed the break ball) and 1s or 2s, usually burying the CB in the rack or being a jerk and dogging what should be an easy shot. And it’s uncanny how 1/2 ball roll too short or long can give no shot in the close quarters of straight pool layouts.

But most of my higher runs happened in the second part of my session so at least I was able to bear down and focus a bit. Yesterday I got worse the longer I played. Today is progress; at least I got better as the session progressed. I also learned really quickly to ensure a tight rack (wooden rack, no template.) Loose racks suck for spreading out the balls.

Straight pool is hard. Nothing I am learning here is news to anyone reading this sub forum. 😁

69 last night. Just testing the waters here on posting again. Last time was a disaster, or maybe some people just don't want to see videos that aren't 100 + runs. Always learning in this game. I think for me, much better to use Top for break shots whenever possible. Pocket the ball more often and control it better. Experimenting with using Top, even when scratch looks possible. Usually I find, the High Action keeps me away from a scratch. Brian

I think you should post any decent run no matter the length. Plenty of people enjoy them and might learn something that helps them.

Another possibility is they may offer advice to help you improve your own game.

Glad you found out about follow on break shots. Many players never learn that it helps avoid scratches and avoids the CB going up table.
