2025 Men's World 10-Ball Championship, Sept. 20-28 -- General Comments Thread

Tyler Styer is also missing.

On the other hand, some WPA invitees include Hunter Lombardo and Lukas Fracasso-Verner from the US. And Juan Carlos Expósito and José Alberto Delgado from Spain. They are not the best those countries can offer, obviously.
Lukas Fracasso-Verner got the invite and expenses for winning that BCA US National event in Quincy in July.

Sad to see that we've yet to reach the moment where we can get the best possible fields at pool's majors. Maybe next year.

The whole shootout idea just misses the mark. The shootout itself may be interesting and even exciting to a certain extent. It's what the shootout replaces -- a potential HILL - HILL rack that's nuts. If these types of racks aren't the most exciting spectacle in all of cue sports than what is?

Yes -- a cosmo break and run for a title may only be a 6 out of 10 on the excitement meter, while a competive drill may in some world peg a 7. The problem is, an epic final rack that ends in a clearance after a prolonged safety battle is a 10. Eliminating even the possibility of an epic hill-hill battle for a championship in favor of a drill is insane to me.
Truer words were never spoken. Shootout is a joke which in my opinion does not belong in the sport.

Yes! So 7 pro men's pool events of significance, all in Asia, in the next 7 weeks. I hope they have enough energy left to make it to Florida for the International starting on Nov. 14.
I just remembered that Emily Frazer announced during the US Open a couple weeks ago that the World Pool Masters will be in early November (specific dates not announced).

And we shouldn't forget the Qatar World Cup 10-Ball, with the biggest purse in 10-Ball, on Oct. 23-Nov. 2, which overlaps the Philippines Open.

And the All Japan Championship, Nov. 17-23, which overlaps the International Open.

Thanks for the info. Seems the system isn't working. A sanctioned World Championship should not omit any of the most elite players, and Chua, FSR, and Roda are all very elite.

In fact, FSR won a WPA sanctioned world championship just two years ago. If he wasn't invited, something is very wrong. One can only wonder what the invitation criteria really are.
Imagine if the Masters champion from 2024 failed to receive an invite to the US Open in 2026. Laughable.

Doesn’t sound as bad as I thought listening to Panozzo on Doggin It. The federations had 32 picks or some such. The top 32 or so in WPA rankings got invites. Predator had 16 wildcards. They gave all former champions an auto if they wanted it. That allowed Ko Pin Yi and Eklent Kaci to get invites they otherwise probably wouldn’t.

Predator likely gave wild cards to SVB, Shaw, perhaps Yapp, but they had very few to hand out.

Residue of last year’s dispute, clearly. It seems Predator tried to get all the big names it could, but the WPA, the federations and Predator also had to reward the players who abided by their rules.

FSR was likely the main source of Panazzo for much of his info, reading between the lines. Sounds like he was invited to the qualifiers, but turned it down. He hasn’t played a lot of WPA events the past year. Players will have to play more in WPA events to get invited in the future.

Well within reason for Predator-WPA to expect that. Just like players have to attend lots of WNT events to get spots for invitationals such as Reyes, Mosconi, PLP, WPM, etc.

Panozzo threw out a lot of interesting stuff on Doggin It.

*Insists Shane Van Boening won’t get an invite for Team World at the Reyes Cup because he is not playing in Hanoi.
*Thinks SVB might not even get a Mosconi slot if he doesn’t play at the Philippines Open.
*Thinks Team World will be Gorst and four Europeans.
*Thinks Filler is unlikely to be on Team World and might not even make it on the Mosconi.

I suggested in another post that SVB skipping Hanoi was a way of telling MR/WNT that he is own man.

I am not sure he is upset with MR/WNT, but my guess is he thought they were partly to blame for the WPA dispute. SVB also has indicated he is done with bans and boycotts. So he’s gone from being very anti-WPA and pro-Matchroom to quite neutral.

By skipping Hanoi, SVB is forcing WNT to make a choice. Do they deny him a spot on Team World? Supposedly, WNT bylaws stipulate some level of participation in its events to be selected for Mosconi/Reyes. But his absence would be a glaring omission.

Now it’s possible SVB doesn’t really be on Team World. But who knows. In any case, if MR did pick SVB for Team World, it would be hard to argue Filler should be left off because of non-participation in Hanoi.

Maybe SVB is doing this on purpose to set a precedent for players. Time will tell.

Panozzo also hinted there is unhappiness among players about MR’s selection process for Reyes, and to a lesser extent, Mosconi.

The events are being used in part to pressure top players to play in WNT events when they conflict with WPA events, he suggested. The cutoff is very late – after Hanoi for Reyes selection and after the Philippines Open for Mosconi selection.

The selection for the Reyes in particular is seen quite arbitrary, with there being three wild cards among the five picks.

I don’t think it will matter with Team Asia. Yapp and Biado are the automatic picks. I think MR will add Chua, Ko Pin Yi and Duong and use the same team as last year.

These five are the Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7 ranked WNT players among Asians. Only Ko Ping Ching is better than Duong among other contenders, though a case could be made for Oi.

Team World is certain to include Gorst, but the top European player is still up for grabs. FSR has a narrow lead, and Filler is No. 2.

It is unlikely to be Filler since he is skipping Hanoi and likely the Peri. Only Kledio Kaci seems to have a chance to overtake Francisco Sanchez Ruiz in the rankings.

Then there’s the three wild cards. Could Filler get a wild card? It is in MR’s interest, but what are the WNT rules for eligibility? Can he make the team by promising to play in the Philippines Open?

It would be best for WNT and Filler if they kissed and made up. We’ll see.

Shaw is close to as certain as a wild card pick could be, for the obvious reasons.

So Gorst, FSR, Shaw … and who.

Eklent Kaci would seem to be a candidate given his controversial statements about Pinoy players, but I think he would have to win either Peri or Hanoi to overtake his brother. Would be very unfair to pick him over Kledio based on each’s performance this year.

The final pick? If not Filler, who knows. Krause, Neuhausen and Souto should be the top candidates given their performance this year.

The Mosconi is more settled, but is it? That will depend on how MR/WNT treats Shane for opting out of Hanoi.

Right now, Gorst is a locK. SVB is highly unlikely to be overtaken.

The third auto bid is a close race among Styer, Fracasso-Verner and Skyler. Dominguez and Thorpe aren’t very far behind. Oscar doesn’t plan to play Peri/Hanoi, though.

Though he doesn’t deserve it, Sky is most likely to be captain again.

So Gorst, SVB, Sky, Styer and ???

What if no SVB, then it gets very interesting. I’d guess Thorpe and Dominguez, but how can SVB be omitted if he and Oscar both don’t play Hanoi?

Welcome, Fracasso-Verner!

If as jbart said in another post, if the players could enter a qualifying I am OK with it. It’s another sport etc… but no player in any sport, particularly if they are from an R&A country can ever complain about qualifying after Hogan had to qualify for the Open at Carnoustie in 1953. 😉. Traveled by ship too.

Finally Team Europe for the Mosconi. Filler sits at No. 1 with $88,450, but he is not playing Peri/Hanoi. We don’t know if he will be in Manilla for the Philippines Open.

Next in line are:

2)Kledio Kaci - $77,450. 3)FSR - $61,350 4) Neils Feijin - $54,330 5) Jonas Souto - $53,900.

Others not far behind include Neuhausen, Labutis, Krause and Shaw.

If any of these players were to win Peri/Hanoi/Philippines, they would become locks.

Based on the calendar, Kledio seems to be a virtual lock. The other two auto spots are up for grabs.

One wild card is almost certain to be Shaw. He is unlikely to win on points alone.

The final wild card is, well, a wild card.
