3/8-10 with an insert?

I'm told there are cues with a 3/8-10 pin that have a threaded insert in the shaft. I've never seen one. Do these exist?

Yes.
Brass, phenolic and sythetics have been used.
I've even used bocote.

There are some WileeCues around with 3/8 X 10 joint pins and phonolic inserts in the shaft.
I did not think they made much difference in hit, feel, or durability over CA treated maple.

Do you mean insert as in material cored into maple and then flat face threaded or piloted like typical 5/16x14 pin?

Either way, I have seen both and own cues with both scenarios above.

I had no idea people use wooden inserts. I was talking about brass. Thanks for all the responses.

McD. used a brass insert on a 3/8 x10 pin for a brief period. I'd think that if it were a total success that they'd still be using it. Apparently not. Instinctively, I thought it was a bad idea when I first saw it.
I've been using a linen phenolic partial insert in all of my 10 thrd. shafts for the last 10 yrs or so. I admit that I first saw it in an import cue about that time. I played around with the concept for a while then decided to use it exclusively & have been using it ever since. I honestly believe that it enhances the hit of the cue & greatly extends the life of the threads. One common response from players that experience it is that when assembling the cue, the last turn of the shaft as it mates to the handle, has a much more solid, secure feel.

That was part of their version for the uni-loc.
1-3/8X10 quick release and
1=3/8X16 quick release.

I saw an import sneaky once with a brass 3/8-10 insert. The only brass one I've ever seen. Seemed very unnecessary....hit like azz.

McD still uses a brass insert on their sneaky pete, I think Jack Madden uses an insert on some of his cues. I know he's made at least one with the joint collar and the insert are one piece of material (linen?). Pretty sporty machining there.

Wouldn't this make a good alternative to people like myself who like the hit of the piloted 5/16x14?
It would seem to be close to the same characteristics.
Or am I missing something?

Thanks,
Koop

With SS collar?
I've never seen SS collar and piloted brass with the big pin.
I think brass insert on 3/8 pin is silly. The whole reason the brass insert is necessary on 5/16 pin is because the wood threads won't last in them.

Yes, I should have mentioned the SS collar.
I like the hit and feel of this so I was wondering if it would be possible to do it with the bigger pin. However, I see why it wouldn't be necessary in that, if I like that hit, why not just use the 5/16x14. Just thought I would pose the question.

It'll change the feel for sure.
With the insert for 5/16, you still have some wood around the collars and could keep some wood around the insert ala Scruggs or old Schon.
I think the pin being smaller and with that ss collar, somehow creates a combination of reasonance/bend that a lot of people like.

Makes sense.
I'm also wondering, because the pin is bigger and then add the insert, if it would leave too little wood around it?
