I've played exclusively with a Schon since I got it about a year ago, not long after I retired and started playing again. I hit some balls with a Coker about a week ago, standard Coker with phenolic sleeve, wood/wood 3/8 x 10. It was different from the Schon, and I like the Schon, but I liked the way the Coker hit.

What other cuemakers make a solid hitting 3/8 x 10 jointed cue for a reasonable price (Southwest is out of my price range).

Thanks

i don't think SW usesa 3/8 10.

anyway, as long as you are particular about your shaftwood, there's a ton of cuemakers out there. any cuemaker can turn a bad cue if you don't know what you want.

Gilberts...................

The first cuemaker that pops into my mind that uses 3/8x 10 is Andy Gilbert. Gilberts are a great cue and fairly priced at this time. I have owned several of Andys cues and have been impressed with all of them. Cokers make a good playing cue but sometimes thier work gets a lil too sloppy for my money.

In terms of a production cue the first that comes to mind is the McDermott. When you are talking about custom cues there are a plethora of cue makers that use a "big pin" with a "wood to wood" flat faced joint. By the way Southwest actually uses a 3/8x11 pin. The 3/8x11 is my favorite pin and I use a BCM cue (Bryan Mordt). He makes a great cue and has very reasonable prices.

I would suggest that when you are looking for a cue with a hit like the Coker, look for one with one of the following pins: 3/8x10, 3/8x11 or radial. They will provide a hit like the one you are looking for.

Merry Chritmas!

McDermott

I been using the McDermott 3/8 x 10 wood to wood for several years and you can get those for under $200

So if you like the way that hits, you will probably like the way the McDermott hits. I also put a sniper tip and it feels even better than the standard triangle tip.

So just something to think about.

I'm going to warn you that a Coker may not hit the same as other cues that have a 3/8ths-10 or other big pin into wood. If a Coker is built to feel like a South West, then I agree that a McDermott is going to be something closer to what you want. Or... a Coker (imagine that).

Other cuemakers like Gilbert, IMO, don't make a cue that hits like a South West. It's not all about the pin and joint.

Actually I've never hit with a southwest, I can't afford one anyway. I just happened to hit with a Coker a week ago and liked it. I had a McDermott but the butt was larger diameter than I like, and it has a ss joint. For an ss joint I prefer my Schon to others I've played with.

Cokers seem reasonably priced for the workmanship, but i've noticed that some of the Cokers posted for sale don't generate a lot of interest for some reason.

I have a Coker and it has a fantastic hit...Everyone that has said, "let me hit with your Coker", loves it....One friend of mine went right out and got a Coker after using mine, and he loves his....It is also a beautiful piece of Cocobolo wood.
If you like the Coker hit, then why are you looking for another cue with the same pin???? Jerry Olivier also makes a great cue with a 3/8 x 10 pin that is reasonablly priced...
Just my opinion though.....

I guess because I haven't played with cues like that and just because I like the Coker exclude other cues of the same genre from being better.

Jeff Olney Cues, currently the most insane bargain for one of the best cues made PERIOD

Cousins...excellent workmanship, very solid crisp hit in my experience. Not to pricey either. All joint types will privide a nice hit if the cue is made well. Good luck

Look for cues with a flat-faced joint config, with phenolic collars. The actual pitch/thread of the pin is pretty meaningless, imo...3/8-10, 3/8-11. 3/8-14, radial, etc.

But collar material, even joint configuration (piloted, flat-faced) contributes less than you might think to a cue's feel.

One last thing. If you try a Mike Webb cue, I'm 96.3% sure you'll buy it (if you have the funds). And you'll look back at this post and laugh.

People are down on them, apparently, because too many of them are being produced? Mine is from 6/03 and I got it later that year, which I think is before there was talk of "mass" production. Perhaps you'd be better off with a cue from a few years back, but I couldn't say, not having hit with any new ones.

I also like the hit and have felt no desire to switch. How much? Well, I hit some with a friend's Kersenbrock not long after I got it, and, while I liked that classic, I didn't like it any BETTER. Or maybe even quite as much ... though if anyone wanted to lay one on me, I'm sure I could get used to it!

And if you don't like a fat butt, Coker's also a good choice. Good luck.

Jerry Olivier; His cues are well built solid players and the secondary pricing is very reasonable. I have two and both play virtually the same as far as the feel of the hit is concerned.
