3/8 x 10 Shaft joint problem

Well today I noticed that after letting somebody else use my cue (two pool players who I thought knew how to handle equipment good) I went to screw my shaft and it was very tight and not screwing in correctly. I managed to get it back on by keeping it very straight but it seems to not fit as well as before.

Is there anything I can do about this, or will the metal just dig into the threads again and fix itself? I hope its not irreversible.
 
Sounds like one of your Buds maybe cross threaded your shaft for you.

Here is a tip. When screwing a shaft on, and this is very important with a
pin to wood joint, start the turn by turning the pin to the left instead of the right. You will feel the threads just slip or for a better word, drop into into place. Then start to turn the butt to the right. This will help in not cross threading the joint.

You should be ok as long as you can screw the shaft on and tighten it up without it becoming loose during play.

In the worst case scenario, a repairman can plug the shaft, bore and tap it
for your pin again. All is not lost. And its not the most expensive repair job in the world either.

Something that you also might try if you find that it is hard to screw your shaft on. Do the steps that I mentioned until you feel the threads drop in. Screw the shaft on a couple of turns. Then, gently apply bit of opposite force. Your shaft and your butt, with your left and right hand, apply a bit of opposite outward and backwards pressure, while still screwing the cue together.

And lastly, try and not lend your equipment out to Bone Heads any more. Unless they are willing to pay for damages.

What brand of shaft? Yeah, you don't want to toss that one at 200.

No worries, it can be new again.
 
Yeah I just tried it again, it only goes on if I force it on, and its a ***** to get off and on and I can see the blue paint from the inside on the thread, so I'm not going to use it anymore until I get it looked at.
 
cheap repair

Coat the the threads with CA ( super glue ) then run a tap through it.
Repeat until the thread tighten up.
If you do not have a tap then do not do what I suggested.

If the shaft has been cross threaded You need to check it for cracks.
The shaft can be bored out and have a insert installed.

If it is a predator or a OB or other laminated shafts then I think I would send it to the maker or ryan at meullers.

You can ask this question in the cue makers section,
I am sure there are some guys in there that can repair this for you.

I'd send it back to McDermott but I'm not sure if this would be covered under the warranty. I don't think I shafts are technically laminated they are high quality maple with a fiber core.

I was reading about similar issues, could I get a phenolic insert inside a 3/8 x 10 joint to prevent it from occurring again?

I know how to screw the shaft in properly by the way, and I've always done so gingerly, I've watched other people do it like idiots though, that's what I get for letting people use my shit, as my college's pool room doesn't have any sticks (and one poor condition table, its pathetic, I hate this place).

Any repairman with a 3/8-10 tap will be able to re tap the shaft and it should be totally fine.
If I told you I have done this exact job a hundred times would you believe me :)

Yeah I don't plan on sending it back, but the only cue repair place is the Dart Shoppe in Glassport, used to be an easy ride from school to here, but I am carless, now I will have to drive all the way out there during summer.

And towards the insert part?
 
Or you can send a shaft dowel to Mike and either his wife or one of his pet beavers can gnaw you another shaft.

I'm still chasing Mikes sister in law but I haven't saved up enuff for a dowry yet. And Mike is keeping a tight control over her.

Post a pic of her please Mike. She is in my Spank Bank but it is fading fast.
 
You should call a local pool room. They will know someone real close to you that has a tap and tap handle. Only takes 10 minutes to fix. Nine minutes to find a tap and tap handle and one minute to run the tap in and out.:thumbup:

I can do it but I'm 3 hours away.:frown:

There is almost no way that you will shop this to me so I will post :D

If someone brought this to me, and had a tip installed, I would run my tap through for no charge.
If you came just for this job, 10-15$
 
2 things

#1 take your cue to a repair man with a lathe. he will put the shaft into thelathe, retap the threads, some super glue, then retap trhem, afgter a couple times this will solve the problem, done right there will be no problems.
#2 don't loan cues to your buddies
