3 Cues - Questions for {{YOU}}

Everyone prefers different things in a pool-cue so these questions are subjective...

I'm about to "throw-in" a mint-condition 1984 McDermott D-21.

I'm looking for a super-soft hit, a balance point that's a little further-back from most cues, overall lighter weight than the average cue (17oz) a leather wrap and a shaft between 12.25mm & 12.50mm.
Looks are way less important to me than having confidence in the cue and finding the hit and feel I'm looking for...

I'm looking at a

1 - Mike Gulyassy (I know Mike has a good reputation for his break/jump cues but I haven't heard a lot about his playing cues).

2 - Carolina Custom.

3 - Jerry Olivier

Has anyone here ever played with any of these three cues? And - what do you think?

Imo, a cue is trash if it doesnt react intuitively. From your post, i infer you seek that connection.

The cues you mention are all quality cues.

Which one is for you? Id say you gonna need to play with them to figure it out.

Yeah - I will be playing with all three tonight and was just trying to get a bit of an outside perspective or learn of something that I may-not be factoring in the decision...

No, no, and no

No, no, and no. :boring2:

I've played with a Gulyassey since 2001 and love the cue. Many others I have let hit with it and they are all impressed.

That's my testimonial and I stand by it...I'll add that the balance of the cue makes it feel about two oz. lighter than it is. I've hit with just about everything out there and this one is the best I've tried. And it won't break your bank.

I don't know where you are, but anyone in Northern VA/MD area can find me at local tournaments or Action Pool Tour events, and I'll let them hit a few to see what it's like.

THANK YOU. The balance-statement could be the determining factor here.

John, your getting your cape yanked. The "justin" being referred to is "JustinB386", if you read some of his "work" you'll understand.

The makers you listed are good, skilled guys that have good reps, however, the materials used and construction method will affect a cues hit much more than the brand.

For example: EBONY, being very dense will subdue a hit much more than maple/purplehearth, etc. An IVORY joint will also soften "hit" as will IVORY ferrules, however, an IVORY ferrule will increase deflection due to end mass weight. i've been out of the cue game for some time and i'm sure there are lower cost alternatives to IVORY, i just don't know what they are. In addition to the wood you choose, joint, ferrule, etc., the tip plays a very significant role in "hit" and is the lowest cost and my first option in tuning "hit".

LAMBROS cues, featuring his "ultra" joint, have a soft hit with the type feedback i enjoy, they are a little pricey

SEARING cues also have a soft, quiet hit, however, they are scarce and very pricey

I'd research cue makers, pick one and discuss specs, playability, etc.

Thanks.

I think I'll know a lot more tonight as I have the rare opportunity of hitting balls with each cue.

I can tell, from the first hit, if I love it or hate it... I'm just not the most patient person in the world... and was curious about the experiences of others.

I'd give my left scrotum to PoolChump, to hit 5 balls with every cue on the market and would pay any price listed to buy the right one for me... (I'm very picky and know what I'm looking for - but that doesn't mean it's right for everyone and that's what makes this topic difficult).

Your Requirements

Gulyassey makes cues that generally have a soft hit but be aware that your perception of the hit is greatly affected by the type of tip you use. Try an elk master on a Gulyassey cue and I think you will understand. I have owned over 200 cues in my day and I've only found half a dozen that I really wanted to play with.

Good luck Pilgrim.
