In a poolroom’s weekly handicapped 9-ball tournament with 5 different handicap rankings (say 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 from strongest to weakest) how many 4 or 5 ranked players would attempt to 3-foul a 1 ranked beginner level player to try to win a game?
Personally, I would never do it, even if my opponent is on the hill. I may certainly play safeties on them in order to try to obtain ball-in-hand, and if necessary I may even foul them 3 or 4 times in a row if the layout of the balls requires it, but if I can’t figure out a way to win a game against a significantly lower skilled player without having to apply a the 3 consecutive foul loss of game rule on them, I don’t feel I deserve to win.
However, we certainly have some higher ranked players in our tournament that seem to have no problem resorting to this against a beginner level player, and I personally think it’s quite sad. Just curious as to opinions here, and I’m guessing they will be mixed?
Hasn't BCA done just that?If you don’t want newbies 3 fouled in your tournament then don’t play 3 foul rule it’s that simple.
I don't generally play anything but one pocket but as a favor to our pool room owner I played in a season of bar table events held at different rooms around the city many years ago. If if recall correctly the ratings were 6 - 10 and I was an 8, I drew a 7 who was being a bit of a jerk and called a touch foul on me when it wasn't a foul by the rules. So I three fouled him four times in a race to 7. I just couldn't help myself. If my opponent is a decent human, I would TRY to avoid 3 fouling them. If they are/were an arsehole, I'm jailing them all day long.

I am still grateful of the guy that did this to me. I had just started and didn’t know much. He is about 100 fargo higher than me now, at the time, easily 250 higher. Taught me something I’ve never forgotten. You have to pay attention, all the time. Is your opponent trying to develop a situation, where you can be three fouled? If so, what to do? There are many good options. 500 fargo or higher, you should almost never get three fouled.

Agree. Handicap tournaments with short races are better when played no 3 foul and no golden breaks (respot the nine). If you don’t want newbies 3 fouled in your tournament then don’t play 3 foul rule it’s that simple.
It took a while but I just remembered my first 3 foul. The story title would be.
The Guppie Got the Shark
I was brand new to pool tournaments in 1982. A card room in Tacoma had a $5 eight ball tournament. I had done my homework and had and studied the BCA rule book. So I was aware of the rules.
I was playing Rhinestone Ray. Sheesh I was brand new and playing a guy with a Pool Name! He broke and ran to the 8 ball and left it right in front of the bottom corner about 6or 8 inches out. I played a weak safe but got the hook. He just scoffed and handed me the cueball with a "You can't get out smirk".
So my brain starts churning and I found a way to maneuver two of my balls into close proximity at the far end. I hooked again and he smirked again as he handed me the ball. I turned to the tournament director and enquired as to the rules as I knew he was proud of his knowledge of BCA rules . Had advertised tournament that way. I then announced to my op....er uh Rhinestone Ray. "You are on two fouls and 3 is loss of game. Then I slapped on the cuffs. Oh boy was he upset. Wanted to bet $100 that he could hit it. I declined the bet. He did hit it but went in off.My first tournament victory. Won $45 and spent $70 celebrating.

For a while in the 1980s or so the BCA had both 3 fouls and BIH anywhere for a foul at eight ball. That quickly disappeared when the craziness passed. When did they have three foul rules in eight? I've never heard of that, hence the stalemate rule.

Yeah that's ok too - if both players are of a certain handicap or above the race will be of a sufficient length for the normal rules to be "fair".Not for the better players...
