3 Fouls in a Row Question

Dave, you know sometimes it's strategy to intentionally put yourself on two. But in that case you shouldn't need the other guy to remind you.

I agree - but a rule's a rule. Personally, I hate a lot of our rules because they make zero sense. This is one of them. If someone's on 2-- who cares if you tell them. If they don't know what time it is, tough noogies. But alas, I don't write the rules... there are other powers that be.

I care how they take it. I try to comport myself with sportsmanship when I play and if it is as easy as phrasing it in such as way as to not come off wrong then no problem, that's what I'll do. :)

But I don't think anyone else is under any obligation to handle it differently then I would. That's just the way I would do it.

I wasn't trying to be smart-- I was just saying if they're on two-- say "You're on two"--- it's not a hurting their feelings thing, it's a "you're on two" thing. If they're feelings get hurt or think you're sharking them, they should pick up another game. :)

Naw, I didn't think you were trying to be smart and I didn't mean for it to sound like I thought you were. It's just that we probably all say things sometimes that are taken not like we meant them. I'm not so concerned with hurting anyone's feelings as much as I just want to communicate the bad news in the most sportsmanlike or gentlemanly way possible so my intentions are not misunderstood. But I agree with you there is nothing inherently wrong in simply saying "You're on two."

I'll usually say something like "The rules require me to tell you you're on two fouls."
that's an interesting approach, I will definitely try that.
Or better, right after locking him in the jail when he is on two, I'd say "Devil made me do that" :grin-square:

I play in two 14.1 leagues and the rule in both of them is that you must tell your opponent he's on two as he steps to the table to take the shot that might be his third foul. It's not good enough to tell him he's on two right after his second foul. This is also the rule in our 14.1 tournaments. We simply say "you're on two".

Usually this happens after we've exchanged deliberate fouls but the first foul might have occurred minutes earlier and he forgot about it. It's a good rule in my opinion.

I should have known the rule. It makes sense it would be in straight pool, too. :o

Well I think that it should be told to him as he steps to the table !!!

What if you hit your opponent with a 100+ ball run, are you expecting that it will be remembered after he sits in the electric chair for about a half hour or so !!!!

And I thunk that is why it is worded the way that it is !!

Steve

players should know

Is it not every players responsibility to know whats going on at all times ?

That's what I said, Steve, sorry if I wasn't clear. We say "you're on two" as he steps to the table.

If I ever ran 100 with my opponent on two fouls, I think I would forget about the fouls, order some champagne and ask him to pour it on my head.

Rules

I'd say it's one of the rules that makes Straight Pool the gentleman's sport that it has long been considered. It isn't a memory contest, it's a game of skill. Besides, other sports have scoreboards that have information available and still players make mistakes. Love seeing a baseball player start to run off the field after the 2nd out!

I've seen an awful lot arguments in money games over one player not telling the other he was on two and the player who committed the two in a row swearing he didn't recall the first two. If the player is informed, it may stop an argument.

Correct

Yes, you are correct. I know that I have stated that I do not like telling my opponent that they are on fouls (it's like baby sitting) but I always do tell them in a nice polite way. It is the best way to avoid an argument over that situation.

Hey Ron F
Am I glad your Red Sox's left town. It was pretty painful to watch these past few days...... LOL

This is a league I'm referring to

I didnt know there were any 14.1 Leagues around here. I've been checking out 14and1.com & talking to people to see if they would be interested in getting a league started. I had a few people interested & was going to give it a go. Im in Plano, so Rusty's might be a little far. Who is your league through, how many people, how many weeks, entry fees, membership fees???? Any help you can give me would be much appreciated, Thanks Trigger, oh & Im looking forward to the next big tourney over there, I had a great time
