Weight bolts can be avoided when a good cue maker knows ahead of time.
The last cue Bob made me doesn’t use any weight bolt and the butt is cored
to accept headless bolts that come in various weights. None was necessary as
I asked for a weight of 14.5 ozs. & sans any weight bolt, the butt weighs 14.52 ozs.
Anytime you stick a hunk of metal, say 3/4 oz. or heavier, say 1 oz., in the bottom of
the cue butt, the playing weight could be dead on accurate but the balance and feel
is going to suffer. It is like an anchor but if you could take that weight and position it
within the butt spaced apart in 2-3 places, the added weight would get better distributed.
I made sure to specify on cues I ordered, except for my Schon because it was my first
custom cue order so I didn’t know better, that any weight bolt should not weigh more
than 1/4 oz. if any was needed to make the target cue weight I requested. I expected the
cue maker to be able to produce my cue without having to rely upon any heavy metal bolt.
Personally, I think it helps the cue feel lighter & better balanced when there isn’t any heavy
weight bolt in the butt the cue maker uses to satisfy the weight that the customer asked for.
If you can get a cue made without any weight bolt, I think that the cue would feel better, IMO.
