300-600 dollar cue advice

If it were my money, easy choice of Mezz EC-9 for around $550.

Would recommend an upgrade to the ex-pro shaft; well worth a few bucks.

Weight bolts can be avoided when a good cue maker knows ahead of time.
The last cue Bob made me doesn’t use any weight bolt and the butt is cored
to accept headless bolts that come in various weights. None was necessary as
I asked for a weight of 14.5 ozs. & sans any weight bolt, the butt weighs 14.52 ozs.

Anytime you stick a hunk of metal, say 3/4 oz. or heavier, say 1 oz., in the bottom of
the cue butt, the playing weight could be dead on accurate but the balance and feel
is going to suffer. It is like an anchor but if you could take that weight and position it
within the butt spaced apart in 2-3 places, the added weight would get better distributed.

I made sure to specify on cues I ordered, except for my Schon because it was my first
custom cue order so I didn’t know better, that any weight bolt should not weigh more
than 1/4 oz. if any was needed to make the target cue weight I requested. I expected the
cue maker to be able to produce my cue without having to rely upon any heavy metal bolt.

Personally, I think it helps the cue feel lighter & better balanced when there isn’t any heavy
weight bolt in the butt the cue maker uses to satisfy the weight that the customer asked for.
If you can get a cue made without any weight bolt, I think that the cue would feel better, IMO.

A (used) Mezz offers the best value in that range IMO. Mezz butts are very consistent from one model to another and you have access to a wide ecosystem of shafts, extensions etc.

I tried a Joss once and it was pretty horrible, and Schon are past their better days. Both brands are relatively niche, much smaller ecosystem and don't hold their value as well. The second hand market for Mezz is blooming, I made 500 profit on my last one.

There is a nice Joss here with an extra Tiger LD shaft for 450. Seems like a good value. I like Joss cues. Good luck on this cue journey!

That's what I thought. I weighed it myself, it was 19.3 but feels heavier than my girls cue which is 19oz. It does have a bolt, it was all the way in the butt so I backed it out all the way to try and change the balance point more to the rear so it would be closer to where my hand grip is. How does the stiffness relate to shaft diameter? Bigger diameter, stiffer hit? I'm in LA so i would assume there's quite a bit of members around me. The best hitting cue I've tried so far was a Joss butt with an OB shaft from a buddy of mine. Perfectly balanced and stiff hit.

Well there you go, get the same OB shaft and Joss cues are not that expensive. Although OB has stopped making many of the older design shafts, you can still find a bunch used.

For an outside of the box suggestion, what about the How Cues ZR" series from Japan? $450 and they look to be of a high quality like Mezz but no personal experience. I have been considering one for my next budget player.

I'm in the market for a new cue, around 300 to 600 dollar budget. So far I've narrowed it down to Pechauer and Joss, but am open to other possibilities. If you play with or have experience with either of those brands what are some positives or negatives you feel about them? Thanks in advance for any help. -Beto-
Go Viking!
Fantastic hit and a superb balance. 12,75mm Vikore shaft with Tiger Everest/Sniper playes great!
Got the 18,5oz B5021 with 12,75mm Vikore with Tiger Sniper myself. Siege and InViktus 12,75mm with Tiger Sniper on the way also.
My Mezz are now for sale...

Replacing a Mezz with a Viking?
Thats a new one.
According to some Mezz cues are made by the pool gods.
I have no experience with either brand.

Zac cues.com , custom made $600 when you convert cdn$ to us. Great hit.

I had pechauer custom build me this cue several months ago. They are well known for quality. Now, im having OB cues custom build me another cue right now. OB is under new management and they were extremely friendly and helpful on the phone. I need to stop buying cues.

It's all a matter of taste, but having played Joss and Pechauer, it's absolutely Pechauer. I own both their JP and Pro series cues, and quality, playability, customer service are all the very best. The grow their own trees, process them in their own sawmill and kilns, build all their own screws and joints in their own machine shop, outsource virtually nothing. Not many do that. Great people to work with.

Jupp! Sold my Predator P3 with 12,9mm Revo and ZAN Premium Hybrid Max tip. Bought Mezz MSP2-K with two EX Pro shafts, bad choice. Bought Predator Vantage and 314-3 with ZAN PLUS Medium tips and it was a big upgrade to the EX Pro. The Vantage is superior to EX Pro in every way IMO. Wanted a wrapped and thicker butt and ordered a Viking i liked the look of. Ordered the standard Vikore shaft in 12,75mm with Tiger Everest as standard.
Was totally stunned by the way it played. The balance and hit was just superb! Never played the Mezz anymore!
Ordered the InViktus and Siege shaft in 12,75mm and with Tiger Sniper tips right away. The Vantage is a good match with the Viking butt, but prefer the Vikore with Tiger Sniper tip.
Really looking forward getting my Siege and InViktus.
For me the Viking is superior to Mezz in pure playability.
