I agree! Why would you invest so much in a pool room and put in some un-proven generic tables? G-Cues has Gold Crowns with champioship cloth. If anything should be changed, I would like to see tighter pockets. Otherwise G-cues is a great place to have the open! It's centrally located & easy to fly in and out of. Gary has always been a great supporter of pool in Texas, including hosting numerous league events and a monthly event that you can win entry to the Texas Open. Hats off to Gary and G-cues!

GCues has the tables, not as much room, but mind you....the matches are at specific times and so not everyone sits there all day either. I never had a problem finding a seat at GCues during the Open....The issue there though is that Gary brings in bleacher type seats and puts two sections in there, which allows plenty of seating, but walking around can get just a little cramped.
The Billiard Den is also nice and I wouldn't have a problem with the Open being closer to where I'm at, but the tables aren't the quality for high tournament play I don't think. They are custom made. They have Texas State Quarters for the rail markers and they play well....but I'm not sure that the beds are slate. When I played on them, they were alright, but I found them too easy....maybe I was just having a good day. I really like the amount of room in the place and the fact that they have good food.

I am a pool player....
This is Kevin Welling from G Cue Billiards. I don't know what you are basing this statement from, but I AM a pool player.
I don't know what any other pool room owners do out there to support the game but I know we do way more than our share every year. Just in the past year we have sponsored a couple of women in Hunter Tour events, sponsored BCA teams that have gone to Vegas, have weekly and monthly 9-ball events, sponsor a local woman pro every month, and spend over $10,000 and 100's of hours every year to put on the Texas Open.
As far as our place being "run down", I'd like to see where you play pool every day. In the last year, we've had new carpet installed in the bar and on the main floor, had stained concrete installed in walkway areas, painted most of the room, had a table mechanic work on the table a few times, and installed a 50" plasma screen TV.
Let's leave the personal comments out (including other owners like the Billiard's Den 12 step comment) I don't mind when someone says they don't like playing on our tables. I admit they are hard to master. They are extremely fast so a mistake that puts you out of line by an inch or two on average tables becomes out of line by a foot or two at G Cue. The top players that come in for the Open every year always compliment me on how great the equipment is for a public room that is being played on by your "smack 'em around" beer drinkers. That is compliment enough for me.
If you had a bad experience at G Cue before, come by and let me buy you a drink. I assure you I don't mind pool players. You might even convince me to play a set or two.

I usually have the up most respect for pool rooms owners, but I'm sorry I just had to say it. The guy wanted me to run weekely tournaments there and I couldn't do it..because of the reasons stated above..It's a nice place with plenty of room, but there were just to many things that steered me away from that place..We'll just leave it at that and drop the subject..It would be nice if every room owner was like yourself Kevin, and I look forward to meeting you...

We (the Hunter Tour) are about to host an event there Sept 8-9 and so will the Viking Tour Sept 15-16. I would hate to have players go into the Billiard Den with the impression you have openly stated [when it's tough enough already to find pool rooms who want to host tours].
As a side note, we have held the Hunter Tour at G Cue Billiards several times. No complaints from our players about them.

Give it a rest and don't put something out here (publicly) that may come back to bite you in the "you know what"! Bad taste in my opinion.
On a side note: I am eager to play at G Cue Billiards. They have a nice room with nice tables and I can't wait to play in the tournament. Pro's or no Pro's.... bring it on!! =) hehe...

Billiard Den has 8-ball and 9-ball weekly tournaments that are run very successfully and usually have attendance from 15-25 people every time they have tournaments. I have played in them and also helped run them and no problems whatsoever. The Hunter Tour will be having their stop at The Billiard Den on September 8 and 9 plus the Viking Tour is hosted out of there and will be having their tournament the subsequent weekend, September 15 and 16. With these reputable tournament organizations, the Billiard Den stands on its own for actively contributing to the sport of pool and pool players as well. As long as pool room owners like the Billiard Den, G Cues, Fast Eddie's, etc. will continue to promote this sport for pool players, then it is up to every individual pool player to make their choice where they play.
The Hunter Tour was hosted by G Cues as well on a previous occasion and it was an excellent event with gracious hospitality and utmost hosting by Kevin and his team.

Gary and Kevin Welling should be applauded for their efforts and generosity in keeping the tradition of the Texas Open alive. If you think they are doing this for profit, you are sorely mistaken. Facilitating such an event takes lots of planning, money, and endless hours of prearation. They should be comended for their efforts and hard work.
My suggestion to you is rethink your position before meeting Gary and Kevin head on. They are sharp men, but they will stand their ground.
