But I will stand up and say there is definitely a perceptible difference in the level of refinement between JB's artisans' work and Jim's work. No comparison. Jim is hands down the Picasso on the leather canvas in my book.
There is no doubt that the work Jim does is fantastic. And, as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I am not sure how our cases got into this comparison but since you are standing up to compare them can you elaborate a bit on what you mean by "refinement"?
Also, Picasso on the leather canvas is a bit lofty don't you think? Not saying my people are better than Jim and his people but there are people who are are DEFINITELY better than anything that I have seen from either Jim, John Barton, Jack Justis and well, just about any other cue case maker to date. These people do art in leather that goes well beyond the comparatively simple decoration we do. IF anyone deserves to be called the Picasso of the leather canvas then it is these folks. Bruce Clay, Silva Fox, Jeremiah Watt, Chas Clements to name just a
very few.
I have however submitted pictures of our work for peer review to many leather artists for critique because I am not only interested in dong nice cue cases but I am interested in helping our toolers to increase their knowledge and skill. All of the feedback we received has been positive with praise for nice work and tips to improve the work even further.
So while I can surely see the contrast in the work that is on Jim's cases and the work that is on ours, I respectfully disagree that the difference is one of refinement and more one of style. Jim's work has his particular flavor as does ours. Actually we have a few flavors as we have several different people doing the work and each has their own style.
Now, the case up for sale is gorgeous. The price is right and it should go quickly. Jim's decorative work is wonderful in my opinion and the unique designs like this are one of the things that makes him a great addition to the billiard world.
I am pretty sure that there is room in everyone's collection for a few Murnak's and a few JB Cases for all those who love fine work.
