Your opponent has 3 balls left and is an A player. 9ft.Diamond Pro Am with Pro-Cut pockets and Simonis 860. Any suggestions on winning this game?

Uhhhhhhhhh.....................................make the 8 ball?

No really, if you can't cut that ball, you shouldn't be playing on such good equipment. You should leave that to PLAYERS.

*Edited for change in cue table

*Even after the change, I still think that a safety isn't an option, and the bank is closed because of the 15. Still have to cut it in, but leave the cue ball on head rail if you can (in case you miss)

Bigtruck, looks like an easy cut in the corner....cue should just run north and south, just gotta avoid hitting the 15 with too much pace....

Looks pretty easy, maybe I missed the question

To your point, his runout is pretty easy...pocket speed should leave the cue on or close to the headrail, leaving a long shot, if you happen to miss...

i'd fire at that 8 and try to cut it in the corner. just focus on making it not even a hint of shafty in my mind there

Looks easier on Cuetable

Yeah it looks a little easier on the cuetable. I made it a little tougher now. It was in a spot that made me want to look for a safe.

Check it out again.

Thanks,

I don't shoot this 8-ball at pocket speed. I shoot it at cue-stuck-to-the-head-rail speed. If I miss, he's gonna shoot off the rail. Maybe I play too much 1P, but even the last shot requires cue ball shape.

Cut it in and shake the man's hand.:)

I agree with the other members. Take a run at the cutting the 8 in the corner. There really isnt a good safe opportunity on the table where the other player wont be able to stick you even harder so go for it...

An alternative to cutting the 8 is the safe bank. Bank to the top right corner on the diagram, and try and leave the cue there as well.

If you miss, he's got a tough shot on the rail be it the cut or the combo. As well, the bank isn't *that* difficult and you can control the cue pretty well.

Something to this effect:

I would attempt to cut in this easy 8, sell out, and wonder why I'm up against an A player.

since your'e playing an A player, and aren't sure about that shot

Neil,

I like to post tough situation that I encounter to get some other perspectives. Perfect example is Steve Walden's idea, which looks like the highest percentage. If you take the cut shot, you better make it. Otherwise you just sold the farm.;)

Thanks for your thoughts,

Ray

ps. I've seen a lot of "A" player scratch trying a cut like this.

yep, the first thing I thought of was the bank. If you play it right, you either make it and win, or leave the eight very near the pocket and your opponent with an out that is far from gauranteed. Keep in mind, the eight will hopefully be blocking the pocket, so if he opts to shoot that fifteen first, he will have a bit of a time getting to the 13. Regardless, there is more than one pitfall your opponent can fall into while trying to get out. Especially with the knowledge that any mistake will cost him the game with my ball hanging in the corner.

If I leave hime in that position, and he gets out, I will not feel bad one bit. At least he earned the win, instead of me missing that cut and handing it to him!

i love these theads where we discuss stragity on a shot, in this case Mr. Walden is correct, its a simple 2-way shot if you make it great, if not the rock and 8 are at the other end of the box leaving the opponet a tougher out, its a bad situation, but thats the best solution. if you miss it there is a slight chance of leaving the rock behind the 8 which would be second best to winning.

Waldon on the shot i saw as well.

For me its not a high percentage ball by any stretch of the imagination, but I back hand bank reasonably well.I'd shoot it to go.

Holding cue behind the 11 would be a much tougher challange then pocketing the ball for me fwiw. Not a bad target mind you,but my last thought word be to shoot what felt right to play the ball.

Based on Bigtruck's description of the table condition (9ft.Diamond Pro Am with Pro-Cut pockets and Simonis 860), my first idea is to over-cut the 8 at "just drop" speed. The built in calculator shows this is a 72 degrees cut. I would be happy if I can freeze the CB to the end rail.

However, as the layout shows, it is very possible for my opponent to do the layout on page 2 of the link below and I will be forced to make a kick shot...

I dont see why you can't just cut the ball in? It is not a scratch shot as far as I can see.

I think in a game of 8 ball, it is not a good situation to try to play safe on your 8 ball, with many balls of your opponent left on the table, and it is worst of you can still let your opponent see all of his balls after your safety.

May be the diagram looks easier than it seems, but I think the cut is the shot. A 72 degree cut is a fine cut but is a shot an A player is able to make, in my opinion.

Cut the eight in at pocket speed. Make it and you win, hang it and on tough equipment you've still got a chance. If you do neither, odds are you're through. If you hang it, opponent may either fail to get out or leave you a relistic chance to kick in the eight.

Make sure to protect against moving opponent's balls that are on the long rail.
